I came out of my room this morning and found Mom and Dad standing in front of the TV. On the screen, Tony Verrazo, the weatherman said, “The hurricane (飓风) has turned west and is headed for land.”
I didn’t understand what was happening, but suddenly Mom and Dad started rushing around.
“You pick up coconuts, Jason.” Dad said.
“Coconuts?” I was puzzled. We had coconut trees in the yard, but why pick up coconuts now?
I wanted to ask, but Dad had no time for me.
I had no idea what was going on but I wanted to see the hurricane, and I went to the beach. It was empty except for two men. One had a camera and the other was talking into a microphone. I recognized him—Tony Verrazo!
“Hi, kid. What’s up?” said Tony, smiling.
“Oh, I’m taking a break from picking up coconuts,” I lied.
“Coconuts,” he said thoughtfully. “I forgot all about them. Stand over here and tell the camera who you are and what you’re doing.”
“Hi,” I took the microphone. “I’m Jason and I’m picking up coconuts because the hurricane is coming.”
“Thanks, kid.” Tony said, “You’d better head home and finish your job!”
I had to do the silly job because Tony made me tell everyone what I was doing.
After hours of working in the yard, I filled up all the bags I could find. When I got inside, history was repeating itself. Mom and Dad were standing in front of the TV, and Tony was talking.
“Hurricane-force winds can make flying coconuts really dangerous! Don’t forget to pick them up! And we want to praise the person who came up with the idea,” he said.
There on TV, I was holding the microphone, saying, “Hi, I’m Jason, and I’m picking up coconuts.”
All day, I thought I had to pick up coconuts just because I was little and had to stay out of everybody’s way. Now I realized what the hurricane really was and that what I had done actually mattered.

Do you know the sun’s warmth is a kind of useful energy? Want to try using it yourself? Let’s do a cool project— making a solar (太阳能的) tower!
You can try this project at home. You just need some tapes, a pin (别针), paper, three cans and two big thick books.
Now, we’re going to build the solar tower. First, make a pinwheel (纸风车) with a piece of paper. In the second stage, cut off the tops and bottoms of the cans, place the cans on top of each other and stick them together. Next, use a pin to connect the pinwheel with the tower. Finally, put the can tower on top of the books, which are 5 cm apart from each other. So there’s a gap (间隔) at the bottom, allowing the air to enter the tower.
Now, all we have to do is to set the whole thing near a window, where there’s direct sunlight. When the sun shines on the tower, it gets hot and warms the air in it. The warmer air moves upward through the tower and makes the pinwheel turn around as it passes by. Then cooler air comes in through the gap from the bottom of the tower, gets heated up, and rises, so the cycle goes on. This is how it works. How amazing!
So next time you feel the warm sun on your face, remember that it’s more than just a nice feeling—sunlight is a powerful and useful source of energy.
9. Which step comes FIRST in building the solar tower?
A. Connect the pinwheel to the tower.
B. Make a pinwheel with paper.
C. Stick the cans together.
10. Why do we leave a gap between the two books?
A. To stop the tower from falling off.
B. To stop the books from heating up.
C. To make the air get into the tower.
11. How does the air travel through the tower? (⊕for warm air; ⊙for cold air)
A. B. C.
12. Which is the correct order of the passage structure (结构)?
A. ①Introduction→②Steps→③Materials→④Principle (原理)→⑤Conclusion
B. ①Principle→②Materials→③Steps→④Conclusion→⑤Introduction
C. ①Introduction→②Materials→③Steps→④Principle→⑤Conclusion

I wanted to go and look at a place in the middle of the island that I had found when I was exploring. We started and soon got to it, because the island was only three miles long and a quarter of a mile wide.
This place was a hill about forty feet high. We had a hard time getting to the top. The sides were so steep and the trees were so thick. We walked and climbed around all over it, and found a big hole in the rock. It was a good place to play our game. The hole was as big as two or three rooms, and Jim could stand up straight in it. It was cool there. Jim wanted to put our things there, but I said we didn’t want to be climbing up and down there all the time.
Jim said if we had the boat hidden in a good place and put all the things in the hole, we could rush there when anybody was to come to the island. They would never find us without dogs. Besides, he said that the little birds had said it was going to rain. We didn’t want the things to get wet.
So we went back and got the boat, and pulled all the things up there. Then we found a place close by to hide the boat in, among the thick willows (柳树). We took some fish off the lines and set them again, and began to get ready for dinner.
The door of the hole was big enough to roll a hogshead (大桶) in, and there was also a good place to build a fire. So we built a fire and cooked dinner. We spread the blankets inside, and ate our dinner. We put all the other things at the back of the hole.
Pretty soon it darkened and began to thunder. Directly, it began to rain, and I never saw the wind blow so heavily. It was one of those regular summer storms. It would get so dark that it looked all blue-black outside.
“Jim, this is nice,” I said. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but here. Pass me another piece of fish and some hot bread.”
“Well, if it weren’t for Jim, you wouldn’t stay here. You would stay in the woods, without food, and you would get half-dead from the shower. That’s true, dear. The chickens know when it rains, and so do the birds. I know.”
(Adapted from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn)

