Exhibitions Spotlight: Land and Nature
Each month, we bring you a selection of UK exhibitions on similar themes. This month we look at how museums and galleries are drawing attention to the legacies of Land Art and the way nature impacts on art.
Emerging in the 1960s and 1970s, Land Art invites artists to create work situated within the landscape and use natural materials. Originating in America, it later became popular in Britain. Artists like Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy inspire people to reconsider human-nature relations. Today, many artists draw inspiration from nature to reflect on issues such as pollution, climate change and land use.
Brief introductions
Andy Goldsworthy | Fifty Years is the artist’s largest indoor display, with more than 200 works. Goldsworthy is good at using natural materials such as clay, leaves and stones. Visitors can view records of Goldsworthy’s 50-year creative career in the downstairs galleries.
Millet: Life on the Land is held to mark the 150th anniversary of French artist Jean-François Millet’s death. It features his realistic and poetic paintings of countryside labourers, such as farmers and shepherds (牧羊人).
After Nature is set against the background of environmental crisis. It brings together artists using natural materials and exploring the complex relationship between art and technology.

A school resource officer turned a failed summer field trip into an unforgettable memory for over 140 poor middle school students in Phoenix.
When the funding for the end-of-summer movie trip was unexpectedly cancelled, program organizer Katie Jenkins was at a loss. She turned to Officer Sean Reavie for help. Without hesitation, Reavie paid out of his own pocket to rent a whole movie theatre for 144 seventh and eighth graders from Greenway Middle School’s after-school program. He also covered snacks including popcorn, candies and drinks for the private screening of Toy Story 5. For most kids, this was their very first time stepping into a movie theatre.
The whole rental cost less than $2,000, yet the experience meant far more to these teenagers. Reavie said he would spare more money if needed, for he believed adults must never break promises made to children. Greenway is a Title I school, where most students come from financially disadvantaged families. Many have no private cars, and their parents hold several low-paying jobs to make ends meet. Half of these kids have never visited a water park, let alone travelled across the nearby highway.
Reavie has kept helping kids with his own money year after year. Last summer, he spent over $3,000 taking students to a local water park. Inspired by children’s fondness for superheroes. he also founded a charity called Put On The Cape: A Foundation For Hope, aiming to bring warmth to more troubled youngsters.
Before the movie rolled, Reavie shared a heartfelt wish with all the kids: grow up and pay it forward. He expected nothing material in return, hoping this single act of generosity would plant seeds of kindness that would bloom for years to come.
4. Why did Jenkins ask Reavie for help?
A. She lost the tickets for the movie trip. B. She lacked money for the planned trip.
C. The snacks prepared were far from enough. D. The ticket prices had risen beyond the budget.
5. Why did the author mention students’ family backgrounds in paragraph 3?
A. To illustrate the backwardness of local education.
B. To explain the expenses a family covered for the trip.
C. To highlight the great value of the experience for kids.
D. To praise Reavie for what he had done for the school.
6. Which of the following can best describe Reavie?
A. Generous and warm-hearted. B. Devoted and patient.
C. Modest and open-minded. D. Independent and reliable.
7. What was Reavie’s expectation for the kids?
A. To hold on to their dreams. B. To treasure every moment in life.
C. To seek personal material rewards. D. To pass on kindness to more people.

