This lesson is Lesson 2 of the starter unit Welcome to junior high. Its learning objectives require students to talk about different places at school, discuss activities they can do in these areas, and describe their new school with the simple present tense. It builds on the previous lesson and helps freshmen get familiar with campus‑themed vocabulary and basic sentence patterns for daily description.
The class starts with the Watch and Say activity. Students watch a video about the school and identify school‑location words, such as classroom, gym, playground and canteen. More school places are then presented with pictures, including the teaching building, science lab, computer lab, art room, music room, dance hall and library. Students learn the corresponding English names for these facilities and think about what people usually do in each spot. This vocabulary input lays a foundation for the following reading and oral practice.
Next, students read an introductory text about a new school. The material introduces three main buildings and a playground. Volunteers show visitors around the campus. The teaching building has three floors where all classrooms lie. Building 2 contains science and computer labs on the first floor, music rooms, art rooms and a dance hall on the second floor, as well as a library on the third floor. On the playground, students can do morning exercises, hold sports meetings, run and play football. The dining hall is not huge yet serves tasty food. After reading, students finish multiple exercises: matching locations, answering detailed questions, ticking permitted activities, and judging true‑or‑false statements to check reading comprehension.
Grammar practice focuses on three coordinating conjunctions: and, or and but. “And” adds related ideas or information; “or” presents choices; “but” shows contrast. Students complete sentence‑matching tasks and search for example sentences in the passage to understand their practical usage. Through real‑text examples, they master how to connect words, phrases and short sentences properly.
Another core grammar point is three basic simple‑sentence structures. The first pattern is Subject‑Linking Verb‑Predicative, using be verbs am, is, are to introduce features of people or things, for instance “This is our new school”. The second one is Subject‑Intransitive Verb. Intransitive verbs such as come and begin can stand alone without objects, like “The teachers come”. The third structure is Subject‑Transitive Verb‑Object. Transitive verbs need objects to complete meaning, for example “I love my new school”. The lesson also distinguishes transitive verbs from intransitive verbs and lists typical examples of each group.
In the output segment, students are guided to organize their own school description. Writing hints are offered in three parts: beginning, body and ending. In the beginning, students introduce their new school directly. For the body part, they name school places, list available activities and share personal feelings about these locations, using conjunctions and learned sentence patterns. In the ending, they express love or preference for certain school areas. Sample sentences and a model paragraph are provided for reference. Students carry out pair‑work oral practice to talk about their real‑life campus.
To sum up, this lesson combines vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar and spoken output around the theme of knowing the school. Students accumulate campus‑related nouns, grasp the usage of and, or, but, and recognize three fundamental simple‑sentence structures of English. They are able to describe school buildings, activities and personal feelings in simple present tense. Apart from language knowledge, the lesson helps new‑junior‑high students adapt to their new campus environment, forming positive feelings towards their new school life.
