Last month our school held a poster competition themed “Sketch Dream School, let your English shine” to encourage students to express their dreams of an ideal school through art and English.
I am glad that my work won first prize. In my poster, I draw a green campus full of trees, modern classrooms with smart boards, and happy students reading under the blue sky. There is also a big playground where everyone can play sports freely. I use bright colors to show how wonderful and peaceful my dream school is.
Taking part in this activity makes me realize that it not only shows our dreams but also strengthens our love for English and inspires us to work harder for a better future.

It was a note from one of his friends, offering him the answers. Anthony recognized the handwriting instantly -it was from his best friend, Mike. His heart pounded as he stared at the neatly written solutions. A part of him longed to copy them and avoid embarrassment, but memories of his teacher emphasizing honesty flashed through his mind. He glanced at Mike, who gave him an encouraging nod. However, Anthony recalled how his parents always told him that true success came from hard work, not shortcuts. The conflict within him grew fiercer.
With a deep breath, Anthony picked up the note and slowly tore it into pieces. He shook his head gently at Mike, silently refusing his help. Though his heart was still racing, he forced himself to focus on the paper in front of him. Relying only on what little he remembered, he answered the questions one by one as carefully as he could. When the test was over, a deep sense of relief washed over him, as if a heavy burden had been lifted from his shoulders. Later, Mike quietly apologized, and Anthony simply smiled, saying that real friendship never needed shortcuts. That day, Anthony realized that honesty and courage were far more valuable than any perfect grade.

W: Yeah, we had a great time. But I have to tell you the most amazing thing happened!
M: Really? What was that?
W: Well, I was playing on the beach and a huge wave came along and knocked my sunglasses into the water. Those were the expensive sunglasses Roy had given me for my birthday. Anyway, I had to have sunglasses, so I bought another cheap pair. The next day, I was lying on the beach, sunbathing. Then, suddenly, another huge wave completely covered me. I was so wet and…

M: Will you be able to find your way to class today without him?
W: Yeah. My sister is just over there paying for some shopping. I’m just waiting for her. When she gets back, she’ll help me to the classroom. She’s a big help, but I really miss my dog.
M: OK, then. I’ll see you later. Don’t forget today is the day of the test.
W: I won’t. I spent half of last night doing my homework in preparation for it.

W: Have you ever wished you were better at making a conversation? A great talker is someone who connects with people and makes them feel important. When they talk to you, they make you feel you’re the only person in the room. Becoming a good talker requires knowing three things: first, how to start a conversation; second, how to keep it going; and third, how to end it. Starting a conversation usually means coming up with an opening line or icebreaker. The best kind of icebreaker is one that makes people happy. Praise is always a good icebreaker and will usually be welcomed. The last thing people want to hear from a stranger is how noisy the party is, how terrible the food is, or how ugly the people are dressed. But don’t attempt to be the smartest person in the room. No one is expected to know everything. Anyway, the fact is, the best way to attract a person to keep a conversation with you is by being sincere and respectful, and letting them know that you are interested in talking to them.

