Jane Goodall, whose groundbreaking studies of wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩) made her a household name, passed away at the age of 91. Her work showed the striking similarities between humans and chimpanzees, reshaping our understanding of both species.
Born in London in 1934, she developed a deep love for wildlife and a longing to go to Africa. However, with little money, she attended secretarial college instead of university. In 1960, after working as a waitress to save for a trip to Kenya, she met the paleontologist (古生物学家) Louis Leakey, who immediately recognized her passion for animals and hired her as his secretary. Despite her lack of formal scientific training, Leakey recommended sending her to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to study chimpanzees.
The government, worried about a young woman camping in the forests by herself, ordered Jane to find a partner. So she brought along her mom. They both got malaria, a deadly infectious disease, and the chimps kept running away, but Goodall did not give up. She offered them bananas, and approached them quietly and respectfully.
In just a few months, Goodall made a major discovery. Chimps could make and use tools — as she learned by watching a chimp she’d named David Greybeard. He removed leaves from a thin stick, and then used it to fish termites (白蚁) out of their home. Louis Leakey said, “Well, it’s always been considered that man is the only tool-making animal. So we now have to redefine tool, redefine man, or include chimpanzees with humans.”
In 1986, Goodall’s life changed. When she attended a conference in Chicago and learned how chimps were being used in medical experiments, Goodall became an activist, traveling almost nonstop to give talks.
Sometimes people would ask her, “Which do you like better, chimps or people?” She’d say, “Well, it depends. Chimps are so like us that I like some people much more than some chimps and some chimps much more than some people.”
24. What was the most important reason for Leakey’s decision to recommend Goodall?
A. Her secretarial skills. B. Her scientific interest.
C. Her fondness for wildlife. D. Her education background.
25. What do we know about Goodall’s experience in Gombe?
A. Her mother helped lessen her loneliness.
B. She overcame difficulties with patience.
C. She obtained chimpanzees’ trust upon arrival.
D. The government regretted sending her there.
26. What does Louis Leakey suggest about Jane’s discovery?
A. It shows chimps’ playful nature. B. It changes human’s development.
C. It confirms chimps’ learning abilities. D. It challenges human’s uniqueness.
27. Which of the following can best describe Goodall?
A. Pioneering and loving. B. Creative and responsible.
C. Honest and patient. D. Adventurous and confident.
C
In his 1936 work How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie wrote: “I have got to the point that there is only one way to get the best of an argument, and that is to avoid it.” This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives — and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place.
Camegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is how we often think of them. Like physical fights, verbal (言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions — like, say, tennis matches. Pairs of competitors hit the ball back and forth (来回反复) until one winner comes out from all who entered. Everybody else loses. This kind of thinking explains why so many people try to avoid arguments.
However, there are ways to win an argument every time. When you state your position, formulate (阐述) an argument for what you claim and honestly ask yourself whether your argument is any good. When you talk with someone who takes a stand, ask them to give you a reason for their view and spell out their argument fully. Judge its strength and weakness. Raise objections and listen carefully to their replies. This method will require effort, but practice will make you better at it.
These tools can help you win every argument — not in the unhelpful sense of beating your competitors but in the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them. If we change our view of arguments — from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all earn respect and understanding from each other — then we change the very nature of what it means to “win” an argument.
28. What is the author’s attitude toward Carnegie’s understanding of argument?
A. Disagreeable. B. Supportive. C. Interested. D. Uncertain.
29. Why do many people try to avoid arguments?
A. They fear being ignored. B. They may feel bad even if they win.
C. They lack debating skills. D. They are not confident in themselves.
30. What does the underlined phrase “spell out” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Protect. B. Judge. C. Explain. D. Repeat.
31. What is the key to “winning” an argument according to the author?
A. Proper manners. B. Firm supporting evidence.
C. Way of thinking. D. Understanding both sides.
D
The effects of high altitude (海拔) on the human body could protect against obesity (肥胖), according to a study of more than 4 million children across Colombia. The findings support the theory that low oxygen levels drive increased energy consumption, though prior evidence comes mainly from adults.
To understand the potential impact on children, Lizcano Losada at the University of La Sabana analysed data on 4.16 million children aged up to 5 years old from 1123 cities. The children were separated into four groups relating to the height above sea level at which they lived: up to 1000 metres, 1001 to 2000 metres, 2001 to 3000 metres or above 3000 metres.
In the two lower-altitude regions, around 80 out of every 10,000 children had obesity. However, at altitudes of 2001 to 3000 metres, the prevalence (发生率) of obesity fell to 40 in 10,000. At altitudes above 3000 metres, the prevalence was higher again: 86 out of 10,000. However, the team says this may be a statistical accident, as this data set included fewer cities and children than the other three altitude ranges.
“That’s a fair comment,” says David Stensel at Loughborough University. But he also emphasises the study is observational, so it doesn’t prove high altitude prevents obesity. “They’ve tried to make sure they’ve adjusted for the other potential influencing factors,” he says. These include measures of poverty and low income. But “you can’t account for everything”, says Stensel. Assuming high altitude really does make obesity less likely, Stensel says it isn’t clear how this knowledge could be of practical use in reducing the condition.
However, Losada argues the findings support the creation of geographically tailored public health strategies. He suggests further studies are needed to better understand the biological pathways linking altitude to childhood obesity, which could lead to more precise health advice for different regions.
32. What was the analysis in Losada’s study mainly based on?
A. Grouped data. B. Sample size.
C. Children’s age. D. City type.
33. What is the team’s view on the unexpected result of the study?
A. It’s a definite trend.
B. It’s a chance occurrence.
C. It’s a misleading signal.
D. It’s a measurement error.
34. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning Stensel in paragraph 4?
A. The importance of health knowledge.
B. The necessity of actionable strategies.
C. The limitation of the research method.
D. The complexity of the influencing factors.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Altitude’s Role in Childhood Weight
B. Less Oxygen, Healthier Children?
C. A New Approach to Fighting Obesity
D. Why the Weight Gap in Colombia?
We often stop noticing things we’ve grown used to, as a side effect of our brains protecting us from sensory overload. Many of us have had the experience of going through daily information without truly noticing familiar content. Our minds move past these moments not because we lack care, but because of a useful characteristic developed over time called habituation (习惯化). ____36____
This reduced sensitivity serves an important purpose. Without this mental shortcut, we would be continuously disturbed by endless background signals and eventually feel worried about too many things around us. For instance, while working in a café, we may fail to notice background music or unchanging lighting until we pay attention to them on purpose. Our brains quietly ignore unchanging signals to free up resources. ____37____ The brains of unborn babies can already habituate to repeated light and sound stimuli (刺激), learning to ignore familiar signals and pay more attention to new changes.
Habituation brings many hidden benefits. It helps people adapt to continuous sadness or long-term discomfort, making tough situations more bearable. ____38____ When the excitement of a new job decreases, this falling satisfaction pushes people to seek growth and explore new possibilities.
____39____ Habituation may make us ignore warning signs like ongoing pain, putting off medical treatment. People may gradually get used to unsuitable or harmful behavior, accepting things that should never be put up with.
Fortunately, there are practical ways to reverse (逆转) habituation and recover our sensitivity. ____40____ Changing daily routes, moving things around in your room or taking different sitting positions can bring fresh stimulation. These tiny changes keep our brains out of fixed patterns and help us stay sharp.
A. It also drives personal progress.
B. Small changes in daily life can refresh our senses.
C. It makes repeated experiences less noticeable over time.
D. Without habituation, we would lose our ability to focus.
E. So overcoming negative habituation is especially pressing.
F. Remarkably, this adaptive ability exists even before birth.
G. However, this brain process that works by itself can also hold us back.

