Life can be challenging, particularly for people with autism (自闭症). It is an illness that does not have one single cause and can take many forms. Most often, it creates difficulty in communicating and getting along with others. Serious autism may leave someone unable to speak completely or function without assistance. But many people with autism have led satisfying or even outstanding lives. One such person is Haley Moss.
As a three-year-old, Haley was able to do difficult tasks such as finishing large puzzles. However, she couldn’t say simple words like “Mommy”. The concerned parents took her to a doctor. After careful examination, the doctors found her to have autism. At the time, the family was given some extremely negative news. “My parents were told that I would be lucky to have friends or even hold a low-paying job,” Haley said. Yet, by getting professional help, Haley was able to join regular school classes at four. She did quite well at school, although with her poor social skills, it was hard for her to make friends.
Eventually, Haley became so successful that she made history. After graduating from the University of Miami, she got hired by a law firm and became the first autistic lawyer in Florida. Being a lawyer wasn’t her first choice of career, though. Previous to going to law school, she studied psychology (心理学) and considered becoming a psychologist to help others with autism. However, Haley discovered she didn’t enjoy the science classes, so she decided that becoming a lawyer (律师) would fit her interests better. In addition to being a legal professional, Haley has also published books and has a talent for painting. Most definitely, Haley has far gone beyond what people originally expected of her and proven the experts wrong. In short, she has become a role model for others with autism.
24. What can be inferred about autism according to paragraph 1?
A. It affects people in different ways.
B. It leads to the loss of speech function.
C. It is an illness that can be easily cured.
D. It prevents people from leading successful lives.
25. What negative prediction did Haley’s parents receive from the doctor?
A. Haley would never learn to speak.
B. Haley would struggle with puzzles.
C. Haley would fail to graduate from school.
D. Haley might not have friends or hold a basic job.
26. Why did Haley choose to become a lawyer instead of a psychologist?
A. She thought psychology too difficult to learn.
B. She hoped to become the first autistic lawyer.
C. She wanted to help people with autism as a lawyer.
D. She realized entering the field of law better suited her interests.
27. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Career in Law: The Journey of Haley Moss.
B. Getting Through Challenges: The Story of Autism.
C. Understanding Autism: Causes and Challenges.
D. Haley Moss: Overcoming Autism and Making History.

Hybrid vehicles (混合动力汽车), also known as hybrid electric cars (HECs), are automobiles powered by two or more energy sources. Compared with most ordinary cars on the present-day roads, they have several unique features. The biggest distinction is that HECs rely on both petrol and electricity for operation. A hybrid car is fitted with both a battery-driven motor and a petrol-powered engine.
Producing a hybrid vehicle costs slightly more than a standard car, even with a smaller engine. The higher price results from the engine structure with more parts. It has special machine parts that support its two power operation mode of petrol and electricity. Besides, it is equipped with a computer system different from that of traditional cars. Although it costs more to buy, it runs more cheaply than petrol-only vehicles. When a hybrid car stops at traffic lights or travels at a speed under 15 miles per hour, its special computer makes it run only on electric power. Once the computer detects the car needs extra power, it will restart the petrol engine. The computer keeps judging in real time whether the car should use electricity, petrol, or a mix of both.
Since electric power assists its operation, a hybrid car consumes far less fuel (燃料) than most vehicles. In fact, it is among the most fuel-efficient cars available now. On average, it can travel 50 to 60 miles per gallon of petrol. Such high fuel efficiency cuts drivers’ costs and helps save limited oil resources. Hybrid cars are also environmentally friendly in other ways. For example, they produce no harmful polluting gases when running on electricity.
Despite these differences from regular cars, hybrid vehicles deliver the same driving experience. They share the same control methods for speeding up and slowing down. However, HECs are generally smaller in size than petrol cars. Their smooth, aerodynamic (空气动力学的) body improves fuel efficiency, yet it fails to increase the inner space of the car.
28. Which of the following best describes the features of a hybrid car?
A. Safe and reliable. B. Costly but long-lasting.
C. High price, low pollution. D. Small engine with stronger power.
29. What controls the switch between petrol and electric power in a hybrid car?
A. The engine. B. The battery. C. The driver. D. The computer.
30. What is the main purpose of inventing hybrid cars?
A. To save energy resources. B. To improve driving services.
C. To cut down the cost of buying a car. D. To create a new driving experience.
31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To persuade readers to buy hybrid cars.
B. To explain what makes hybrid cars special.
C. To compare hybrid cars with petrol cars in price.
D. To argue that hybrid cars will replace ordinary cars.