A study conducted in Austria has revealed that listening to music you dislike might actually increase your desire for sugary foods, even when your overall appetite drops.
The findings, published in Appetite, suggest that disliked music triggers a form of compensatory (补偿的) eating — a psychological mechanism where the brain seeks high-reward comfort foods to reduce negative emotions.
The research team, led by Jonas Potthoff and Anne Schienle, divided 106 participants into three groups: one listened to self-selected liked music, another listened to disliked music, and a third experienced silence. Before and after the listening session, participants rated their general desire to eat and their emotional state. They were then presented with a buffet table displaying three high-sugar items, three low-sugar options, and three non-food objects. Using an eye tracker, the researchers recorded visual attention before allowing participants to eat freely.
The results were striking. After listening to disliked music, participants reported a lower general desire to eat — yet nearly 62% of them chose high-sugar sweets. In contrast, only 24% of those who listened to liked music favored sugary treats, with the majority preferring fruits. The no-music group fell in between, at 38%.
Interestingly, the disliked music did not significantly change visual attention toward food. Participants looked at food items longer than non-food items regardless of the musical condition, suggesting that the preference for sugar was driven by mood regulation rather than visual fixation. Because the unpleasant music undermined their emotional state, their brains in turn reached for comfort food rich in sugar as a coping mechanism-a classic example of emotional eating.
The authors concluded that music can influence food-related decision-making independently of attentional processes. While liked music may encourage healthier choices, disliked music increases the tendency to choose high-sugar foods even when the general appetite is depressed. These findings highlight music’s potential as a subtle (微妙的), non-caloric influence for promoting low-sugar eating behavior.
8. Why do people prefer sugary food after hearing unpleasant music?
A. Bad music makes people pay visual attention to sweets.
B. Sugary food can help relieve bad feelings.
C. People’s overall appetite grows stronger under negative feelings.
D. Sweet food can completely remove stress caused by music.
9. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. They surveyed people’s music preferences.
B. They compared subjects’ food choices across groups.
C. They analyzed different causes of bad moods.
D. They recorded people’s brain activity after eating.
10. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “undermined” in paragraph 5?
A. maintained. B. restored. C. improved. D. worsened.
11. What can we infer about the effect of music from the text?
A. Pleasant music may help people pick healthier food.
B. A music-free environment leads to the lowest sugar intake.
C. Bad music can totally make people lose interest in food.
D. Your visual preference for food is determined by music.

Have you ever witnessed the astonishing beauty of auroras (极光)? They are a gift from the heavens resulting from the interaction between the atmosphere and cosmic radiation (宇宙辐射).
However, in South Korea, a flight attendant, 53, died from cancer due to long exposure to intense cosmic radiation. According to South Korean authorities, the flight attendant flew about 1,022 annual hours throughout his career, with half of his flights spent crossing the regions in and around the North Pole, where cosmic radiation reaches extraordinarily high levels. Cosmic radiation, which comes from the sun and other stars in the galaxy, is constantly hitting Earth. Cosmic radiation can be divided into two types: solar radiation and galactic cosmic radiation. Solar radiation comprises charged particles (带电粒子) sent out by the sun, known as the solar wind, while galactic cosmic radiation comes from the remaining parts of supernovas (超新星).
Despite the continuous and powerful nature of cosmic radiation, we are generally protected from its worst effects. Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere provide protection from this radiation, with the magnetic field being strongest in tropical areas and weakest at the poles. Consequently, individuals living in higher latitudes (纬度), like Heilongjiang province, experience slightly more cosmic radiation than those in lower latitudes, such as Hainan province. Moreover, at higher altitudes, such as when passengers are flying on an airplane, the thinner atmosphere results in more intense exposure to cosmic radiation.
For astronauts and flight attendants on polar routes, lacking the protection offered by Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere exposes them to potential health risks. According to NASA, astronauts who spend six months in space encounter a radiation exposure roughly equal to undergoing 1,000 chest X-rays.
However, what makes cosmic radiation dangerous also holds treatment potential. Joseph, a particle physicist and his members found the high speed and energy of cosmic radiation have provided insights into treating tumors. Scientists can now artificially produce charged particles similar to cosmic radiation. Compared to conventional radiotherapy, charged particles can target tumors more effectively with less harm to the surrounding healthy tissues, according to Joseph
12. What can we know about cosmic radiation from paragraph 2?
A. It may lead to a higher risk of cancer.
B. It is composed of charged particles alone.
C. It generates harmful substances in the atmosphere.
D. It mainly results from the remaining parts of supernovas.
13. Who would be exposed to the most cosmic radiation?
A. Passengers flying on an airplane.
B. Residents living in Hainan province.
C. Workers exploring at the poles.
D. Researchers studying in the tropical areas.
14. Which statement does Joseph probably agree with?
A. Cosmic radiation can confirm the tumor types.
B. Cosmic radiation can cure cancer patients.
C. Cosmic radiotherapy does no harm to patients’ tissues.
D. Cosmic radiation is promising in the medical application.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Cosmic Radiation: Hidden Health Risks
B. Cosmic Radiation: Dangers for Air-workers
C. Cosmic Radiation: a Double-edged Sword
D. Cosmic Radiation: Hope for Medical Treatment