One summer night, a boy felt himself lifted from bed by his father. Dazed with sleep, he saw stars flashing across the heavens. “What is it?” the child whispered. “Shooting stars. They come every year in August.” Decades have passed, but I remember that night still, because I was the fortunate boy whose father believed a new experience was more important than an unbroken night’s sleep.
Some parents like my father have the gift of opening doors for their children. This art of expanding a child’s mind brings the reward: the amazing moment when the spark bursts into a flame that will burn brightly on its own one day. At a Golf Association tournament, a ten-year-old girl played well. “How long have you been interested in golf?” someone asked. “I got it for my ninth birthday,” she said. “Your father gave you a set of equipment?” “No,” she said, “he gave me golf.”
I have a friend, a psychiatrist, who says there are two types of people: those who think of life as a blessing and those who think of it as a problem. The first type is enthusiastic and energetic. The other type is distrustful and self-centered. And he adds, “Tell me about your childhood and I can tell you which type you are likely to be.”
The real purpose, then, of trying to open doors for children is to build eager and outgoing attitudes, which is the most valuable gift we can pass on to the next generation. But why don’t we work harder at it? Probably because sometimes we don’t have the awareness or the selflessness or the energy. And yet, for those of us who care what becomes of our children, the challenge is always there but the opportunities also come repeatedly. Many years have passed since that night. And next year, when August comes with its shooting stars, my son will be seven.
24. Why does the author mention the girl in Paragraph 2?
A. To show parental impact on children’s passion.
B. To suggest hobbies always start from the small.
C. To highlight the importance of diverse experiences.
D. To prove true passion usually arises from the reward.
25. According to the passage, the art of opening doors for children is essentially about ______.
A. Setting an example for kids. B. Broadening the horizons of kids.
C. Providing attentive care for kids. D. Narrowing the possibilities of kids.
26. What will the author’s psychiatrist friend agree with?
A. Stability in upbringing builds confidence.
B. Parenting styles require professional guidance.
C. Childhood experiences determine adult happiness.
D. One’s personality is related to childhood experiences.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The author is always addicted to shooting stars.
B. It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to motivate kids.
C. The author will go to see shooting stars with his son.
D. It is impossible to unlock kids’ potential without eagerness.
C
In habitats across the planet, animals regularly drop everything to walk, fly or swim to a new place. Wildlife such as whales and geese learn migration paths by following their parents. Others, including small songbirds, gain the distance and direction of their migration within their genetic code. And some animals use a combination of genetics and culture to guide their migration.
Another group of migrators does not quite fit either model, and researchers have only recently started to figure out how they find their way. Take the Cory’s shearwater for example, an oceangoing sea bird that migrates over the Atlantic every year. The young do not migrate with their parents, so culture cannot explain their journeys. And the exact paths vary wildly from individual to individual, making genetics equally unlikely.
Cory’s shearwaters are long-lived, rarely producing young successfully before age nine. This leaves an opening for learning and practice to develop their migration patterns. Researchers call this the “exploration-refinement” (探索-精炼), and until now it has been hypothetical (假设的) because of difficulties in tracking migratory animals’ movements.
But a team of researchers has achieved this by attaching small GPS trackers to more than 150 birds aged four to nine. They found that younger birds traveled longer distances, for longer periods, and had more diverse paths than older birds. “We finally have evidence of the ‘exploration-refinement’ for migratory birds,” says Letizia Campioni, who led the study. Younger Cory’s shearwaters are able to fly just as fast as the adults — but they do not, suggesting that the young do more exploring, which gradually fades as they grow up and settle into a preferred route.
Although it may seem less effective than other methods, “exploration-refinement could be beneficial to birds and other organisms in a rapidly changing world due to unpredictable human-caused changes,” says Barbara Frei. “It might be safer to repeat a behavior that was recently successful than to rely on patterns that were perfected long ago but might no longer be safe.”
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. It describes animals’ habitats. B. It talks about migration models.
C. It compares different species. D. It introduces a tracking technology.
29. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. the opening for learning and practice.
B. The unique living habit of Cory’s shearwaters.
C. The process scientists track Cory’s shearwaters’ movements.
D. The way that Cory’s shearwaters form their migration patterns.
30. What does Letizia’s study find about the younger Cory’s shearwaters?
A. They travel as much as adult birds.
B. They move in a predictable manner.
C. They look for a course with their parents.
D. They fly slower than they can to explore more.
31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Man-made changes make migration easier.
B Animals make a safer journey via a fixed track.
C. Course exploration contributes to birds’ adaptability.
D. A combination of strategies assures migration success.
D
One recent report found that adults in the US check their phones, on average, 344 times a day — once every four minutes — and spend almost three hours a day on their devices in total. The problem for many of us is that one quick phone-related task leads to a quick check of our email or social media, and suddenly we’ve been trapped into endless scrolling (刷屏).
What we do know is that the simple distraction of checking a phone or seeing a notification (提示) can have negative effects. This isn’t very surprising; we know that, in general, multitasking harms memory and performance. One of the most dangerous examples is phone use while driving. One study found that merely speaking on the phone, not texting, was enough to make drivers slower to react on the road. It’s true for everyday tasks, too. Simply hearing a notification “ding” made participants of another study perform far worse on a task — almost as badly as participants who were speaking or texting on the phone during the task.
In one recent study, for example, researchers asked participants to either put their phones next to them so they were in sight (like on a desk), nearby and out of sight (like in a bag or pocket), or in another room. Participants then completed a series of tasks to test their abilities to process and remember information, their problem-solving ability, and their focus.
They were found to perform far better when their phones were in another room instead of nearby — whether in sight, powered on or not. That held true even though most of the participants claimed not to be consciously thinking about their devices.
Our brains may be subconsciously hard at work in preventing the desire to check our phones, or constantly monitoring the environment to see if we should check our phone (e. g. waiting for a notification). Either way, this distracted attention can make doing anything else more difficult. The only “fix”, the researchers found, was putting the device in a different room entirely.
32. What did the recent report in Paragraph 1 find?
A. Multitasking is very dangerous. B. Notification is always heard.
C. People are addicted to mobile phones. D. People like doing phone-related tasks.
33. According to paragraph 2, ________.
A. speaking on the phone doesn’t slow drivers’ reactions.
B. multitasking tends to reduce mental performance.
C. hearing a “ding” affects people less than texting.
D. phone distraction only matters while driving.
34. What should you do to prevent the desire of checking phones?
A. Do anything more difficult. B. Use phones to do right things.
C. Monitor the environment around. D. Stay away from phones entirely.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. How Do We Avoid the Distraction of Phones?
B. Why Are People Fond of Using Mobile Phones?
C. What Should We Do When Buying Mobile Phones?
D. How Do We Do Research by Using Mobile Phones?