Ms. Carter’s classroom was always warm, even in winter. The walls were covered with student essays and old world maps. Jamie, a 14-year-old boy, sat in the back row, his head down and eyes fixed on his worn shoes. He hadn’t turned in his homework for several days.
“Stay after class, Jamie,” Ms. Carter said softly one December afternoon. She was not angry, just worried. “I know you’re able,” she said, pushing his blank notebook across the desk. “But you’ve missed every deadline. Is there anything wrong?”
Jamie, who had trouble expressing himself, said nothing and kept silent. Outside, raindrops tapped the windows lightly.
The next day, Ms. Carter drove to Jamie’s home after school. When she knocked on the half-open door, she heard a baby crying. Jamie answered, looking surprised and nervous. A baby girl was on his back, and an oxygen machine hummed beside a sofa where his weak mother lay asleep.
“My mom has pneumonia (肺炎),” Jamie explained quietly, standing in the doorway. “I have to take care of my sister after school. The daycare kicked her out because Mom couldn’t pay. She can’t go to work now.”
Ms. Carter felt sad. She saw microwave meals on the table and a photo of Jamie smiling with his mother on the fridge.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked.
“You’d think I’m lying,” he said, his voice shaking. “But I’ll catch up on my study, I promise.”
That evening, Ms. Carter contacted a local charity and told them about Jamie’s family. The charity agreed to help at once. The next day, the charity’s head brought an envelope of money to the school, which could cover the daycare expenses for at least one month.

