On Sunday afternoon, Ronald Sakolsky from the United States hugged his friend Yin Yuzhen at Ordos International Airport. They had been apart for 26 years.
Yin Yuzhen is a well-known desert-control hero in China. Much of the house was covered by sand in the Mu Us (毛乌素) Desert. Looking at the large yellow sand that might cover their home, she decided to fight against the desert. For more than 40 years, Yin Yuzhen has kept planting trees day after day. She has turned 70,000 acres of sandy land into green land with over 8 million young trees, creating an amazing miracle in northern China. Yin became a National Model Worker (劳模) in 2020.
In 1999, Sacos, whose real name is Ronald Sakolsky, worked as an American history teacher in Luoyang. One day he watched a TV report about Yin Yuzhen’s hard work in the desert. Deeply moved by her courage, he spent three months writing emails to raise money in the United States. Finally, he collected 5,000 dollars and sent all the money to Yin Yuzhen for tree-planting projects. Yin Yuzhen used every cent to buy young trees and planted them carefully in the desert.
After sending the money, Sacos lost touch with Yin Yuzhen. For 26 years, he could not get any news about whether those trees could survive in the terrible desert. However, Yin Yuzhen never forgot the kindness from her American friend. As the forest grew into thick woods, she made a video to look for Sacos so that she could show him the wonderful results of their hard work together.
The two old friends met again in the year 2026. When Sacos saw the large green forest that his money had helped build, he was greatly shocked. We hear about the stories of “poor students” every year. They don’t live in families rich enough to support their hobbies and even education. Cui Qingtao, a student from Yunnan, was working with his parents on a building site when he got an admission letter (录取通知书) from Peking (Beijing) University. 26 She is a student from Hebei. She was doing her part-time job in a different city when her family got her admission letter from Peking University.
It is not hard to tell that these students have a lot in common. 27 Li Enhui said in an interview, “As long as we are alive, there are no problems that cannot be solved, and many people don’t have my experiences. And these experiences make me grow and become better.” 28 He refused to accept others’ money and was determined to make money by himself. This is also the common thing that “poor students” have.
29 Not everything goes well all the time. Only by being strong and positive can one face difficulties. In fact, living in poor families doesn’t promise such good personalities, and living in happiness doesn’t promise positive attitudes. We admire such “poor students” because they are strong and optimistic. For them, few can choose the life they lead. 30 That’s why they are an inspiration to everyone.
A. Life is full of ups and downs.
B. A girl named Wang Xinyi is another example.
C. Such an idea makes many adults feel embarrassed.
D. For example, they are all strong and positive about life.
E. However, all of them can choose their attitudes towards life.
F. They have all got good grades at school and won many prizes.

Happy birthday to the Qinghai-Xizang Railway! Located on the “roof of the world”, the 1,956-kilometer railway celebrated its 20th birthday this July.
Travel between the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and the rest of China used to be difficult. In the 1950s, camels (骆驼) took three or four months to carry products from Qinghai to Lhasa, Xizang. Now, trains can do it in 48 hours.
The railway has helped business grow. Near Xining Railway Station, a market for caterpillar fungus (冬虫夏草) has developed. In the past, businessmen had to drive for days to Xizang to collect them. Now, people in Xizang can carry the plants by train, so products from the market can reach many parts of China the next day.
Lhasa West Station has changed too. The area used to be open land with dirt roads. Now, it’s a modern transport center with 11 lines that carry cars, vegetables, fruits and many other kinds. Local products are also sold to Nepal by railway.
To protect the local environment, local governments have built many parts of the railway on bridges so that wild animals can pass safely below. Today, the number of Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊) in Xizang has grown from about 70,000 in the 1990s to more than 300,000.
But the changes do not stop there. Earlier this year, China started a new power project for the railway. Once it is finished, more trains on the line will run on electricity instead of gas.
31. When was the Qinghai-Xizang Railway opened according to the text?
32. Why can caterpillar fungus reach many parts of China quickly now?
33. What did the area of Lhasa West Station use to be?
34. How do local governments protect wild animals along the railway?
35. Which one of four world records of this railway impresses you the most? Why?
