B For years, Alma has been the Emergency Poet, travelling around British festivals and literary events in an old ambulance, and giving one-to-one consultations. Now she’s gone a step further with The Poetry Pharmacy, her magical shop selling all things poetry-related. Alma always wanted to be a writer, but ended up with a shadow life instead, living and working around books and literature. She worked as a bookseller, and then at a publishing house for many years. Then, one day, she was walking down the high street in Bishop’s Castle, a few miles away from her home, when she looked into a closed-up shop, saw the dusty and neglected Edwardian shelves and drawers — and fell in love. Her partner, Jim Sheard, is an academic — and of course a published poet. He is supportive of her work, but it still took a while to convince him that they should buy the building, and live above the shop. The redecoration funded with a successful campaign on Kickstarter. “It was other people’s belief in the idea that tipped the scales into doing it,” Alma says. There’s a skill to creating spaces where people feel really comfortable, and it’s one Alma seems to possess in abundance. She has a space put aside for the Emergency Poet, styled like Sigmund Freud’s consulting room, with a comfortable chair for her’patients’ to lie on. There are creative writing classes. The shop sells remedies consisting of poems sealed in bottles, poetic greetings cards and of course, lots of books: “I’ve managed to get the stock without going into debt, which has been difficult. But I was resourceful.” The shop opened on 3 October 2019, which — not uncoincidentally — is also National Poetry Day in the UK. “We’ve only been open for a few months. It’s like having a new baby. You love it, but it completely dominates everything. So I love it, but I also think I’ve created a monster!” 4. What did Alma do before starting the Poetry Pharmacy? A. She taught writing at a college. B. She ran an emergency clinic full-time. C. She wrote poems for a magazine. D. She worked in the book industry for years. 5. What helped Alma with the shop’s redecoration? A. Money from a Kickstarter campaign. B. Donations from her partner. C. Profits from her poetry consultations. D. Support from a publishing house. 6. What is special about The Poetry Pharmacy? A. It mainly sells rare antique books on poetry. B. It has the longest history among UK poetry shops. C. It provides free medical treatment for poetry lovers. D. It heals people with words and offers poetry-related services. 7. What does Alma mean by saying “I’ve created a monster” in the last paragraph? A. The shop brings more trouble. B. The shop takes up her time and energy. C. The shop fails to attract customers. D. The shop receives negative comments. C Consider these facts: The tennis champion Williams sisters are a generation apart, according to the Pew Research Center. Venus, born in 1980, is labelled “Gen X”; Serena, born in 1981, is a “millennial”. Meanwhile, Donald Trump and Michelle Obama both belong to the same generation. The former was born in 1946 while the latter was born in 1964, making them both “baby boomers”. Before you push these diverse personalities into generational stereotypes (刻板印象), let me stop you there: Just don’t. Generation labels, although widely adopted by the public, have no basis in social reality. In fact, in one recent survey, most people did not identify the correct generation for themselves, even when they were shown a list of options. This is not surprising since the labels are forced by survey researchers, journalists or marketing firms before the identities they are supposed to describe even exist. Instead of asking people which group they identify with and why, they just declare the labels and start making pronouncements about them. That’s not how social identity works. The practice of naming “generations” based on birth year goes back at least to the supposed “lost-generation” of the late 19th century. But as the tradition slid into a never-ending competition to be the first to propose the next name that sticks, it has produced gradually declining returns to social science and the public understanding. The supposed boundaries between generations are no more meaningful than the names they’ve been given. There is no research identifying the appropriate boundaries between generations, and there is no statistical basis for requiring the sweeping character traits (特征) that are believed to define them. In one article you might read that millennials are “liberal lions”, “downwardly mobile”, and “distrustful”; even though they also “get along well with their parents, respect their elders and work well with colleagues”. Ridiculous, clearly. But what’s the harm? Aren’t these labels just a bit of fun for writers? A method to attract readers and a way of communicating generational change, which no one would deny is a real phenomenon? We, in academic social science, study and teach social change, but we don’t study and teach these labels because they simply aren’t real. And in social science, reality still matters. Worse than irrelevant, such baseless labels drive people toward stereotyping and thoughtless character judgment. Measuring and describing social change is essential, and it can be useful to analyze the historical period in which people were born and raised, but drawing random lines between birth years and assigning names to them doesn’t help. Today there are lots of good alternatives to label generations. We can simply describe people by the decade in which they were born and define generational groups specifically related to a particular issue—such as 2020 school kids. With the arrival of “Generation Z”, there has never been a better time to get off this train. 