“Today you have a choice. You can do some farm work,” Grandpa said, “or maybe you’d rather search for gold.”
“Gold?” Cory said. Bree smiled too. They had never searched for treasure before, and the idea sounded exciting. They loved staying on their grandparents’ farm, even if it meant doing chores. They especially enjoyed Grandpa’s word puzzles and Grandma’s peach cobbler (桃子烤甜点).
“You’re lucky I have a treasure map,” Grandpa said, pulling a paper from his pocket.
Cory unfolded it. It was a map of the farm with clues (线索) on it. “How do you know this is real?” he asked.
“Because I made it,” Grandpa replied. “I buried treasure on this land many years ago.”
The first clue read, “Start at mixed soil.”
“There’s soil everywhere,” Bree said.
“Remember how Grandpa thinks?” Cory said. “He likes to play with words.” He studied the letters. “Silo (筒仓)!” he cried. “The letters in soil are mixed up!”
They raced to the silo and found the next clue: “Shelter at centipede.” Grandpa had told them that centipede means “one hundred feet”, so they looked for a shelter about one hundred feet away.
The final clue said, “Go north to elephant nose.”
“An elephant’s nose is a trunk,” Bree said. An arrow on the shelter roof showed north. They ran to the only tree in that direction.
“But how can we dig under all these roots?” Cory asked.
Bree shook her head. “Grandpa said we wouldn’t need to dig.”
“Maybe the gold is up in the tree!” Cory said.
Just then Grandpa arrived. “Find anything yet?”
“We’re supposed to be searching for gold, but we’re looking in a tree,” Bree said.
Grandpa smiled. “The gold is not buried.”
Cory looked up. Juicy peaches hung from every branch.
“The peaches are the gold!” he cried.
Bree laughed. “You buried a peach pit, and it grew into a tree of golden fruit.”
“You two are clever!” Grandpa said. Together they gathered armloads of peaches. It looked like peach-cobbler night.
19. Why did Cory and Bree choose to search for gold?
A. They wanted to grow more peach trees. B. They thought the search would be exciting.
C. They hoped to finish the farm work quickly. D. They wanted to make a map for Grandpa.
20. How did Cory work out the clue “mixed soil”?
A. He mixed some kinds of soil. B. He changed the order of the letters.
C. He searched around the farm. D. He asked Grandpa for another clue.
21. Why did Cory and Bree run to the tree?
A. The clue made them think of a trunk. B. They could see gold under its roots.
C. Their grandpa was waiting beside it. D. The treasure map was hanging on it.
22. What can we learn from the story?
A. Farm work can be as exciting as a treasure hunt.
B. Word games are the best way for children to learn.
C. A real treasure hunt always needs a real treasure map.
D. Looking at things differently may lead to new discoveries.
【答案】19. B 20. B 21. A 22. D

Do you believe things can get better even when life gets tough? The International Day of Hope on 12 July celebrates the power of positive thinking to change lives.
What does hope mean?
Hope means wanting something good to happen and believing you can do something about it. Dr Kennedy-Moore, an expert on people’s thoughts and feelings, calls hope “the belief that a positive future is possible”. You can be hopeful about everyday goals, such as learning a difficult guitar tune, or bigger dreams, such as becoming a scientist. But hope is more than wishing. It involves having a goal, finding ways to work towards it and believing in yourself.
Why is it important to be positive?
It is not always easy to feel hopeful, especially when something seems out of your control. However, looking on the bright side does more than make you feel better. Scientists say that when you feel hopeful, parts of your brain that help solve problems become more active. Your brain also produces chemicals that can make you want to keep going. Hope can make you happier, lower stress and help you keep trying when things are difficult.
How can I think positively?
You cannot always change what happens in the world or what other people do, but you can choose your own actions. Kennedy-Moore suggests focusing on what you can control. If a problem feels too big, think of one small step that could make things better. You might make a card for someone who is having a hard time or join a clean-up to help nature.
It also helps to notice negative thoughts. If you think, “What if everything goes wrong?”, try asking, “What if things turn out OK?” Positive thinking does not mean ignoring (忽视) problems. It means facing them with hope and taking useful action.