Sam never looked forward to his Saturday afternoon volunteer work at Oakwood Nursing Home. Though it was a necessary part of his high school graduation requirement, the place always smelled of old medicine and felt extremely dull. On every volunteer day, he only finished the basic tasks, passing out water and keeping to himself to avoid talking to the residents.
The resident he disliked most was Mr. Henderson, an irritable (易怒的) 80-year-old man who always stayed in his wheelchair at the far corner of the activity room. Mr. Henderson rarely smiled, never joined group events, and often complained about noisy teen volunteers. Sam always stayed away from him, annoyed by his endless complaints. However, he had noticed a small thing about the old man: he always kept an old, worn songbook on his knees. Sometimes he stroked its pages softly, his lips moving slightly as if murmuring familiar tunes. Sam guessed music might be the only comfort left for the lonely old man.
On a rainy and windy Saturday, the nursing home was ready for its monthly music activity. All the residents sat in the hall, eagerly waiting for the local volunteer band to show up. Yet at 2 p.m., activity coordinator (协调员) Sarah rushed in, looking very worried. “The band’s bus has broken down on the road,” she said in a slightly shaky voice. “They can’t come today.”
Sadness spread across the whole room. Some residents sighed loudly, while others lowered their heads in disappointment. Sarah looked around helplessly, until her eyes landed on an old piano covered with dust in the corner. “Is there anyone who can play the piano?” she asked the residents.
Sam suddenly froze. He had learned to play the piano at the age of six and was quite good at it. But he was terrified at the thought of playing before a crowd. He kept his eyes on the ground, hoping no one would notice him. But when he looked up at the audience, he changed his mind. For the first time, these people were not annoying strangers to him, but a group of elders who had eagerly hoped for a little happiness. He looked at Mr. Henderson, who no longer had a frown on his face, but just stared quietly at the unused piano.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At that point, Sam decided to do something.

C
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. A

It’s a great honor to share my views on music and painting. Music has its own charm. For example, whenever I feel stressed, a gentle melody can calm my nerves and lift my spirits. Painting also has unique power. Take Van Gogh’s Sunflowers for instance; its bright colors and bold lines always fill me with warmth and hope.
Though different in form, the two arts share something in common. Both express emotions that words cannot convey and connect people across cultures.
In short, art is a faithful friend in my spiritual life. It comforts me, inspires me and makes my world more colorful.

第二节(满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At that point, Sam decided to do something.

Much to people’s amazement, a rough, trembling voice started singing with the music.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Sample:
At that point, Sam decided to do something. Taking a deep breath, he raised his hand and offered to play the piano. He walked slowly to the dusty piano in the corner, wiped off the dirt on the keys and sat down gently. Though nervous at first, he soon relaxed himself. As his fingers touched the keys, beautiful and smooth melodies flowed out. The soft music instantly filled the entire hall. All the disappointed residents quieted down, focusing on the pleasant music and temporarily forgetting their disappointment.
Much to people’s amazement, a rough, trembling voice started singing with the music. It was the always grumpy Mr. Henderson. He opened his worn songbook and sang softly to the rhythm. His face was no longer full of complaints but covered with gentle calmness. Inspired by him, other residents joined in the singing one after another. Warmth and joy flooded the room. Sam finally let go of his prejudice against the old man. He realized that volunteering was never a boring task, but a warm encounter that brought happiness to others and helped him grow.
