B A graduate of London’s best law school, William was regarded by many in his field as one of the best lawyers (律师) in London. Few people would have guessed that William loved to write poetry in his spare time. William’s passion (热爱) for this hobby began when, one day in a bookshop, he came across a small book of poems that had mistakenly been put in the law section. Reading it, William admired how the author had expressed so much with just a few carefully selected words and then wondered if he himself could develop a similar talent. From childhood, William had always thrown himself into things. So, he soon read the major works of all the great British poets and became familiar with many of Europe’s most famous poets, too. He had a particular admiration for Shakespeare and the German poet Goethe, but his favourite poet was the Irishman William Butler Yeats — the man that he had been named after, his mother proudly reminded him. So, almost from the day that he was first inspired, William had begun writing poems of his own. He did not know if he had any real talent, but he did know that the words flowed both easily and quickly from his pen. He enjoyed putting words together in a way that suggested different meanings — partly because this was exactly the opposite of what he was required to do as a lawyer. He had no name for the collection of poems that he had written and collected over the years. He simply referred to them all as “The Book”. The name, of course, clearly revealed his subconscious (潜意识的) desire that his poems would one day be published. But he had neither the confidence in his own abilities to approach a publisher, nor the desire to read a bad review if the critics did not like his work. William’s wife would often remind him, in that gentle way of hers, that he was old enough now not to care what others thought of him or to avoid doing something simply because he thought he might fail. 24. Why did William appreciate the poetry in the bookshop? A. He himself had written poetry too. B. He liked how the words were used. C. It reminded him of a forgotten hobby. D. It gave him a break from studying law. 25. Which of the following can best describe William? A. Easy-going. B. Ambitious. C. One who lacks willpower. D. One who goes all out. 26. Why did William call his collection of poems “The Book”? A. He hadn’t yet found a good name for it. B. He was advised to do so by a publisher. C. He secretly wanted them to be published. D. He had already written enough to fill an entire book. 27. What do we know about William’s wife? A. She encouraged him to believe in himself. B. She thought that he did not value her opinion. C. She didn’t think he should try to publish his poems. D. She seemed to be the only one who liked his poetry. C Electronic books have changed the way many people read for pleasure. Now online textbooks are changing the way some students learn and some teachers teach. More than one hundred and seventy-five thousand students attend the public schools in Fairfax County, Virginia, outside Washington. Last year, the school system used digital books in fifteen schools. This school year, middle schools and high schools changed from printed to electronic textbooks in their social studies classes. Luke Rosa is a history teacher at Falls Church High School. His students work on laptop computers at school. He explains the idea to them this way, “I mean, it’s just like a regular textbook, except it’s got it all online.” Peter Noonan, an assistant superintendent (助理监督) of schools, said, “The world’s changing. And the online textbooks can change right along with the events that are happening.” Digital books also cost less than printed textbooks, he added. A student named Melanie Reuter said, “I don’t have to carry a textbook around, so that’s nice.” But another student said, “I don’t like it because the Internet sometimes doesn’t work.” Students also need access to the Internet when they are not at school. About ten percent of students in Fairfax County do not have a computer or online access at home. Public libraries in the county have free Internet. There are also after-school computer labs as well as computer clubhouses supported by the county. Middle school student Slieman Hakim is happy about that. He said, “My family only has one computer; my sister and I both do our homework on it. So I come here to do my homework. It’s good.” Other school systems in the area are also considering online textbooks. 28. Which is one of the disadvantages of digital textbooks according to the passage? A. They’re more expensive. B. They can’t be used if the computer is offline. C. They’re soon out of date. D. Reading online does harm to students’ eyes. 29. Why does Slieman Hakim feel happy? A . He is offered a free computer to do his homework. B. He doesn’t have to do his homework at home. C. He has access to the Internet to study at any place. D. He needn’t share a computer with his sister to do homework. 30. What can we learn from the passage? A. All students like digital textbooks because they are new. B. Digital textbooks are more beautiful than paper textbooks. C. Students can do their homework in the computer clubhouses. D. The lessons online are completely different from those in paper textbooks. 31. What’s the purpose of the passage? A. To report the use of electronic textbooks in many schools. B. To show how to use electronic textbooks. C. To encourage more schools to use electronic textbooks. D. To tell readers that electronic textbooks will replace regular textbooks. D Whom should you marry? Where should you live? How should you spend your time? For centuries, people have relied on their gut instincts (直觉) to figure out the answers to these life-changing questions. Now, though, there is a better way. We are living through a data explosion, as vast amounts of information about all aspects of human behavior have become more and more accessible. We can use this big data to help determine the best course to chart. There has long been overwhelming — and often surprising — evidence that algorithms (算法) can be much better than people at making difficult decisions. Researchers have collected data on various kinds of choices people make, the information they base those choices on, and how things turn out. They have found, for example, that a simple data-driven algorithm would have been better than judges at deciding whether a defendant should stay in prison or be released; better than doctors at deciding whether a patient should undergo surgery; and better than school principals at deciding which teachers should be promoted. The power of data analysis has been proved in the sports and business worlds, too. As made famous by the book and movie Moneyball, baseball teams found that algorithms were better than scouts (球探) at picking players, and better than managers at picking strategies. In finance, the hedge fund Renaissance Technologies dramatically defeated competitors by seeking out patterns in stock market data and using them to inform its investment strategy. Tech firms in Silicon Valley have found that data from experiments provide better insights into how to design their websites than designers could. These are the early days of the data revolution in decision-making. I am not claiming that we can completely count on algorithms to make our lifestyle choices, though we might get to that point in the future. I am claiming instead that we can all dramatically improve our decision-making by consulting evidence mined from thousands or millions of people who faced dilemmas similar to ours. And we can do that now. 32. