第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Jem Arrowsmith, 48, is a yarn dyer and knitting (编织) designer.
I was designing scarves and hats, but if I wanted to make it a business, I needed to offer more than just the pattern. So, I started dyeing (染色) the yarn to go with my designs.
What I adore about hand-dyed yarn is its individuality. Even if I dye the same colourway twice, no two pieces will ever be the same. That variation is the magic! I know well with colourways, but I’ll always experiment, perhaps by layering shades or find inspiration from a photo. Some of my favourite shades have come from happy accidents!
The best part is when a customer shows me what they’ve knitted with my yarn. It’s always incredible to see what the yarn, drying in my kitchen four hours, has become.

Bec Briar, 46, is a hand spinner.
I was knitting so much that I questioned whether it would be cheaper to buy some sheep rather than all the wool I was buying, but it’s absolutely not! Spinning (纺线) wool from my own sheep has become about the special connection between the animals and the end product. It’s incredible to be part of the whole process, from selecting the sheep, watching lambs being born, naming them, getting wool cut, cleaned and then finally running the fibre through my fingers at the wheel.
Slow crafting demands patience. I’ve spent three months spinning for a single piece. I’ll never earn properly for those hours, but that’s not really the point. The value is in the story, the sheep and their care. My customers get to know my sheep and can select wool from their favourite one!

When Minnesota high school coach Mike realized how beneficial it would be for his football players to spend time with senior citizens, he knew he had to put that idea in motion. Now, 16 years later, that life-changing concept has become a sweet connection both generations look forward to every year.
“Men for Others is our motto, so maybe getting the players involved in spending time with seniors would be a great way to give back,” Mike pondered. Having coached there for 30 years, he believed his job went beyond just teaching football. It also meant shaping today’s youth to be successful leaders for tomorrow. After Mike contacted local senior living facilities, he got an enthusiastic thumbs-up from The Waters.
To prepare the players, Mike invited some of the older teachers at the school, who were in their 60s and 70s, to take part in practice sessions. This helped the high school kids grow more comfortable chatting one-on-one with a senior citizen, learning proper topics and icebreakers so the students would feel more relaxed talking with seniors.
Before long, it became obvious that the kids were enjoying it as much as the older teachers. “We’ll host some fun games and contests, have snacks and you will get a chance to talk and visit with them,” Mike told his players, who were all enthusiastic about their visit.
Just as Mike hoped, the arrangement with the senior facility was a huge success. Not only did his football players and cheerleaders enjoy all the fun and interactions, but the staff praised how it brought so much joy to the residents, many of whom didn’t have visitors often.
“As long as I’m able to coach, I’m keeping it going and hope when I retire someday that it becomes a tradition that is still carried out for years to come.” Mike says.
24. What can we learn about Mike from the two paragraphs?
A. He once worked in The Waters. B. He highlights character building.
C. He taught seniors to play football. D. He plans to change the team’s motto.
25. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The preparation process. B. Methods to find fun topics.
C. Philosophy of teaching sports. D. Advice on chatting with players.
26. What can we infer about the senior residents of The Waters?
A. Most of them were football fans. B. They taught the players football skills.
C. Some of them seldom received visitors. D. They often organized activities for teens.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Giving back to the community. B. Fun Games in Senior Living Centers.
C. Shaping youth to be future leaders. D. Football Linking Teens and Seniors.

