Reading comprehension (共30分) A. Choose the best answer (6分) Newspapers and television news programs always seem to report about the bad things happening in society. However, there is a place where readers can find some good news. That place is a website called Happy News. Happy News was created by Byron Reese, who was the founder and CEO of Page Wise. Reese once said about Happy News, “Since the news media is giving people an unbalanced (偏颇的) view of the world, it’s our duty to make a difference. Traditional media often focuses on negative (消极的) stories, but our personal experience is usually different from that. Generally, most people are good and try to help each other. Most people are honest.” Not everyone agrees with Reese’s view, though. Many people think that news sources have a responsibility to provide news that is helpful to people. People need to know about issues or problems in today’s society. Then people are better able to make decisions about the things that influence their daily lives. According to this, Reese said, “Happy News is not trying to stop people from learning about issues or problems. Instead, it is just trying to provide a balanced picture of today’s world.” By the end of its first month online, Happy News had more than 70,000 readers. About 60 percent of them were women. Something else unique makes Happy News different from any of the other news or information websites that are on the Internet. Unlike many other websites, Happy News gets fan mail from its readers on a daily basis. A reader said in one of them, “From Happy News, I’ve realized that the world is not as bad of a place as I have been trained to believe.” In the world of Happy News, there is no bad or ugly, only good. 31. While having a space meal, what do astronauts have for a drink? They have a lot of ____42____, such as coffee, tea, orange juice and lemonade. Space food sounds delicious, doesn’t it? But you have to be careful, or it will float away! 37. A. right B. best C. first D. same 38. A. way B. ability C. form D. environment 39. A. one B. two C. three D. four 40. A. instead of B. even C. as well as D. except 41. A. dirty B. fresh C. heavy D. comfortable 42. A. parts B. services C. choices D. answers 【答案】37. D 38. C 39. C 40. B 41. A 42. 空后指出“just like people on the Earth”,按照常理地球上的人一日吃三餐,且后句“The meals”用复数指代,应选用three表示“三”。 instead of“代替”,as well as“也,还”,except“除…… C. Read the passage and answer the questions (12分) Read the passage and answer the questions: Eating Noodles Aloud! Japan is a nation that values good manners and the qualities of being quiet. Yet, when it comes to eating noodles, Japanese people can be the loudest in the world. According to lifestyle website Grapee.jp, slurping (发出啧啧声) when eating noodles is encouraged in Japanese culture. It’s believed that taking air into your mouth can help the noodles cool down and taste better. It’s also considered to be a way to show one’s enjoyment of the dish. Sometimes, just making the noise alone seems to make the noodles more enjoyable. It was not until a new expression—“noodle harassment (骚扰)”—came out on social media that Japanese people started to realize the problem. They found that the slurping noise was making some foreign visitors uncomfortable. As a response, Japanese instant noodle maker Nissin introduced a so-called noise-canceling fork. The fork looks like an electric toothbrush. It is connected wirelessly (无线地) to a smartphone. When the person using the fork starts to slurp, the fork will send a signal to the person’s phone. Then the phone will play a more pleasant sound over the slurping noise. But is it really necessary? Dining traditions and table manners do vary. In India, people eat with their hands. They think they build a connection with the food in this way. However, people who are used to eating with forks might find it unacceptable to get their hands covered in oil or sauce. But this eating method is part of India’s culture, just like Japan’s slurping is part of its own. “So, if you are eating noodles, please slurp,” wrote a Japanese food blogger (博主). “If anyone is unhappy with you doing that, just ignore them. They’re totally missing the point.” 49. Why do Japanese slurp when they are having noodles? ____________________________________________________________________________________ 50. When did Japanese people find that the slurping noise was making some foreign visitors uncomfortable? ____________________________________________________________________________________ 51. How can the electric fork cancel out the slurping noise? ____________________________________________________________________________________ 52. It is encouraged in Indian culture to eat with forks, isn’t it? ____________________________________________________________________________________ 53. What does the underlined phrase “missing the point” in the last sentence mean? _____________________________________________________________________________________ 54. What is your opinion on the food blogger’s advice? _____________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】49. Because they believe it can help the noodles cool down and taste better, and it is also a way to show their enjoyment of the dish. 50. It was not until a new expression “noodle harassment” came out on social media that they realized the problem. 51. When the person using the fork starts to slurp, the fork sends a signal to the phone, which then plays a more pleasant sound over the slurping noise. 52. No, it isn’t. In India, people eat with their hands, not forks. 53. It means failing to understand the true meaning or purpose. 54. I think the advice is reasonable. Dining traditions vary from culture to culture, and it’s important to respect local customs. While we should be considerate of others, we also shouldn’t completely ignore the cultural meaning behind certain behaviors. 【49题详解】 第二段指出“It’s believed that taking air into your mouth can help the noodles cool down and taste better. It’s also considered to be a way to show one’s enjoyment of the dish.”,日本人吃面出声,一是为了让面条降温、口感更好,二是表达对食物的喜爱。 【50题详解】 第三段指出“It was not until a new expression—“noodle harassment”—came out on social media that Japanese people started to realize the problem. They found that the slurping noise was making some foreign visitors uncomfortable.”,直到社交媒体上出现“面骚扰”这一说法,日本人才意识到这个问题。 【51题详解】 第四段指出“When the person using the fork starts to slurp, the fork will send a signal to the person’s phone. Then the phone will play a more pleasant sound over the slurping noise.”,当使用者发出吃面声时,叉子会向手机发送信号,手机播放更悦耳的声音掩盖吃面声。 【52题详解】 第五段指出“In India, people eat with their hands.”,印度文化中鼓励用手吃饭,而非用叉子。 VII. Part 3 Reading and Writing (第三部分读写) VI. 31. According to Reese, how is Happy News different from other news sources? A. It gives a balanced view of the world. B. It focuses on negative news stories. C. It tells Reese’s personal experience. D. It provides people with helpful news. 32. Some people don’t like Happy News probably because ________. A. Happy News doesn’t seem like traditional media B.
