Here are different opinions from different people on China’s changes.
China, like India, was a developing country and day-to-day life always told us that things were in short supply in1977.
China has lifted 740 million people out of poverty (贫困) in the last four decades (十年). It has become better and better.
—An Indian friend
“It’s much easier to travel to foreign countries now, and it’s not very expensive.”
“When we were young, we wanted to travel to many places, but we failed to do so for many reasons,” said a retired (退休的) Chinese man, Mr. Qu.
What has changed is that I did not have to attend after-school classes. At primary school, I had lots of homework. Also, when I was in middle school, I had to get up at 6 a.m. and didn’t get home until 9 p.m, but I had time to play sports with my friend, watch TV and read my favorite books, and so on.
Now, each parent wants their child to receive a better education, and with more parents sending their children to after-school classes, a strange, tiring and endless competition has appeared. So it is a great luxury for children to have their own time to relax and do sports.

Over the last few centuries, there have been many changes in our lives.
To start with, people were not able to travel such a long distance in such a short time in the past. Planes were not very popular at that time because they used to be a very expensive way to travel. Nowadays, more and more people can travel by plane and we can take many other fast and comfortable vehicles, such as cars and high-speed trains.
Secondly, in the past, people had to work much harder because they did not have the tools we have today. Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by computers and machines.
Thirdly, in the past, the living conditions were not as good as they are now. There were no bathrooms or running water in many houses, and many people could not buy things like refrigerators, TV sets or washing machines. Now, most families have several of these things.

In the past, we kept in touch with others by writing letters or sending faxes, but now we have many other ways to choose from, such as making a phone call, sending e-mails or messages and chatting online. Moreover, we can even see the people whom we are making a phone call with through mobile phones, and we can see each other while chatting online. The most surprising thing is that we can make a phone call with the astronauts and see them when they are in space. What a magical thing!

C. Fast development of science. D. We live a happy life now.
Double victory! On March 28 and 29, a motorcycle made by the Chinese brand ZXMOTO won both races at the Portuguese round of the Superbike World Championship (WSBK).
WSBK is not only a competition where riders race for speed, but also a stage for companies to present their production ability. The victory marks the first time a Chinese motorcycle brand has won this event. For many years, the sport was dominated by big motorcycle brands such as Italy’s Ducati, Germany’s BMW and Japan’s Honda.
Zhang Xue, 39, founder of ZXMOTO, told Xinhua that the winning motorcycle has a more powerful engine and lighter body than other motorcycles in the race.
Years ago, it was almost impossible for a Chinese brand to build such high-performance motorcycles. That’s because there were no powerful China-made engines. Key technologies to improve engine performance were also locked by leading foreign companies.
Zhang has seen and taken part in the development of China’s motorcycle industry. As a motorcycle lover, he has worked as a repairman and a racer. In 2013, he went to Chongqing, China’s motorcycle capital, where he began building his first motorcycle.
In 2024, Zhang founded ZXMOTO and focused on researching and developing engines. His aim matches China’s goal of high-quality development and innovation (创新).
Today, Chongqing is home to more than 40 motorcycle makers and over 400 components (零部件) producers. “In only one market, you can find all the components you need to build a motorcycle,” Zhang told Xinhua. “I believe our victory will make China’s motorcycle industry more confident, and force the international community to reconsider how they view us.”
48. The underlined word “dominated” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. controlled B. started C. changed D. followed
49. What gives ZXMOTO an advantage over other brands?
A. A stronger body. B. A better braking system.
C. A more powerful engine. D. More government support.
50. Why was it hard for Chinese brands to make high-performance motorcycles in the past?
A. They didn’t have skilled workers.
B. They didn’t have key technologies.
C. They couldn’t find riders to test their motorcycles.
D. There were few component producers in China.
51. What does Zhang Xue say is special about Chongqing?
A. It is famous for being the home of racing.
B. He used to work as a repairman there.
C. It offers the best business environment.
D. It has a complete motorcycle production chain.
52. How might ZXMOTO’s victory influence China’s motorcycle industry?
A. China will control global motorcycle production.
B. China will face more competition worldwide.
C. China’s motorcycle industry will get more confidence.
D. China’s government will focus on producing race motorcycles.

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to tell you something about my hometown and its changes.
Great changes have taken place here. Years ago, the roads were narrow and dirty. People lived in small houses. But now wide roads run through the town. Trees and flowers are everywhere. People move into bright new flats and enjoy much better living conditions. The person who inspires me is a local teacher. She has stayed in our village for 20 years, helping poor children get education. She never gives up.
I love my hometown deeply. I hope it will become more beautiful.
Yours,
Li Hua
