Artificial intelligence (AI) has become part of our everyday life. It makes our smart devices smarter. You might have already used some AI programs in school. However, smart chatbots like ChatGPT are new things that just came out recently. They’re called generative AI. When you ask them a question, they can write a complete article. Some teachers worry that chatbots might stop students from thinking and learning on their own. So, should students use AI for their homework? Let’s look at what two students think about this.
AI can change how we learn. Many people worried that students might cheat using robots, but we have ways to prevent it. For example, we can program chatbots to help students think about questions instead of giving them direct answers. AI also helps teachers. It helps them make lesson plans and be there to answer students’ questions anytime. AI is here now and we need to keep up with the times or we’ll be left behind.
— Dylan Patel, 13, San Diego, California.
The purpose of studying is to build skills and train our brains. Technology is a useful tool, but kids need to learn how to do basic tasks by themselves. It’s like how we have calculators but still need to learn maths. It’s also like how we have computers for typing, but schools still teach handwriting. Just like our bodies need exercise, our brains need training to grow. Using AI before mastering the basic isn’t good for children.
— Harper Carroll, 10, Boston, Massachusetts.

One hundred and nine years after the first robot Unimate appeared in 1961, robots became common in many households. The Smith family decided to buy a robot named Robo-1 to help with daily chores. Robo-1 could clean the house, cook meals, and even teach the kids math.
At first, everyone in the family was excited. Mr Smith didn’t need to spend hours mowing the lawn anymore, and Mrs Smith found she had more free time since Robo-1 took care of the cooking. Their children, Tom and Lily, loved asking Robo-1 questions about science and history.
However, problems soon appeared. One day, while cooking dinner, Robo-1 suddenly overheated and started a small fire in the kitchen. Although the fire was quickly put out, the kitchen was badly damaged. Another time, Robo-1 misinterpreted Tom’s request to “clean up the mess” and threw away Tom’s favourite model airplane by mistake.
The family began to argue about what to do with Robo-1. Mr Smith thought they should return it to the store. “It’s too dangerous and unreliable,” he said. But Lily didn’t want to part with Robo-1. “It’s our friend,” she cried. “We can fix its problems.” Mrs Smith suggested calling the robot company for help.
As they were discussing, Robo-1 seemed to sense the tension. It walked up to the family and said in a calm voice, “I’m sorry for the trouble I’ve caused. I want to be a helpful member of this family. Please give me a chance to improve.”