Learning a new language is always exciting at the beginning, but keeping up the motivation over a long period can be really challenging. The only way to keep your motivation is to make sure the learning is accessible and fun. 36
Change the language to your target language.
This is an easy one. By simply changing the language of your mobile phone, you are exposed to many different words and phrases in your target language. 37 Most of us navigate our way around our phone without a second thought anyway. Therefore, this should be a simple method of learning more without having to try too hard.
Listen to music.
This is probably what you’ve already done. 38 If you want to be more productive, you can find lyrics online and write them down. Even if you need to pause and search for words and phrases you don’t understand, this will aid you in your learning. Listening to music will not only widen your vocabulary, but also help with your grammar as you will begin to notice patterns.
39
Even if reading isn’t your favourite pastime (消遣), short stories are good because you can read them in one sitting. For those who are ready to move on to a more advanced level, you could even try to find books you have already read in your mother tongue. Since you’ve already known the storyline, you shouldn’t get confused. You could also get the audio book to accompany your reading. 40
A. Try to practise writing in your new language.
B. Read books designed for your language level.
C. Many of them will be easily added to your vocabulary.
D. However, listening here means listening actively.
E. Here are three ways to help you learn spoken language quickly.
F. To do this, you can try several enjoyable ways to study in daily life.
G. In this way you can improve your listening skills at the same time.

Anthony was a fifth-grade student in the Albany Elementary School which had a rich history and a good reputation across the state, thanks to its devotion to providing high-quality education and shaping generations of Albany’s children.
Frankly speaking, Anthony was neither the brightest student, nor the most athletic in the school, but he had a real enthusiasm for learning and always approached his studies with strong curiosity. Every morning, he would greet the school day with a wide and genuine smile that brightened the entire classroom. His classmates couldn’t help but be influenced by his optimistic attitude towards life, which helped him become very popular and also form many friendships at school.
One unexpected day, the teacher announced a surprise test. It was a subject that Anthony had struggled with. Even more unfortunately, he was not fully prepared. As the papers were handed out, Anthony’s heart sank, and his mind went blank, with a wave of anxiety and nervousness flooding over him. He looked around, hoping for some comfort and encouragement, but all he saw were the focused expressions of his classmates. The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the occasional sound of turning papers.
As he began to write, Anthony realized that he knew only a fraction (小部分) of the answers. His mind raced, trying to recall anything that might help him, but in vain (徒劳的). Obviously, he was lost.
Just then, a piece of paper flew across the room and landed on Anthony’s desk.