In Three-River-Source National Park of Qinghai, artificial nests installed on power towers help protect plateau birds while reducing risks to power grid (电网) operations.
The “Nest of Life” project launched by the State Grid Qinghai Electric Power Company provides safer nesting sites for birds that frequently use power towers as high resting places on the treeless grasslands of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Known as China’s “water tower”, the Three-River-Source region is home to more than 80 rare and protected bird species. As power grids expanded from 2011 to 2016, transmission towers became ideal nesting spots for large raptors (猛禽). Power towers are often the highest points where birds can better observe prey (猎物) on the ground. However, nests built too close to power lines pose risks to both birds and the grid. Birds’ wings or nesting materials can come into contact with conductors, causing short circuits, power cuts or electrocution (触电). To address the problem, the company guided them to safer nesting locations on the towers.
In 2016 the artificial nest model installed on 20 towers was tested. Later workers developed various nests for different conditions: larger wind-sand-resistant vine nests for big birds and smaller cold-proof bamboo-basket nests for Yushu area. Nests are raised 40-60 cm away from conductors; some bare wires were replaced with non-conductive ones to further protect both birds and power lines.
Every April and May, workers examine nest stability, check bamboo linings for damage and carry out repairs. The locals also help record bird activity. So far, 6,053 artificial nests have been installed across Qinghai. The project offers a practical model for balancing infrastructure development with biodiversity reservation on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
28. What is the main purpose of the “Nest of Life” project?
A. To offer safe nesting places. B. To protect tall trees.
C. To increase the bird species. D. To replace power towers.
29. Why do large raptors prefer to nest on power towers?
A. To escape from risks. B. To seek ideal partners.
C. To detect prey easily. D. To search nesting materials.
30. What can we learn about the artificial nests?
A. They have different sizes. B. They are tested every other year.
C. They can record bird activity. D. They are all made of bare wires.
31. Which of the following best describes the project?
A. Costly and risky. B. Complex and worthless.
C. Temporary and doubtful. D. Workable and beneficial.
D
With nature under threat, gardeners are on the front line and there are plenty of ways you can garden more sustainably–from planting wildflowers to avoiding chemical controls. Most gardeners are all too aware of the decline in our wildlife and wildflowers, too, as climate change impacts on native species.
There are winners and losers. The speckled wood butterfly is doing well because it is producing more generations. However, the wall brown, once common in England, is now rarely seen because warm autumns caused the young to hatch (孵化) in late autumn, when they had no hope of surviving. As a result, populations are limited to cooler coastal areas. Intense agriculture is another factor. Every inch of land and large areas of grassland have been used. Poisonous chemicals often support the crop, and this directly affects living things.
As the saying goes, you reap what you sow. Farmers face pesticide resistance and lost farm ecosystems. Thankfully, some young farmers are giving up profit-only farming and choosing wildlife-friendly sustainable farming. This is much needed because the 2019 State of Nature report paints a dark picture. According to the report, 41% of species are less common than they were. Since 1970, UK species have declined in quantity and range, and the fall continues.
With growing proof that the overuse of chemicals is not working, gardeners are taking up the baton and becoming eco warriors in their own backyards. Given that we are at the top of the food chain, it’s in our best interest to do so. After all, if I offered you a glass of water with chemicals floating on top, or told you to breathe spray containing weed killer, I doubt you’d do it.
However eco-friendly you already are, there’s more to be done.
32. What can be learned about the wall brown butterfly?
A. It survives better in warm inland areas.
B. The habitats in coastal areas are limited.
C. Its decline is associated with climate change.
D. It has completely disappeared from England.
33. How does the author support the need for sustainable farming in paragraph 3?
A. By quoting farmers. B. By providing data.
C. By explaining a concept. D. By analyzing causes.
34. What does “taking up the baton” most probably mean?
A. Picking up a stick. B. Competing with others for success.
C. Refusing to accept duty . D. Taking over the environmental task.
35. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Famous gardeners in the UK. B. Reasons for sustainable farming.
C. Bad effects of using chemicals. D. Practical ways to be even greener.

Think you probably should be exercising more, but can’t keep it up? Here comes the good news. 36 What’s more, creating healthier habits now will benefit you in the future. A few simple fitness tips are for young people and beyond.
● 37
For any new habit to stick, it helps to get really clear on why it’s important to you, as this will help you build consistency. It could be because of a health concern or you just want to fit back into a pair of trousers. Write down the reasons and read them back to feel motivated.
● Beat barriers.
Sick of making excuses not to exercise? Ask what physically stops you. Then work on overcoming the barriers. A common barrier may be lack of time. The solution is to try and fit in just a little bit of movement whenever possible. 38 Exercise is really great, so once you start, you’ll notice your confidence soon build.
● Start small.
If you’re a beginner, take ten minutes every morning doing three exercises-knee bends, press-ups and arm curls with hand weights. Do two sets of five to ten repetitions daily until it becomes routine, like cleaning your teeth. 39
● Choose yourself.
Midlife can be a busy time. The ‘sandwich years’ may involve caring for ageing parents or teenagers. 40 But if you can turn up for yourself, you can then turn up for everybody else. Having a programme in place that supports your physical and mental health builds your strength to address difficulties in the years ahead.

Years ago, I was doing a school visit in Kissimmee, Florida. I was a writer, and one of my books was on the Sunshine State Young Readers Award list. During my visit, I spoke to a group of eighth graders about writing. At the end, a girl handed me a note. It said: “Miss Lady, is your book boring?” I was surprised at first, but then I realized she was asking about something deeper. She felt she had no “voice” in her writing, and she didn’t know how to find it.
Instead of giving a lecture, I read a little bit from my own book. I told the story of a fifth-grade girl who ran for class president. She gave a speech that sounded like a politician, using big words and a serious tone. But she lost the election. The reason? Her speech didn’t sound like her. It sounded like someone else. The students listened quietly. Some of them nodded, as if they understood exactly what I meant.
Then I explained that “voice” means making your writing sound like you. It’s not about using big words or perfect grammar. It’s about being honest and letting your personality come through. The girl who wrote the note listened carefully. After I finished, she didn’t say anything. She just looked at me, then at her notebook. I could not tell whether my words had reached her at all.
The bell rang. Students began to pack up their things and head for the door. I started to gather my own papers, wondering whether I had said enough. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw her walking slowly toward me, her notebook held tightly against her chest. Her eyes were fixed on me, and I could see that she wanted to say something but was not sure how to begin.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式作答。
After class, the girl came up to me with her notebook in her hand.
Years later, I received a letter from her.