A research team from AMOLF in Amsterdam has created a soft robot that walks, jumps, and swims — all without a brain, electronics, or AI. As described in the study published in Science, it has no computer, no software, and no sensors. And still, it moves with surprising autonomy and speed, simply because of its body and how it works with the world.
So, what’s really driving it? Behind the movement is a principle you’ve probably seen, though you might have missed. Think of those shaking, air-filled tube (软管) dancers waving freely around in front of gas stations. The same physics that makes them move could hold the key to the next generation of autonomous robots.
Powered by a continuous stream of air alone, each of the robot’s soft, tube-shaped legs begins to wave. On its own, each leg waves around without a clear pattern. But when many are combined together, their movements quickly synchronize. “Suddenly, order come from a mess,” says the first author Alberto Comoretto. “No controllers, no programming. Group movements that are not simple come just from simple ways of working together.” Even more surprising, the synchronization adapts. If the robot runs into an obstacle (障碍), it changes its movement. When it moves from land to water, it quickly changes to swimming freely. All the movement comes from the close combination between body and environment.
The research challenges the traditional idea that robots need control systems that are not simple to realize lifelike behavior. “Simple objects, like tubes, can give rise to difficult and functional behavior, if we understand how to make use of the basic physics,” says lead investigator Bas Overvelde. “There is no brain, no computer. In fact, it’s a machine. But when properly designed, it can do better than many robotic systems and behave like an artificial creature.”
Possible future applications range from smart medicine to space technology: safe micro robots that can be swallowed (吞服) and give out drugs after autonomously reaching the target tissue, robotic wearable suits matching the walking steps without processors, reducing power consumption while enhancing human strength. More broadly, these examples illustrate how this research opens doors to mechanical systems that behave as if they had a computer, without actually needing one.
32. Why does the author mention tube dancers in paragraph 2?
A. To show the need for observation.
B. To explain the way soft robot works.
C. To stress the wide use of robots.
D. To introduce a daily application.
33. What does the underlined word “synchronize” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Slow down. B. Change direction. C. Consume energy. D. Fit together.
34. What enables the soft robot to change its movement?
A. Its ability to get over obstacle.
B. Its reliable performance underwater.
C. Its way of working with the surroundings.
D. Its connection with a computer.
35. What should robots be like according to Bas Overvelde?
A. Physics-based. B. Function-focused. C. Cost-effective. D. Environmentally-friendly.

Wendy grew up in a small and remote village in Wyoming, America. Her world was one of wild mountains and endless fields, but she had a strong passion for sports, especially long running. Wendy always dreamed to be an Olympic marathon runner. Yet a lack of money was her biggest challenge. Her first “running shoes” were broken ones. She trained alone on dirt paths, with no coach to guide her. Her only guide for speed was the beat of her own breath, and her only training plan was to run farther each day than the last. People shook their heads, regarding her big dream as an unrealistic fantasy. “How could a girl like her, with nothing, ever compete with the professionally trained athletes from the cities?”
Yet Wendy’s determination only hardened. Seeing her talents and hard practice, her parents, though poor, supported her in their own silent ways — a meal after a long run, a touch on the back, and the precious savings they gathered together to buy her a single pair of proper running shoes. When she finally saved enough for the registration fee to a city marathon, it felt like a great wonder.
The big day did come. Wendy and her parents arrived at the spot with uncontrollable excitement. There were seas of people — volunteers, news reporters and well-equipped athletes. Wendy wanted to perform well to prove that determination could get over any difficulty. It was super-hot that day, but Wendy managed to come to the last 400 meters. Behind her lay 41 kilometers and 795 meters of Los Angeles road, but every step forward cost more than the last ten kilometers combined. She had missed the last water station — the cup had slid through her shaking fingers. The heat had grown teeth, stole the strength from her legs, and clouded her mind. Suddenly, darkness flashed across her eyes. She lost her balance and crashed to the ground.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右。2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: At this time, two orange-shirted medical volunteers jogged toward her.
Paragraph 2: Finally, the finish line was just 10 meters away.