A. play a game B. find some animals C. build a house
14. What did Jim suggest doing?

Have you ever felt your heart beat fast and thought, “I’m so angry!”? Why does this happen? In 1962, two scientists, Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer, gave us an answer. They said our feelings come in two steps. First, our body has a physical reaction (反应), like a fast heartbeat or sweating (流汗). Then, our brain looks at the situation and decides what emotion (情绪) we are feeling. So, the same fast heartbeat could be called fear, excitement, or anger, and our mind decides which one it is.
For a long time, many people believed that to stop feeling angry, you should get it out of your system. They might shout loudly or hit something like a desk— all ways of venting anger. The idea was that by letting the emotion out, it would go away. But is this true? In 2024, two researchers, Sophie Kjaervik and Brad Bushman, decided to test this popular belief. They did not just do one small test. Instead, they carefully looked at the results of 154 different studies from around the world. In total, these studies asked 10,189 people of all ages about their anger. This big, careful way of studying makes their findings very strong and trustworthy.
Their research showed that the common idea of “letting out” anger is often wrong. Activities like running fast or boxing, which make your body more active and your heartbeat even faster, are not very helpful. In fact, they can sometimes make you feel angrier. Why? Because these activities increase the alarm signs (like a racing heart) that are part of the anger feeling. If you add more, the feeling can grow.
So, what does work? The study points to a much calmer path. Since emotions are a mix of body and mind, calming the body is key. The best ways to reduce anger are activities that calm your body down. This includes deep breathing, yoga, clearing your mind, or a quiet walk. These activities slow your heartbeat and help your body relax. Once your body is calm, your mind can also calm down and see the situation more clearly. Interestingly, some fun group activities, like playing a ball game, can also help. The fun and play help push away the anger.
The lesson is clear: next time you feel anger building, don’t feed the fire with more excitement. Try to cool the fire down, first in your body, and then in your mind.
17. According to Schachter and Singer’s theory, what happens first if you see a snake?
A. You get the feeling of fear.
B. You run away from the snake at once.
C. Your heart starts beating fast.
18. What does the underlined word “venting” probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Expressing. B. Hiding. C. Avoiding.
19. What is the main finding of the new study?
A. To reduce anger, it is better to calm the body than to excite it.
B. Making your heartbeat faster is key to dealing with anger.
C. Fast-running and boxing are the best ways to manage anger.
20. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Different emotions come from different physical reactions.
B. It tells us the right way to deal with anger from a new study.
C. Fun group activities are the best way to keep healthy.

阅读下面短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题,并将答案写到答题卡的相应位置。
Have you ever felt like studying is a bit boring but watching someone else study makes you want to join in? You’re not alone. “Study with Me” is a new way you can try. The basic idea behind it is that watching someone else study motivates (激励) us to do the same.
“Study with Me” is a kind of live broadcast (直播) on the Internet. It often shows real-time scenes of someone studying, in silence or with soft music. It creates a sense of companionship for the viewers and provides shared focus, a common experience and a feeling of community and togetherness. Studying together can make the learning process more enjoyable and effective, leading to the rising popularity of the study broadcast. More and more students around the world are attracted.
So, why does watching someone else study make us want to study too? Scientists explain that it’s a human’s natural habit. We are likely to copy the behaviors of those around us, which is called mimicry. When we watch someone else study, we are likely to follow the way they take notes, use the same study tools, or take breaks with them. What’s more, we have the need for social support. People on the screen are like our secret study partners. When we see them working hard on the screen, we might feel that we are part of a team. It can inspire us to push through our own difficulties.
“Study with Me” can be helpful, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, we should set clear study goals before joining online study partners because it can help us stay focused on our own work. Besides, it’s important not to depend on it too much because true motivation should come from within. Lastly, we’d better stick to learning with some trustworthy people who have well-organized study plans.
As we move further into the digital age, ways of learning are always changing, offering exciting new learning experiences. “Study with Me” is a great example to create global connections and encourage students to enjoy the learning journey through focus, fun, and friendship.

The Power of Role Models
Everyone has a role model in their heart. For me, it’s my father, a hard‑working worker.
What inspires me most is his spirit of never giving up. Once he met a difficult problem at work. He didn’t complain but tried different ways until he made it. Influenced by him, I have changed a lot. I used to fear difficulties in study, but now I’m braver and more confident. I also learn to help people in need.
A good role model is like a light. I will follow his steps and try to be a better person.