8. What do the facts listed in Paragraph 1 imply? A. Different people have different opinions about generation labels. B. People with the same generation label may not be of similar age. C. Generational change can be measured by generation labels. D. Generation labels are widely adopted by celebrities. 9. The underlined word “sticks” in Paragraph 4 probably means ______. A. is understood B. is analyzed C. is described D. is accepted 10. According to the passage, the author may agree that ______. A. the generation label is a harmless device writers use to reflect reality B. generation boundaries are more meaningful than generation labels C. assigning character traits to a certain generation is misguided D. journalists should find alternative ways to judge character 11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Generation labels: It’s high time to retire them B. Generation labels: The ongoing debate will never end C. Generation labels: What do they say about who we are? D. Generation labels: Expand or bridge generational differences? D In All Her Fault, the latest TV drama released this month, Marrisa Irvine rushes to pick up her child from a playdate , but there is a problem as soon as she gets there: the person who answers the door has no idea who her child is — or who she is. ‌“I think you’ve got the wrong house,” they say. Her child has disappeared. The questions come fast and furious: Who made the playdate? Who checked out the nanny? Did mom really need to be at work? Like the title suggests, All Her Fault explores how women get stretched trying to strike a balance between a career and children — and get blamed if anything goes wrong. People often say that mothers are ‌“born caregivers”, yet in real life this praise soon turns into blame. When a child struggles at school or misbehaves in public, many eyes instinctively turn to the mother, while the father quietly fades into the background. In many families, the mother is treated as the ‌“default parent”. She is the one schools call first, the one who remembers every deadline and appointment. Because she is seen as the person most ‌“in charge”, people also feel free to hold her most accountable. Success is described as ‌“a devoted mother’s effort”, but failure is judged as ‌“a mother’s mistake”. In the past few decades, an ideal of ‌“intensive mothering” has spread through books, social media and parenting experts. The good mother is expected to pour in time, emotion and money, constantly planning, monitoring and improving herself. Any moment of tiredness or impatience can be read as proof that she is not trying hard enough. Fathers, however, are often placed in a different story line. In this script, a father is an extra helper rather than a full partner, and his main duty is assumed to be ‌“making a living”. When he occasionally cooks dinner or takes the child to the park, he is praised as a model dad going ‌“above and beyond”. The workplace and the media deepen this double standard. Mothers are seen as less hardworking employees once they have children, while fathers are seen as more reliable and mature. On screen and online, mothers who lose their temper are labelled as ‌“crazy” or ‌“toxic”, while fathers doing even the least are celebrated as heroes. So it is not that fathers are naturally more responsible or less at fault. Rather, society has written motherhood as a full-time responsibility that must be perfect, and fatherhood as optional extra credit. Until we rewrite this story and share care and blame more fairly, mothers will continue to stand in the harsh light of criticism while many fathers remain in the shadows. 12. In paragraph 4, the ‌“default parent” is the parent who ________. A. is mainly praised when the child succeeds, even if others also helped B. is blamed in public when something goes wrong but rarely given credit when things go well C. steps in as an extra helper only when the other caregiver is too busy making a living for the family D. is automatically contacted and relied on whenever something needs to be done for the child 13. According to paragraph 5, what is one major effect of the ideal of ‌“intensive mothering” on mothers? A. It leads moms to trust books, social media and parenting experts, so they feel surer about every decision. B. It makes moms feel they must pour in time and emotion only when their children are struggling or misbehaving. C. It keeps moms measured against a demanding standard where any tiredness or impatience is seen as failure. D. It encourages moms and dads to take turns planning, monitoring and improving themselves as equal caregivers. 