When 16-year-old Wang Lin from Beijing first saw a shadow puppet show at the age of seven, she was fascinated. The colourful puppets and the performers’ skilled finger movements seemed magical to her. “I felt really close to this art right away,” she says.
However, when Wang Lin entered high school, things changed. Her classmates thought puppetry was old-fashioned and made fun of her hobby. “They said it was for old people, not for teenagers,” she recalls. Slowly, Wang Lin felt less close to puppetry and stopped practising for almost two years.
Last summer, Wang Lin attended a traditional culture camp in her city. There, she met 70-year-old Master Chen, a famous puppet performer. “Puppetry is not just an art—it carries our history and stories,” Master Chen told the teenagers. “If you give it a chance, it will speak to you.”
Master Chen’s words touched Wang Lin deeply. She started practising again, this time with more passion (激情) than ever. She also used social media to share videos of her performances. To her surprise, many of her classmates started showing interest. “Now they think it’s pretty cool!” she says happily.
Wang Lin now leads a teenage puppet team at her school. “It’s our duty to keep this art alive,” she says. “Puppetry is not old-fashioned at all. It’s amazing, and everyone can feel close to it if they try.”

Chinese researchers have discovered the earliest known writings on horses, written on bamboo strips (竹简) dating back over 2, 000 years to the Warring States Period (475 BC—221 BC) .
Five bamboo strips related to horses were found by Tsinghua University’s Research and Conservation Center. Experts say these are the earliest organized documents in China covering horse checking, animal care, training, and guidance.
Associate Professor Shi Xiaoli said that during the Warring States Period, people often fought with chariots (战车) , so knowing how to ride a horse was very important. The newly shared text about how to guide horses fills a long-time missing part in ancient Chinese writings about how to ride horses.
Huang Dekuan, director of the center, noted that horses played an important role in ancient society. Better ways of training and raising horses helped people travel more easily, made the army stronger, supported cultural exchange, and pushed human society to grow.
Researchers say that this discovery gives us useful information for studying ancient Chinese horse riding and the raising of animals. It also helps us learn about animal remains and the history of caring for sick animals.
9. When were the horse writings on bamboo strips first created?
A. About 1, 000 years ago. B. During the Warring States Period.
C. In the Han Dynasty. D. Around the Tang Dynasty.
10. Why were horse riding skills important at that time?
A. Horses were used only for travel. B. People rode horses mainly for fun.
C. Chariot fighting needed skilled riders. D. Horses were rare and expensive.
11. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A. Horses helped form early Chinese writing.
B. Horses played many important roles in ancient China.
C. Horses were difficult to raise in ancient society.
D. Horses were used only for cultural exchange.
12. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How ancient Chinese cared for sick animals. B. Why bamboo strips were used for writing.
C. A discovery that helps study ancient horse culture. D. The development of Chinese farming skills.
D.
About one hundred years ago, on October 10, 1925, the Forbidden City in Beijing threw open its golden gates to the public. It was no longer the secret world of emperors but became the Palace Museum. Anyone could walk through the halls where history was made. And today, it is the world’s most visited museum, attracting almost 20 million visitors every year.
Have you ever stepped inside the Palace Museum? Once you do, you will find yourself at the heart of one of the richest cultural collections on Earth. More than 1.8 million artefacts (文物) are displayed or stored there. Each item is like a quiet storyteller. They show visitors how people in China once lived, what they created, and what they believed in. As you gaze (凝视) at the porcelain (瓷器), dragon robes, and golden treasures, you won’t just admire them but begin to understand them: These are not just priceless artefacts; they are “threads” (线) tying you back to a culture that has thrived (繁荣) for over 5,000 years.
Beyond its treasures, the Palace Museum itself is a wonder. The former Forbidden City is the world’s largest standing wooden palace complex (建筑群). Its red walls, golden roofs, grand gates, and large courtyards show the beauty of balance and harmony—two concepts central to Chinese philosophy. Only by walking through its grounds can you truly appreciate (欣赏;领会) the thought and power behind its design.
The Palace Museum keeps reminding us why history must be kept alive. Each part of it and each of its artefacts carries a message across time. They invite us to listen, learn, and connect with a culture that has shaped human history. The museum has amazed countless visitors, and it’s still calling us to step through its gates and discover more about China’s past.

A Special Birthday Gift
It was my 14th birthday. I had hoped for a new smartphone, but my parents gave me something different—a piggy bank and a notebook. At first, I felt disappointed. “What’s this?” I asked. My father smiled and said, “This is a start to your financial journey. We want you to learn how to manage money.”
He explained that I should put all my pocket money into the piggy bank and write down every expense in the notebook. “This way, you’ll know where your money goes,” he said. My mother added, “If you save 20 yuan every week, by the end of the year, you’ll have enough to buy the smartphone you want.”
I decided to try. Every week, I saved 20 yuan from my 50 yuan pocket money. I wrote down everything I bought: a pen for 3 yuan, a snack for 2 yuan, and so on. After three months, I had saved 240 yuan. I felt a sense of achievement. I also found that I didn’t waste money on unnecessary things anymore.
On the last day of the year, I counted my money: 960 yuan! It was almost enough for the smartphone. My parents were very proud of me. They matched my savings with an extra 40 yuan, and I finally bought my dream phone. But more importantly, I learned the value of saving and managing money. Now, I still keep a spending diary and make a budget every month.

Everyone may meet difficulties in growth. Last year, I was poor at spoken English and feared speaking before the whole class. I felt nervous and lost confidence whenever I needed to make speeches.
To make a change, I took action right away. I read English aloud each morning to correct my pronunciation. I asked my English teacher for advice and joined the English club to practice conversations with classmates. Gradually, I became brave and confident.
Now I dare to speak in public. I’ve learned nothing is too hard with continuous efforts. Difficulties can help us grow and become stronger.
