When I was in Year 7, Mum put up a piece of paper on the kitchen wall. It was a weekly plan. It showed wake-up times, study hours, and even a “no phone after 9:30 p.m.” rule. I looked at it and said, “This won’t work.” Mum just smiled and said, “We’ll see.”
The first few days were messy. I didn’t check the list. I stayed up late watching videos and rushed through my homework. On Friday of that week, I got my school report for maths — 63 out of 100. That evening, Mum pointed at the paper and asked calmly, “Still think it won’t work?” I stayed quiet.
The next Monday, Mum handed me a pencil. “You write the plan,” she said. So I did, though not very seriously at first. I set shorter study times and left more breaks. But this time, something felt different — it was my list.
On Wednesday night, my phone rang with a video call. I wanted to reach for it, but then I noticed the paper. I didn’t want to mark “maths practice” without doing it. So I didn’t answer the phone. Instead, I sat down and studied for twenty minutes.
The next day, when the teacher returned our maths homework, mine turned out to be the only one without mistakes! She even held it up in class. “Good improvement,” she said. That small moment stayed with me.
Over the next few weeks, the paper on the wall changed again and again. I began to follow it more often. And when the next maths test came, I got 85.
Later that day, I thought about what really changed. The list itself wasn’t special. The difference was that I stopped treating it as something Mum forced me to do and started using it as something I chose. The real change happened inside me.
43. What happened on the first Friday after Mum put up the plan?
A. The writer got a low score in maths. B. The writer changed the plan himself.
C. The writer followed the plan perfectly. D. The writer had a long talk with his mother.
44. Why did Mum ask the writer to write the plan?
A. To save her time. B. To make the plan more fun.
C. To help the writer follow it more actively. D. To give the writer a feeling of achievement.
45. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The phone. B. The paper. C. The video call. D. The maths practice.
46. How did the writer probably feel when the teacher held up his maths homework?
A. Happy but worried. B. Happy and calm.
C. Surprised and worried. D. Surprised but happy.
47. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A. Failure is the mother of success. B. A good study plan should include breaks.
C. The power to change lies in our own hands. D. Small successes can bring about big changes.
D
Isaac Newton was a quiet boy. Having lost his father before he was born, he grew up with his grandmother. At 18, soon after he finished schooling, Newton would spend his time making small tools. His head teacher saw the genius in him and asked his mother to send him to the university. Newton set out for Cambridge in June, 1661.
Newton was always trying to understand and explain a lot of things in nature. To test a question about colors, he would stare at the sun with one eye until all the colors changed. As a result, he had to stay in the dark for some time before his eye returned to normal. Newton was the first to show us that white light is made up of colors mixed together. He was also the first person to understand the rainbow and explain how it forms.
A story goes like this: One day, an apple fell on Newton’s head, and it was then that Newton realized that the apple fell towards Earth and didn’t go anywhere else. He thought to himself, “How did this happen?” After doing some experiments, he later knew all objects always fall towards Earth’s centre because Earth attracts them. He realized that every object in the universe attracts every other object towards it. Then Newton discovered the law of universal gravitation. Newton was an English physicist, mathematician and astronomer. Because of the significant work Newton has done, he is widely considered as one of the greatest scientists of all time.
48. What can we learn about Newton from Paragraph 1?
A. He made some small tools.
B. He never studied in a university
C. He didn’t like doing farm work.
D. He lost his mother at a young age
49. Which words can best describe Newton when he was testing a question about colors?
A. careful and lucky. B. skillful and smart
C. relaxed and excited. D. hardworking and patient.
50. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. When an apple fell on Newton’s head.
B. How one object attracts another object.
C. Why Newton was famous among people.
D. How Newton made the important discovery.
51. What is the text structure of the passage?
A. Life experience — achievements — comment
B. Opinion — Examples — Explanation
C. Problem — Process — Solution
D. Comparison — Analysis — Conclusion
52. What can you learn from Newton’s experiences?
A. Time waits for no man. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Roses given, fragrance in hand. D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
