Passage1
The expression, “everybody’s doing it,” is very much at the center of peer pressure (同伴压力). It is a social influence applied on an individual in order to get that person to act or believe in a 1 way as a larger group. This 2 can be negative or positive, and can exist in both large and small groups.
People are social creatures by nature, and so it is hardly 3 that some part of their self-respect comes from the approval (认可) of others. This explains why the approval of peers, and the fear of 4 , is such a powerful force in many people’s lives. This instinct (本能) drives people to dress one way at home and another way at work, or to answer a simple “fine” when a stranger asks “how are you?” even if it is not necessarily true.
For certain individuals, 5 for social acceptance is so important that it becomes an addiction (上瘾): in order to satisfy the desire (渴望), they may go too far and lose their sense of right and wrong. Some young people may feel forced to use drugs, or join gangs (帮派) that 6 criminal behavior. Some adults may sometimes end up in debt (负债) because they are unable to hold back the desire to buy a house or car that they can’t afford in order to 7 the peers.
However, peer pressure is not always negative. A student whose friends do well in 8 may be motivated to work harder and get good grades. Players on a sports team may feel driven to play harder in order to help the team win. This type of influence can also get a friend off drugs, or to help an adult develop a good habit or drop a bad one.
Although peer pressure is sometimes quite obvious, some people may not even notice that it is affecting his or her behavior. For this reason, when making important decisions, such as choosing a career path or deciding on a major investment, simply going with an instinct is 9 . Instead, people should seriously consider why they feel attracted to taking a certain action. Is it because of their own values, long-term goals, or personal interests? They should also consider whether the real 10 behind their action is simply that everyone else is doing the same thing. Taking the time to think and make a wiser decision can lead to a proper and fulfilling life.

Passage 2
When something goes wrong, what would you say? It can be very 1 to say, “I know I am late, but it is not my fault. The car broke down.” It is probably not your fault, 2 once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop 3 on whom to blame. Focus on how to make the situation 4 than before. This is the winner’s key to success.
Winners are great at solving problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe your car should 5 more often. Or you may start to take along with you the useful phone numbers, so you 7 call for help when you’re in need. For 6 example, if your workmate lacks responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his fault rather than 8 blame the person. You should accept the fact and find creative ways 9 successfully, paying no attention to how your workmate failed to do his job well.
Being concentrated is a winner’s second key. For example, when I feel nervous, it 10 a lot to repeat words such as “calm”, “peace” or “focus”, either out loud or silently in my mind. It makes me feel more in control and increases my confidence. This habit can become second nature quite easily and is a powerful psychological tool.

Passage 3
Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher. Since I was a teenager, I 1 that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let 2 people know your feelings. If you are not able to communicate, things 3 bad. When you are mad at your parents, it is no use not talking to them. If you look up the word “communication” in dictionary, it will say “the exchange of ideas and information”. 4 a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by 5 a note. You have to make your parents 6 good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they say, but ask them politely to listen to you. 7 away only makes the situation worse.
This is an example. One night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she felt 8 would be rude of her to go home first. As a result, she was late getting home. Her parents were angry at first, but when Sophie explained 9 she was late, they weren’t so mad. Communication is the key factor there.
Relationship can only be improved with communication. Just remember, 10 you get into a situation like Sophie’s, tell your parents how you feel.

As a result, his work had 10 changed and influenced the study of theoretical physics all over the world.
11 he lived and worked abroad for a long time, he never lost his close ties to China. In his later years, at around 80 years old, Yang returned to China by 12 and made his home in Tsinghua Garden. There; he still 13 active. He not only helped guide key national science projects but also gave advice 14 the development of higher education and research in China. He even took on teaching work at Tsinghua. His achievement made young Chinese scientists believe 15 they could also do well in science and technology.