14. Which of the following best sums up the main idea of the passage? A. It explains how expectations from home, work and media place heavier blame on moms than on dads. B. It advises working mothers to be extra careful when choosing playdates and nannies. C. It suggests if dads stopped working and stayed at home, double standards against mothers would disappear. D. It argues media images of crazy moms and heroic dads are a bigger problem than families or workplaces. 15. The passage mainly organized by opening with a TV drama scene and then ________. A. listing several real examples of moms being blamed, and finally accepting this as simply part of being a parent B. explaining why moms are born caregivers and implying that intensive mothering is a natural and desirable ideal C. focusing on dads going above and beyond, using them to argue that men face more unfair judgment than women D. contrasting how family, work and media treat moms and dads as caregivers, and calling for rewriting the story 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2.5分,共12.5分) Choosing the Right School Club for You High school is a time to explore interests, make friends, and develop new skills. Well, Ruby didn’t think she was. She sat next to Ollie and so she just copied him. This was the best way she had found to do maths and she didn’t have to think at all. One day the teacher said, “We will be having a maths test after lunch.” Ruby felt there were butterflies in the stomach. “Can I copy off you?” she whispered to Ollie. Ollie thought for a minute. “What will you give me?” he whispered back. Ruby showed Ollie a stone she had. It was round and smooth and the colour of the sea. “OK!” he said, “Give me the stone, and then you can copy my answers.” Ollie got full marks in the maths test and so did Ruby. Their names went on the top of the maths champion chart. Every week there was a maths test and every week Ollie and Ruby got full marks together. Ollie had to share the top place with Ruby, but it was worth it. He had a torch, a key chain, a golf ball and a gift box! One day, there was a maths test again. This time, Ruby picked a watch, thinking everything would go as usual—Ollie would let her copy and they would be on the top of the chart together again. But she was wrong. The headmaster came into Ruby’s class. “I want to see Ollie Simmons,” she said. Ollie was gone for a long time. Then the door opened. It was the headmaster again. “Ruby Riley,” she said, “Come with me, please.” Ruby felt like a bird in a cage — there was no way to escape. The headmaster told Ruby that every lunchtime for five weeks she had to do maths. “You have to learn to think for yourself,” she said. “And Ollie has to learn a lesson, too. He’s going to teach you.” 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Hanging her head down, Ruby felt so regretful for getting Ollie into trouble. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph2: Ollie proved to be a good teacher for Ruby. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2026-2027学年高一上学期秋季内部检测 英语试卷 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 第一部分 听力 (共两节,满分30分) 注意,回答听力部分时,请先将答案标在试卷上。 1. To make the workshop more effective, I would like to suggest implementing a peer mentoring system where experienced senior students can guide their juniors. Additionally, organizing regular theme-based sessions focusing on common student concerns such as exam stress or time management would be highly beneficial. To encourage wider participation, we could also introduce an anonymous problem submission box to help shy students voice their concerns comfortably. I sincerely hope these suggestions will be helpful. Thank you for your time and consideration. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 第二节 (满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】 Paragraph 1: Hanging her head down, Ruby felt so regretful for getting Ollie into trouble. She found Ollie after class and said softly, “I’m sorry I made you teach me. If I hadn’t copied your answers, none of this would have happened.” Ollie smiled gently and replied, “It’s my fault too. I shouldn’t have agreed to let you copy.” They decided to make the most of the lunchtime lessons. Ruby told Ollie that she really wanted to learn maths well instead of relying on others, which made Ollie feel happy. Paragraph 2: Ollie proved to be a good teacher for Ruby. He explained difficult problems with simple examples that Ruby could easily understand. Whenever Ruby got stuck, Ollie would ask her questions to guide her to think by herself instead of giving answers directly. After five weeks of hard work, Ruby took a maths test. She was nervous but confident because she had mastered the knowledge. When the results came out, Ruby got a high mark on her own. She realized that the joy of learning comes from one’s own efforts, and this was a lesson that she would never forget. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