M: I’ll continue to give away used and donated books to others at no cost. We know that reading ability among students in the Philippines remains low. I’d like to do my bit to promote education through books.
W: That’s really great. Thank you so much.

W: James, why didn’t you go to Nancy’s party last night?
M: I didn’t feel quite well then, so I just watched some news on the Internet at home.
W: Is there any news that impressed you?
M: Yes. There was some concerning news about the narwhals.
W: I know the marine animals. They are strange-looking. A narwhal is a whale which has a long tusk coming out of its head. That’s how it got its nickname, the unicorn of the sea. They live in the Arctic Ocean. Is there anything wrong with them?
M: Yes. Experts say some populations of narwhals could be extinct in the near future, and it’s all because of noise pollution. Narwhals use sound to find food and navigate their surroundings. However, the increase in human marine activities, as well as climate change, has resulted in the Arctic Ocean becoming noisier. So it’s more difficult for narwhals to rely on sound.
W: That’s really bad.
M: In fact, man-made noise is extremely difficult for these animals to adapt to. There was a study published in the journal Science Advances. It recorded the reactions of narwhals to the noises from a large ship. On hearing these sounds, they stopped sending out signals they use for finding food underwater. This means man-made noise could wake up the creature’s “threat button”.
W: So what can we do?
M: Charlotte Findlay, a research fellow at Aarhus University, says, “Noise is actually quite easy to solve. We need to either turn it off or turn it down.”

C 25. B 26. D 27. A

A 29. B 30. C 31. D

根据第一段“This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives — and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place.(对争论的这种反感很常见,但它源于一种对争论的误解,这种误解给我们的个人和社会生活带来了问题——在很多方面,也根本未能抓住争论本身的核心要义)”可知,作者对于Carnegie对争论的看法持批判态度。
根据第二段中“Like physical fights, verbal (言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions — like, say, tennis matches.(和身体上的打斗一样,言语上的打斗也会让双方流血。即使你赢了,你最终也不会变得更好。如果争论只是一场比赛,比如网球比赛,你也会感觉很糟糕)”可知, 很多人尽量避免争论,是因为即使赢了他们也感觉很糟糕。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线短语所在句“ask them to give you a reason for their view”可知,让他们为自己的观点提供依据,即让他们充分阐明他们的观点,spell out意为“解释明白,讲清楚”。

