Miss England, Jessica Gagen, is not your ordinary beauty winner. She just added an impressive title, a rocket scientist, to her career.
The 27-year-old just graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and she has set her sights on becoming an astronaut (宇航员).
But winning her title just a few months before completing her degree was no easy task for the energetic redhead from Kelmersdale. She is the first red-headed woman — and the first rocket scientist — to be crowned (加冕) Miss England.
Gagen was able to manage both her competition and her schoolwork but the stress of doing both left her with chest pains and sleeplessness. However, she didn’t give up, just as she had been treated badly and always been made fun of as a child for having red hair.
“It was a tough five-year journey to get to this point, and I faced challenges before I even began,” Gagen said. “I think it’s important that today’s youth know that sometimes things don’t go entirely to plan, and that’s perfectly okay.”
Before starting at the university, Gagen studied a foundation year in physics while working on weekends because she didn’t have all the courses she needed for the program. She began studying at the university in 2019 and when the pandemic (流行病) hit, all the course work went online. She did this while working full time at night.
During the course of her studies, Gagen saw that there were very few females in STEM and decided to make it her task to promote (提升) careers in STEM for women and girls on her social media.
In the first year, she won Miss Lancashire and placed second in the national contest but she really wanted to win to promote her task. “There’s a lot of work that goes into becoming Miss England, and I really wanted to win because I knew I could use the platform to get more girls into engineering,” she said.
24. What is special about Miss England mentioned in the text?
A. She is also a scientist. B. She was once an astronaut.
C. She had a happy childhood. D. She has great pressure at present.
25. Why was Gagen laughed at when she was young?
A. She had trouble with her study. B. She was in poor health.
C. The color of her hair was unusual. D. Her clothes were not beautiful.
26. What do we know about Gagen from paragraph 6?
A. Her lifestyle in high school. B. Some of her college education.
C. Her attitude to her classmates. D. The support from her family.
27. What is Gagen’s purpose in winning Miss England?
A. To continue her college education.
B. To realize her dream since childhood.
C. To get confidence to deal with difficulties.
D. To encourage more girls to learn STEM.

Do you want a better memory (记忆力)? If there were an app on your phone that could improve your memory, would you try it? After all, our memory can be easily damaged by diseases, injuries, bad mental health conditions and, most particularly for all of us, aging.
Nowadays, there are a large number of apps that provide memory training. Can they help you remember to take medicine, do better on a school exam, remember the name of the person whom you met yesterday? Some scientists question whether this is possible. Undoubtedly, many of the brain training companies today boast the benefits of using their apps.
Scientists have provided proof that brain training does not benefit everyone in the same way. It is suggested that little consideration has been given to who would benefit most from those brain training apps. Will they only be those who have some forms of memory impairment (缺陷), or those eager for self-improvement even though they are already functioning very well?
To overcome these limitations, our team has started a new study aiming to find 30,000 volunteers to help us decide which form of training may be the best for individuals. Our goal is to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead of focusing on the simple question of whether brain training works, we are considering covering the whole population in a new challenge to test for whom brain training works, and under which conditions.
28. What damages our memory the most according to paragraph 1?
A. Growing old. B. Being sick.
C. Getting injured. D. Suffering from mental problems.
29. What does the underlined word “boast” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Describe. B. Show. C. Self-praise. D. Recommend.
30. What’s the scientists’ attitude toward the memory training apps?
A. Uncaring. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Supportive.
31. Why does the author’s team do the study?
A. To see if brain training works.
B. To prove one-size-fits-all is best.
C. To explain why apps fail for some people.
D. To find the best training for different people.