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Big data is a double-edged sword. B. Data revolution will change people’s life. C. Big data is helpful in making important decisions. D. Algorithms behaves better than people in many fields. 33. In which aspect might algorithms NOT defeat people according to paragraph 2? A. Court Rulings. B. Job Promotions. C. Operative Estimation. D. Teaching Practices. 34. What is the writing purpose of paragraph 3? A. To provide further evidence. B. To show potential applications. C. To encourage the use of big data. D. To explain how to use algorithms. 35. Which of the following will the author most probably agree with? A. Algorithms offer perfect advice now. B. Big data will certainly cause a revolution. C. Big data can make up for our lack of experience. D. Algorithms are bound to be fully trusted in the future. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面的短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you’re hoping to learn how to become a poet, here are some tips that will set you up for success. Learn to write poetry in a writing class. Whether you’re a beginner or someone who’s been writing for years, a writing class is always one of the best ways to learn to write poetry. Writing classes are especially valuable as they are designed and taught by writers who are currently publishing and have experience in the contemporary (当代的) poetry landscape. There may be shelves of books on the craft (技巧) of writing at the bookstore. 36.________ Writing classes also offer the structure and guidance that most beginning writers — and even writers with a few years of experience benefit from. 37.________ Writing is difficult, but seems much less impossible when you’re not doing it alone. Read. To learn writing techniques from published work, it is important to read critically. 38.________ You should ask questions about what a poem is doing and how it is doing it. Reading is an opportunity to expand your grasp of what poetry is and can be. Generate writing. As you learn how to write poetry, writing often goes hand in hand with reading. Generating writing, however, is often easier said than done. 39.________ Writing is a practice, which means the more you do it, the smoother the process will be. 40.________ The writing journey can sometimes feel lonely, and the path to becoming a poet can also feel directionless. In times like these, I find learning about different poets’ life journeys particularly encouraging. It also shows you that there’s no one way to become a poet. A. Look for models. B. Get curious about the field. C. Writing courses also offer a supportive community. D. It can be especially difficult if you’re just starting out. E. This often means slowing down to seriously consider a poem. F. It’s important for you to learn about existing literary traditions and practices. G. However, nothing beats the personalized tips that a working writer can give you. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面的短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 Have you seen people who take pictures of food for more than 10 minutes before eating? Then, she would spend five minutes on 45 the dishes in a seemingly random but in fact arranged order. Then the most important part: taking pictures. After that, she would choose one of the 46 and click in the filter (过滤软件) app. The food eventually looked 10 times more delicious than it really was, but we had no 47 to really enjoy it — it all went cold. Actually Chen’s real life is much less elegant. For example, she hates to wash the dishes, so she leaves them in the sink for days. Many people care too much about others’ opinions and try hard to 48 others. They find it hard to be 49 and to accept themselves, and thus they are afraid to show their real life on social media. What they are trying to prove is 50 what they lack in reality. But this will not bring any change to reality, as they still 51 the same old pattern of life. If they really want an elegant life, they should put more 52 into achieving it 53 fabricating (伪造) it. Being more confident, 54 themselves and trying their best to be better is much more meaningful than 55 their life on social media. 41. A. envied B. admired C. recognized D. defeated 42. However, for young people today it 57.__________ (consider) completely normal to share pictures of their lives and interact online every day. However, 58.__________ concerns people is that too much time on social media may have some negative effects. Researchers measured people’s attitudes and feelings before and after visiting social media sites. They found that the more time people spent on social media, the more unhappy they became. There are a number of reasons for this. When 59.__________ (surf) the social media, people often see photographs and stories showing beautiful holidays, fun parties and fashionable clothes. People rarely post negative stories or bad pictures, 60.__________ can be misleading. For those looking at these pictures and comparing them to their own lives, they can end up feeling sad and depressed. They might think their lives are 61.__________ (bad) in comparison. Even for those people who post positive stories and pictures, they also can feel stressed and worried. 62.__________ number of “likes” and comments on their posts can make them anxious about their 63.__________ (popular). Of course, there is also the problem of “cyber bullying”. The doctors talked about the potential side effects of the drugs that might occur over the next two years of treatment. When our parents told our sister she had cancer, her biggest concern was losing her hair. “Will all my hair really fall out? Will people make fun of me? “she asked, her voice filled with worry. “Don’t worry, “I later told her in secret. “When you lose your hair, I’ll shave mine with a razor (剃刀) and we’ll both be bald (秃头的). We’ll walk down the street proudly with our bald heads held high. We’ll swim, go to parks and play at the beach with our bald heads.” “Promise? “she asked. “Promise, “I replied, thinking it was a small sacrifice (牺牲) as long as it could cheer her and help her recover. The days and weeks of treatment began to affect her little body. As the doctors had warned, she began to lose her hair. At first, I found some on her clothes and towels. A short time later, I found her hair on the backs of the sofas and chairs she’d been on. Before long, there were masses of hair on her pillow every morning as she awoke from her restless sleep. A few days later, she was finally completely bald. Her head was very smooth and soft as I held her. It reminded me of that wonderful time when I held her in my arms and was amazed at how lucky I was to have such a beautiful and healthy baby sister. Her bald head was beautiful, but it also showed the signs of her battle with cancer. One afternoon at home, I thought it was time to shave my head. However, it was then that I began seriously worrying about something. How ugly would I become when I was bald? Would my parents — who always encouraged us to maintain a certain image — scold (责备) me for having my head shaved? Would people, especially my classmates, make fun of me? 注意:续写词数应为150个左右。 I was looking at myself in the mirror when my sister approached._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “It’s beautiful. Please also help shave our heads,” our parents smiled.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
