Beneath the bright lights of campus stages, Zhang Xueling, an Indonesian student at South China University of Technology, has truly turned into an excellent storyteller of Chinese culture.
Born in Indonesia to a family with Fujian roots, she received a poetic Chinese name. At five, her mother signed her up for Chinese dance and Kong fu. Back then, she failed to focus on the beauty behind them. To her young mind, it felt like a heavy pressure rather than a joy — simply a tiring and boring task. She almost gave up. However, her respect for her family's wish pushed her forward.
Then, on a trip to ancient Luoyang, an unforgettable moment arrived. She was shocked to see crowds of young people walking through the streets in attractive Hanfu. The atmosphere was so powerful that it awakened her curiosity about Chinese culture. In that flash, she understood: tradition is not dead — it remains alive and breathing.
“How amazing it would be to wear Hanfu!”
Dressed in Tang-style Hanfu with full classical makeup, she walked through Yingtian Gate and felt as if she had stepped back a thousand years. It was magical: Chinese culture was not simply for museums, but for living.
She entered the 5th “Stories of China Retold in English” competition, naming her speech “Hanfu, a Walking History Book.” She didn’t just speak; she also taught herself the “Old Tales of Luoyang” dance. Backstage, her heart beat fast. “What if I make a mistake on stage?” But the moment she began to move, all her worry disappeared. Her graceful moves, paired with the beautiful Hanfu, completely won the crowd and the judges.
With the Grand Prize and the title “Star of the Stage”, Zhang Xueling proved that with true passion, anyone can bridge cultures and shine.
24. What can we learn about Zhang Xueling in her childhood?
A. She learned Kong fu for fun. B. She was interested in poems.
C. She met Chinese culture early. D. She had a gift for Chinese dance.
25. What awakened Zhang Xueling's curiosity in Luoyang?
A. The magical works of museums. B. The atmosphere of Hanfu lovers.
C. The long history of Yingtian Gate. D. The classical makeup of local girls.
26. What made Zhang Xueling win the competition?
A. Her family's support and wish. B. Her experience of wearing Hanfu.
C. Her nice speech and graceful dance. D. Her deep love for ancient Luoyang.
27. What can be concluded from Zhang Xueling's story?
A. A positive mind leads to success.
B. Traditional culture should be updated.
C. True passion connects different cultures.
D. Mistakes can be reduced through practice.

In order to achieve in math, science, English, history, geography, and other subjects, reading skills must be developed when the students are young. Students cannot struggle with word recognition when they should be reading quickly for understanding of a text.
Since reading is very important to success in school, parents can and should play a role in helping their children become interested in reading and in encouraging their growth in reading skills.
Research shows that children learn about reading before they enter school. In fact, they learn in the best way — through observation. Young children, for example, see people around them reading newspapers, books, maps, and signs.
Parents can do a lot to cultivate an understanding of print by talking with their preschoolers about signs in their environment and by letting their children know they enjoy reading themselves. When reading to your preschooler, you should run your index finger under the line of print. This process is simple and helps children begin to notice words and that words have meaning. They also develop habits of reading.
In the early elementary years, from first through third grades, children continue learning how to read. It is a complex process, difficult for some and easy for others. Care must be taken during these early years not to put too much stress on the learningtoread process.
Reading for pleasure and information develops reading interests and offers children the chance to practise their reading skills in meaningful ways. Parents of preschoolers should provide reading materials in the home that arouse curiosity or extend their children's natural interest in the world around them.
By encouraging reading in free time, parents take the most important step in improving their children's reading development.
28. What can we conclude from the passage?
A. It is important to develop children's reading ability.
B. Parents should care for their children's studies.
C. It is common for students to ignore their reading habit.
D. Schools should pay more attention to children's reading.
29. What should parents do to help their children build up their reading ability?
A. They should encourage their children to read every day.
B. They should teach their children to read as quickly as possible.
C. They should take great interest in reading by themselves.
D. They should provide financial support for their children.
30. What does the underlined word “cultivate” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Prevent. B. Develop.
C. Discuss. D. Practise.
31. What should a parent NOT do when teaching his child?
A. Find proper reading materials.
B. Encourage his child to read more at home.
C. Help develop his child's interests.
D. Stress the learning to read process more.

Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t hop out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay until — well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling story is more than just a metaphor (隐喻).
Climate change is becoming one of the biggest threats to frogs and other amphibians, according to a major study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the main reason why more than 100 amphibian species were nearly dying out.
The spread of disease among frogs and the destruction of their habitats have long been recognized as reasons why many amphibians are decreasing. But this new study establishes climate change as a major risk for amphibians around the world, too. The soft-skinned animals lack the fur and feathers to help adjust (调节) their temperature in this hotter and drier world.
Less attention is paid to frogs and other amphibians compared to more well-known groups like birds. But losing amphibians would be serious because they often act as a key link in the food web of ecosystems, wolfing insects down and, in turn, being eaten by larger predators (捕食者). “Without those amphibians to fill that role, we will see the breakdown of this food web,” said Neam, who works for an Austin-based environmental group.
Luckily, habitat protection and other measures have been taken to help recover more than five dozen amphibians from Costa Rica to Malaysia. “It’s not all bad news,” said Jennifer Luedtke, an amphibian group leader with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “But we really must build on this improvement and significantly increase the amphibian conservation.”
32. How is the topic introduced?
A. By sharing a story. B. By raising a question.
C. By explaining ideas. D. By listing facts.
33. What is the main reason for the decrease of amphibians according to the new study?
A. The loss of habitats. B. The lack of feathers.
C. The spread of disease. D. The rise of temperature.
34. What will happen if the number of amphibians decreases?
A. Wolves will depend more on insects. B. Predators will be the key role of the web.
C. The ecosystem will become more diverse. D. The food chain will be destroyed.
35. How does Luedtke feel about the future of amphibians?
A. Uncertain. B. Curious. C. Hopeful. D. Worried.

M: I think it’s cultural. The British language tends to be more polite.
W: I suppose that must be the style I’ve been learning then. Although my teacher is from New York, he always says, “Let’s have a short break.”

M: You did make progress this time, especially in reading and writing parts.
W: But I’m still dissatisfied with my spoken English. It’s my biggest problem.
M: Cheer up. Let me help you find the right way to learn English. When you’re studying a language, the keyword is patience. It’s of the greatest importance, because nobody can master a language all at once.
W: Oh, yeah. But what am I supposed to do? Find some foreign friends or go abroad to learn it?
M: Not exactly. You can just make full use of every morning to practice English.
W: Should I get up earlier every day?
M: You don’t have to do so. Actually, there are indeed many chances in the morning that you can grasp to learn English. For example, you can listen to English news while you are dressing and washing. At the same time, you can imitate and speak English loudly. You need to take every opportunity to learn.
W: Practice makes perfect, right?
M: You said it.

25. What awakened Zhang Xueling's curiosity in Luoyang?
A. The magical works of museums. B. The atmosphere of Hanfu lovers.

A. Her family's support and wish. B. Her experience of wearing Hanfu.
C. Her nice speech and graceful dance. D. Her deep love for ancient Luoyang.

【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. D

A. Uncertain. B. Curious. C. Hopeful. D. Worried.
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. D 35. C