23. Which person shows “hope” as described in Paragraph 2?
A. Leo wishes for good results but makes no plan.
B. Mia sets a goal and keeps working towards it.
C. Tom waits for somebody else to solve his problem.
D. Amy gives up when she finds a task difficult.
24. Why does the writer mention a guitar tune and becoming a scientist?
A. To give examples of different goals. B. To compare two popular interests.
C. To introduce useful learning skills. D. To show which dream is harder.
25. What should you do when a problem feels too big?
A. Wait until things change. B. Stop thinking about it.
C. Start with one small step. D. Prepare for the worst result.
26. What is the text mainly about?
A. How our brains solve difficult problems.
B. Why everyone should have a big dream.
C. How positive thinking makes people successful.
D. What hope means, why it matters and how to practise it.
【答案】23. B 24. A 25. C 26. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍国际希望日,解释希望的含义、保持积极心态的重要性以及如何进行积极思考。
【23题详解】
第二段解释希望的内涵“It involves having a goal, finding ways to work towards it and believing in yourself.”,这直接说明希望需要设定目标并且为之努力,Mia sets a goal and keeps working towards it.这一行为符合这个定义。
【24题详解】
第二段举例说明“You can be hopeful about everyday goals, such as learning a difficult guitar tune, or bigger dreams, such as becoming a scientist.”,作者列举这两个例子,是为了给出不同目标的示例。
【25题详解】
第四段给出建议“If a problem feels too big, think of one small step that could make things better.”,这直接说明当问题看起来太大时,可以从一个小步骤开始。
【26题详解】

D
A group of sunflower sea stars has been found in the waters off northern California in the US, almost ten years after experts feared that this kind of sea star had disappeared from the area.
The discovery matters because sunflower sea stars help protect kelp (大型海藻) forests. Kelp gives many sea animals food and shelter. The sunflower sea star is one of the largest sea stars on Earth—some can grow to about a metre wide—and one of its main foods is the purple sea urchin (海胆). They once helped keep purple sea urchin numbers under control.
Between 2013 and 2017, a disease killed about six billion sea stars along the coast of North America. With fewer sunflower sea stars to eat them, the number of purple sea urchins rose quickly. The urchins feed on kelp, and there were soon so many that they destroyed (破坏,毁掉) large areas of kelp forest.
This was a serious problem. Kelp forests off California provide food and shelter for nearly 800 kinds of sea animals, including sea otters, sharks and sea stars. According to a US government group, sea urchins and rising ocean temperatures together caused the loss of about 90% of kelp forests in some waters along the US west coast.
Scientists had spent years searching underwater in the area for sunflower sea stars. Recently, they found 18 of them. Tyler Mears, one of the team members, said the discovery was very exciting. He said finding them after so long felt like seeing something people thought had disappeared forever. Researcher Andrew Kim added that finding a wild sunflower sea star alive gives scientists a valuable chance to answer questions they could not study before.
Scientists now hope to increase the number of sunflower sea stars again. If their numbers rise, they may bring purple sea urchins back under control. That, in turn, could give kelp forests a chance to flourish again.
27. What happened after large numbers of sunflower sea stars died?
A. Kelp forests became larger along the coast.
B. Purple sea urchins damaged more kelp forests.
C. Ocean temperatures became lower in the area.
D. Sunflower sea stars returned quickly to the coast.
28. Which chain best explains why the new discovery offers hope?
A. More sea stars → more sea urchins → less kelp B. More kelp → fewer sea stars → more sea urchins
C. Fewer sea urchins → fewer sea stars → less kelp D. More sea stars → fewer sea urchins → more kelp
29. What does the underlined word “flourish” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Grow well. B. Move away. C. Stay hidden. D. Break apart.
30. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To teach people how to rebuild kelp forests.
B. To compare sunflower sea stars with sea urchins.
C. To report a new discovery and explain its importance.
D. To encourage people to explore the California coast.
【答案】27. B 28. D 29. A 30. C
第三段提到“With fewer sunflower sea stars to eat them, the number of purple sea urchins rose quickly. The urchins feed on kelp, and there were soon so many that they destroyed (破坏,毁掉) large areas of kelp forest.”,这直接说明了大量向日葵海星死亡后,海胆数量激增并破坏了更多的海藻林。
【28题详解】
最后一段提到“If their numbers rise, they may bring purple sea urchins back under control. That, in turn, could give kelp forests a chance to flourish again.”,这直接说明了新的发现带来希望的原因是:海星增多导致海胆减少,从而使海藻林得以恢复(即 More sea stars → fewer sea urchins → more kelp)。
【29题详解】
最后一段提到“That, in turn, could give kelp forests a chance to flourish again.”,结合上文海胆破坏海藻林以及科学家希望海星数量增加以控制海胆的语境,这直接说明了“flourish”的意思是生长良好(Grow well)。
【30题详解】
第一段提到“A group of sunflower sea stars has been found...”,中间段落解释了这一发现的重要性(海星控制海胆从而保护海藻林),这直接说明了文章的主要目的是报告一个新发现并解释其重要性。
