Aunt Ruth gave Eli a jar of old buttons. Some looked like flowers; others were shiny stars. Eli sorted them by colour and chose eight large ones for his class collection show. He set aside the small brown buttons. They seemed too ordinary for his display.
Dad picked up one of the brown buttons. “This came from my first school coat,” he said. “Your grandma made it for me.” Eli held it beside a huge star-shaped button. “This one doesn’t look very special,” he said.
Dad found an old photo. In it, a small boy stood beside a school gate in a coat with large pockets. Eli looked closely. The coat had four brown buttons just like the one in Dad’s hand. On the back of the photo, Grandma wrote the date and the words “First day”.
Eli changed his display that evening. He replaced the star-shaped button with the brown one and put the photo beside it. He wrote a card: “A button from my dad’s first school coat.” Then he left a little space below the words.
“What goes here?” Dad asked. “Something you remember about that day,” said Eli. Dad sat down with a pen. Eli pulled up a chair beside him. The other seven buttons could wait.

Inside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in the USA, many plants lie flat on sheets of paper. Collectors dried and pressed them years ago. Some are hundreds of years old. Each sheet keeps a plant together with a label showing when and where it was collected.
These labels help scientists study changes in nature. With old and new records, they can compare where plants grow, when they flower and even the shapes of their leaves. They study many records from different years. One dried flower by itself cannot tell them how all plants changed over time.
For a long time, researchers usually had to visit the museum to study the sheets. In May 2022, a project brought nearly four million plant sheets online. People can now view pictures of the plants and their labels from far away. A huge collection has become easier to explore.
The museum continues to receive new plants. Earlier collectors could not know all of today’s research questions. Future researchers may also find new uses for the plants being collected now. Keeping a collection in good condition, with clear records, gives them something to work with.
注:press 压平;label 标签;record 记录;researcher 研究人员。
26. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to decorate a room with flowers.
B. Why every plant grows in the same way.
C. Why museums no longer need real plants.
D. How plant collections support research.
27. A plant sheet gives a date but no place. Which study is most affected?
A. Finding out where that plant once grew.
B. Measuring the length of its leaves.
C. Checking how many leaves are on it.
D. Noticing the shape of its flower.
28. What does Paragraph 3 mainly explain?
A. Why collectors stopped adding plants.
B. How researchers choose plant names.
C. How online pictures help more people explore.
D. Why all museum visits are unnecessary.
29. Which outline best shows the structure of the passage?
A. A garden plan → Costs → Rules → A competition
B. The collection → Research uses → Online pictures → Future uses
C. A journey → A lost flower → A search → A prize
D. A question → Two experiments → Results → An invitation
30. Which conclusion is NOT supported by the passage?
A. Old records can help people study changes.
B. One flower can show changes in all plants.
C. New collections may answer future questions.
D. Online pictures allow more people to explore.
