Last summer, I went to France for a holiday. I was so excited but also a little nervous because my French was not good.
One hot afternoon, after exploring the city, I felt really tired. I wanted to tell my French friend, Claire, “I am a little tired.” I carefully said the words I’d learned: “Je suis un pue fatigue.”
But Claire burst out laughing. My face felt hot. What had I done wrong? Claire explained, “In French, there are words that sound similar but have very different meanings. ‘peu’ means ‘a little,’ but if you pronounce it differently, it can sound like ‘pue’, which means ‘stinks’ — like something smells bad. So, instead of saying you needed a rest, it sounded like you were saying you smelled bad and were tired”
This awkward (尴尬的) moment was a real eye-opener for me. It made me realize just how daunting pronunciation can be in a foreign language. Even small differences in pronunciation can completely change the meaning of what you’re trying to say. The same is true in English, for example, “ship” (a large boat) and “sheep” (a woolly animal) sound very similar, but they mean totally different things.
Now, I pay extra attention to how words sound and what they mean. And if I mix them up again? I’ll just laugh along. After all, laughing is part of learning — even if it’s a bit stinky sometimes.
4. Why was the author nervous about his holiday in France?
A. He was poor at French. B. He never went abroad.
C. He had no friends there. D. He was in short of money.
5. What awkward moment did the author meet?
A. He got a wrong person. B. He made a pronunciation mistake.
C. He was tricked by the locals. D. He spelt a word incorrectly.
6. What does the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Easy. B. Natural. C. Difficult. D. Clear.
7. How did the author’s experience in France affect him?
A. He smelled bad and was tired.
B. He hated learning foreign languages.
C. He no longer considered Claire as a friend.
D. He became open to mistakes in language learning.

Nowadays, more teenagers take exercise to keep healthy. However, many of them do not know how to work out properly. Some students push themselves too hard to get quick results, while others seldom warm up before sports. These wrong habits may bring unexpected physical problems.
Warming-up is the first step of safe exercise. It slowly raises your body temperature and makes your muscles ready for movement. Without a proper warm-up, you are much more likely to pull a muscle or hurt your joints. A good warm-up does not need to be long. 5 to 10 minutes of light movements like jogging or stretching is enough.
Besides warm-ups, you should listen to your own body. Feeling tired during exercise is normal. But sharp pain is a warning sign. If your knees or ankles hurt badly, stop exercising at once. Never keep training through pain. Some teenagers believe “no pain, no gain”. This old saying does not fit teenage bodies. Growing bones and muscles are easier to get hurt.
What’s more, rest is also part of fitness training. Your body gets stronger during rest, not while you are exercising. It is wise to leave one or two rest days every week. You can choose easy activities such as walking on rest days instead of hard training. Balancing exercise and rest helps teenagers stay active without injury.
8. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. The importance of warming up before exercise.
B. Different kinds of sports for teenagers.
C. How to choose suitable sports clothes.
D. The common injuries in team sports.
9. What does the underlined phrase “pull a muscle” mean?
A. strengthen your muscle
B. hurt your muscle
C. relax your muscle
D. build your muscle
10. What should teenagers do when they feel sharp pain during exercise?
A. Keep exercising and hold on.
B. Stop the exercise right away.
C. Take medicine and continue training.
D. Have a long run to reduce pain.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Teenagers should exercise every single day without rest.
B. Walking is harder and tiring than all other sports.
C. Proper rest plays an important role in fitness.
D. Our bodies become stronger when we are exercising.
D
“If I could talk to the animals, just imagine it, chatting to a chimp (黑猩猩) in its language,” sang the actor Rex Harrison in the 1967 movie Doctor Dolittle. “Imagine talking to a tiger, chatting to a lion. What a great achievement that would be!” Talking to animals may have seemed like a dream in the 1960s, but it may soon become possible thanks to AI (人工智能).
The sounds that animals make to communicate with each other have rules that other members of their species understand, but these rules are hard for humans to identify. However, AI is very good at finding rules if it is given enough data. And because AI can sort through millions of sounds to find such rules, many scientists believe AI may soon help us understand what animals are saying.
Scientists have a project called CETI. They use AI to study the sounds of sperm whale (抹香鲸). They already know that these whales use clicks to identify each other, and that groups of whales even have their own special sounds. The CETI researchers have trained a machine language program on a database of whale sounds, and they are now trying to match the sounds the AI has identified with whale behavior. They believe they will be able to translate the language of sperm whales as soon as 2026.
Some people believe that understanding the language of animals will change how we see our relationship with the natural world, and may encourage greater protection efforts. But in the meantime, it seems some animals might already want to talk to us! Some whales have been recorded blowing large bubble (气泡) rings in water during meeting with humans. And a study of these meetings suggests that the whales may be trying to use the bubbles to communicate with us!
12. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A. By telling a historic story. B. By providing research results.
C. By explaining animal languages. D. By using a movie song.
13. Why is AI helpful for people to understand animal sounds?
A. It can create new animal languages. B. It can find rules from many sounds.
C. It can directly translate animal languages. D. It can copy the sounds made by animals.
14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Whales mainly use bubbles to communicate.
B. People can surely live in harmony with animals.
C. Understanding animal languages may protect nature.
D. More projects will be carried out to study animal sounds.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. AI May Soon Help Us Talk to Animals
B. How Whales Communicate with Humans
C. How We Protect Animals Through Technology
D. CETI Has Uncovered the Mystery of Whale Sounds