Libraries around the world still keep old books hundreds of years old. But will we be able to read today’s digital (数字的) books in hundreds of years? Librarians are worried. Even now, we can’t open some files (文件) from 20 or 25 years ago. Will our digital works be lost in a digital black hole? Will we face the loss of valuable information?
Technology is changing fast. Old ways of keeping information are gone now, or they are no longer supported by new technology. For example, many people used floppy discs (软盘) to save files years ago, but today few machines can open them. Also, millions of songs and music pieces were saved on tapes or CDs, but now most old music players no longer work. Another problem is that websites often change or close down, and all the information on them can fall into the digital black hole.
Books, however, are quite easy to keep. We don’t need special tools or technology to read them. If you keep them in a dry and safe place, they will stay safe for a long time. Li Shizhen’s great medical book Ben Cao Gang Mu came out in 1593. Amazingly, three copies from the first printing still survive today. That’s not bad for a book more than 400 years old.
Today, to some researchers, printed books remain a safe way to keep information. In 2014, a professional group began to raise money to print a famous online encyclopedia into 1,000 books. This would make sure that even if digital technology fails, the knowledge can still be kept.
For now, when it comes to storing information, printed copies seem to be the safest choice. However, future technology might develop and provide new ways to solve the problem of the digital black hole. Time will tell.
32. What happens if our digital works fall into a digital black hole?
A. They are carefully kept. B. They cannot be understood.
C. They cannot be read or reached. D. They are saved in a wrong place.
33. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How music players are developing. B. How technology is changing over time.
C. Why old machines are no longer used today. D. Why technology may cause information loss.
34. Why does the writer mention Ben Cao Gang Mu?
A.To discuss why this book is still important.
B.To show printed books can last for a long time.
C.To describe the great value of the book.
D.To tell when the earliest printed book came out.
35. What would the writer most probably agree with?
A.Libraries should keep more digital books.
B.Digital books are less valuable than printed ones.
C.Technology will soon solve the problem of the digital black hole.
D.Technology is still looking for better ways to keep information.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳答案,选项中有两个为多余选项。
E-learning
Courses that are taught via the Internet, or online courses, have become popular in many countries. 36 Students watch the video online and take part in online activities. Some courses are free and open to anyone, giving students anywhere the chance to study at any time. Of course, watching students and teachers on a computer screen is not the same as taking part in a real class.
37 In Singapore, eight schools have been chosen to try new ways of using technology in the classroom. The schools have tablets and touchscreens instead of books and blackboards in the classrooms. There are also social media platforms to help the students work together on projects. 38
In the Republic of Korea, some students have been taught English by foreign teachers since 2011. The teachers stay in their own countries and connect with classrooms via the Internet. Instead of looking at a screen, the students interact with a robot in the classroom. 39 It is unlikely that robot teachers will replace real teachers, but they can be useful tools.
These examples show that e-learning works well. 40 No one knows what the future classrooms will look like, but studying now is much more enjoyable than before.
A. Online courses cost students nothing at all.
B. Students finish tasks together in online spaces.
C. Other kinds of e-learning are being tested around the world.
D. However, they differ greatly from traditional in-person classes.
E. With fast-developing technology, more learning methods will come out.
F. The robot can move around and talk with students under remote control.
G. There are various online courses, but most show a video of a teacher and students in a classroom.

【解析】【原文】W: A new museum of laughter in Croatia helps people cope with the stress of modern life. At the HaHaHouse in Zagreb, Croatia, visitors walk into a cloud of white smoke to “wash away” their worries before climbing into a “giant washing machine”, and then they move down a slide into a space filled with little white balls where the fun begins.
Forty-three-year-old Andrea Golubić is the museum’s creator. She wanted to heal people through laughter. She said a photo of herself at age seven inspired her. “I was constantly joking as a kid,” she added. The museum has eight interactive zones. One features cheerful rubber chickens singing songs like ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”. Another lets visitors wrestle in large clothes. There’s also a room on the history of humor, from ancient times to today, shown through theaters, films, and the Internet. Singer Zorica Bucic said the museum was perfect for today’s times. “Entering here is like entering childhood, being relieved of all problems,” she said. Bucic added that if people could come to the museum often, they wouldn’t need to visit a psychologist

That’s not bad for a book more than 400 years old.(然而,书的保存却相当简单。

However, future technology might develop and provide new ways to solve the problem of the digital black hole.