A 33. B 34. C 35. A

根据第三段中的“At altitudes above 3000 metres, the prevalence was higher again: 86 out of 10,000. However, the team says this may be a statistical accident, as this data set included fewer cities and children than the other three altitude ranges. (在海拔3000米以上的地区,肥胖发生率又有所上升,达到万分之八十六。然而,研究团队表示这可能是一个统计偶然,因为该数据集包含的城市和儿童数量少于其他三个海拔区间。)”可知,研究团队认为这个意外结果是偶然发生的。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“But he also emphasises the study is observational, so it doesn’t prove high altitude prevents obesity. (但他也强调,这项研究是观察性的,因此并不能证明高海拔可以预防肥胖。)”以及“But “you can’t account for everything”, says Stensel. (但是“你不可能考虑到所有因素”,斯滕塞说。)”可知,作者提及斯滕塞尔是为了说明该研究方法存在局限性。故选C项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第一段中的“The effects of high altitude (海拔) on the human body could protect against obesity (肥胖), according to a study of more than 4 million children across Colombia. (一项针对哥伦比亚400多万名儿童开展的研究显示,高海拔对人体产生的影响或可预防肥胖。)”可知,文章围绕一项关于不同海拔高度与儿童肥胖发生率关系的研究展开,介绍了研究结果、相关质疑以及后续研究建议,核心是探讨海拔对儿童体重的影响。A项“海拔对儿童体重的影响”概括文章主旨,可以作为最佳标题。故选A项。
C 37. F 38. A 39. G 40. B
上文“Our minds move past these moments not because we lack care, but because of a useful characteristic developed over time called habituation (习惯化).(我们的大脑之所以能忽略这些时刻,并非因为我们缺乏关注,而是因为一种随时间推移形成的实用特性——习惯化)”引入“habituation”这个新概念,C项“它会让重复的体验随着时间推移变得不那么容易被注意到”是对习惯化核心定义的补充解释,承接上文对该特性的描述。
下文“The brains of unborn babies can already habituate to repeated light and sound stimuli (刺激), learning to ignore familiar signals and pay more attention to new changes.(未出生的婴儿的大脑已经能够对重复的光和声音刺激产生习惯化,学会忽略熟悉的信号,并更多关注新的变化)”提到未出生的婴儿的大脑已经能对重复刺激产生习惯化,F项“值得注意的是,这种适应能力甚至在出生前就存在”恰好引出后文胎儿阶段的相关例证,逻辑衔接紧密。
根据下文“Habituation may make us ignore warning signs like ongoing pain, putting off medical treatment. People may gradually get used to unsuitable or harmful behavior, accepting things that should never be put up with.(习惯化可能导致我们忽视持续的疼痛等警示信号,延误就医。

Recently, our class has heatedly debated whether money is the most important thing in life. Opinions are divided.
Some think money is the most important, as it covers daily needs like food and housing, and brings comfort. Others argue money isn’t everything. It can’t buy health, love, or happiness. True joy comes from relationships and personal growth.

After school , Jamie hurried home and handed the envelope to his mother.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ms. Carter called Jamie to the office. Sunlight fell on the envelope as she pushed it toward him. “This will help your family through hard times,” she said, her eyes filled with care and hope. Jamie’s fingertips touched the envelope, tears welling up. He was too moved to speak, only whispering “Thank you, Ms. Carter”. Never feeling such warmth before, he bit his lip to hold back tears. Ms. Carter patted his shoulder, encouraging him to focus on study, and Jamie nodded firmly with determination.
After school, Jamie hurried home and handed the envelope to his mother. Her hands trembled as she held it, tears rolling down her cheeks. With the money, they bought medicine for his mother and sent the baby to daycare. Gradually, his mother got better day by day. That night, Jamie finished his homework carefully for the first time in weeks, his heart full of gratitude. When he handed his homework to Ms. Carter the next day, the classroom was filled with warm light, which not only brought hope to Jamie’s family but also taught him the power of kindness.