Last summer, I joined a two-week long art camp. At first, I was nervous as I didn’t know anyone there. Among the students, there was a girl named Maya. She was always surrounded by a group of friends, chatting and laughing loudly. I was too shy to approach her.
One day during a painting class, I was struggling with my brushwork. Maya happened to pass by and noticed my trouble. She pulled up a chair beside me and patiently showed me some painting techniques. Her kind smile and warm words made me feel at ease immediately. From then on, we became good friends. We spent every day at the camp together, sharing our dreams and secrets.
As the end of the art camp approached, everyone was busy preparing for the final exhibition. Maya and I decided to create a joint painting that combined our different styles. However, just two days before the exhibition, a huge argument broke out between us. We had different ideas about how to complete the painting and neither of us was willing to compromise (妥协). We ended up storming off in anger, leaving the half-finished painting on the painting stand.
That night, I lay in bed, tossing and turning (辗转反侧). I kept thinking about our friendship and how stupid our argument was. I realized that friendship was more important than winning an argument.

Congratulations on entering high school! I’m glad you want to improve your English. Here are some suggestions.
First, try to read English aloud every morning. It helps you develop a good sense of the language and improves your pronunciation. Second, focus on vocabulary building. Make notes of new words and review them regularly. Third, read more English passages and practice writing short passages in your spare time. This will help you put what you have learned into use.
I hope these tips are helpful. I hold the belief that you will make great progress!

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】Paragraph 1:
The next morning, I decided to apologize to Maya. With a pounding heart, I walked towards the studio where she was. When I opened the door, I saw Maya sitting in front of our unfinished painting, looking sad. Her eyes were red as if she had been crying. Seeing me, she stood up nervously. Before she could say anything, I blurted out, “Maya, I’m so sorry about yesterday. Our friendship means everything to me, and I don’t want a silly argument to ruin it.”
Paragraph 2:
Tears filled Maya’s eyes as she rushed towards me and gave me a big hug. “I’m sorry too,” she sobbed. “I was just being stubborn. Our friendship is far more precious than any painting.” We both laughed through our tears. Then, side by side, we sat down and started working on the painting again. This time, we listened to each other’s ideas, compromised, and added our unique touches. When the exhibition opened, our painting received high praise. But more importantly, our friendship became even stronger, and we knew that true friendship could overcome any obstacle.