第二节
After class, the girl came up to me with her notebook in her hand. She bit her lip nervously and explained that she struggled to find her voice in writing. She showed me her composition, filled with big borrowed words that didn’t match her real feelings. I told her not to chase fancy expressions but to write what she truly thought and felt. I encouraged her to treat writing like talking to a trusted friend. Her eyes lit up as she absorbed my advice and promised to have a try.
Years later, I received a letter from her. In the letter, she recalled our talk about writing voice. She told me she had stopped copying others’ styles and started to express her true self. Her writing now sounded natural and authentic, winning high praise from her teachers. A surge of warmth washed over me. It struck me that the greatest magic of writing is to let one’s genuine personality shine through.

Text 1
M: Hello, is this Linda? I’m stuck in a traffic jam. I’m afraid I won’t be able to get to the concert hall before five o’clock.
W: It’s okay. I’ll be here waiting for you.
Text 2
M: I must say, the food was great and I’ve never had better service.
W: Well, thank you, sir. I’ll pass your praise on to the cook and the manager, and thanks for the tip.
Text 3
M: Wow, this place has got all sorts of books. There is also a nice cafe nearby. I can’t believe I’ve never been here before!
W: Great, isn’t it? It’s definitely my favourite place to buy books, even if they are a bit more expensive here than they are online.
Text 4
M: Put your shoes on. The taxi will be here in five minutes.
W: I need to brush my hair. I thought i had told you to order it at 10:00 am.
M: I did. And the taxi arrives on time. Just hurry up now.
Text 5
W: Ivan, why did you let Frank carry such a heavy box by himself yesterday?
M: He’s not a kid anymore and he should try to do things by himself. This would make him stronger.
W: So why didn’t you do it by yourself? He’s too young to carry heavy things.
Text 6
M: Hi, Linda. After you talked to me that day, I went to the dentist. He fixed my tooth.
W: That’s good. A toothache can be serious.
M: The dentist said that too! You should never ignore a toothache.
W: That’s right. And I go to the dentist every three months. So my teeth are in good condition.
M: Yes, I can’t agree more. My friend suggests that I go every six months. That’s the best.
Text 7
M: Hello, Tonya! Wish you have a good trip.
W: Thank you, Rob.
M: Why are you wearing green today?
W: Because tomorrow is a national holiday in Ireland.
M: So are you travelling to Ireland?
W: Yes! I love Ireland. The country is so pretty and green, and the music is wonderful.
M: Where will you stay when you are in Ireland?
W: My friend told me I can’t experience the natural beauty of Ireland in a normal hotel, so I booked a castle.
M: That’s wonderful. I hope you have a good trip.
Text 8
W: I’m afraid that I must throw away the old clothes.
M: It’s such a waste of money. Why not sell them in the used market?
W: The clothes are of no value.
M: It may be better to give them away than throw them away. By the way, do you care about the price when buying clothes?
W: Yeah, some people may pay more attention to quality while others may focus on brand names. But for me, I often take the price into account because I wear clothes only for one season. So there is no need to buy expensive things.
M: That’s true. I don’t think it’s essential.
W: But someone may disagree. Different people have different spending habits.
Text 9
W: Hi, Mike. Will you go back to Australia this Christmas holiday?
M: Hi, Gina. I’ve decided to stay in Los Angeles.
W: Really? My parents said if you stay in Los Angeles this year, you can come and enjoy the holiday with us.
M: Oh, please send my special thanks to them. But my German roommate Bill will stay here, too. We have made our holiday list.
W: Alright. How about Christmas dinner? Would you like to come over and have dinner with us? Ask your roommate to come with you, too.
M: Okay, I’ll ask him. This is my first holiday in America. What do I need to bring when I go to your house?
W: You don’t need to bring anything, actually. But if it makes you more comfortable, just bring a little gift for my mother.
M: Good idea. What time can I come over?
W: You can come in the early afternoon. I want to show you something special.
M: Thanks again for inviting me. I’ll call Bill right away.
