When I was at school I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer, but having decided to be a lawyer, I then had to choose which first degree I should take before starting law school in another city. I’ve always wanted to help people and I figured that taking Human Rights would allow me to learn about how I can make a real difference in the world. Vladimir I love maths. I was torn between two possibilities: I could become an engineer and apply maths at a practical level. Or I could become a maths teacher. I needn’t have worried because in the end I didn’t have to choose! I got everything I wanted thanks to my university, which will qualify me to be a high school teacher while gaining a general engineering degree at the same time. Osvaldo One of the reasons I chose this university was because of the effort that they put into organising the open day. The lecturers and current students provide an enthusiastic overview (概述) of their courses and of life in the city. This was in contrast to other universities I visited, which just let their reputation do the talking. Although I chose not to live on campus (校园), the rooms there seemed comfortable and very reasonably priced. Maria When the time came to select the university, I had three possibilities, but I still could not decide. So it was time to schedule campus tours. They all had their advantages, but this place instantly appealed to me. As soon as I arrived, I was struck by the smiles everyone gave me. What I value most here is the feeling that I am part of a supportive community. 51. What job has Kazumi made up her mind to do? A. A doctor. B. A lawyer. C. A maths teacher. D. A lecturer on Human Rights. 52. Who can obtain a double qualification from his or her university? A. Kazumi. B. Vladimir. C. Osvaldo. D. Maria. 53. Why did Osvaldo choose his university? A. His university sold itself more convincingly. B. He found the courses affordable. C. He was won over by the university’s reputation. D. His university offered excellent accommodation. 54. What do we know about Maria? A. She takes great interest in community service. B. She made her choice from the very beginning. C. She feels a sense of belonging at her university. D. She was hoping to pass on knowledge to others. 55. What’s the best title for this passage? A. Choosing your favorite subject B. How to make friends C. How to choose a community D. Choosing a university B As a child, I never considered myself an athlete at all as I was very uncoordinated (不协调的). However, I did love to run because I felt as if I was flying, but this all changed two years ago when I suffered a knee injury. I was bedridden for two weeks and I had a difficult time moving even short distances. I literally cried myself on my way to the car for a few days. When therapy wasn’t working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a godsend because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly, yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit. Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I’d feel a surge (涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn’t get swayed away by my negative thoughts. I could stay in the hot room for longer. After 3-4 months of practicing hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I’d taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better. As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms. Also, practicing yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practicing with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn’t. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger picture in life! 56. What once depressed the author terribly? A. Her inability to walk. B. Her being uncoordinated. C. Her failure to find her car. D. Her serious physical disease. 57. What was the effect of yoga classes on the author’s mind? A. She got emotionally smarter. B. She felt limited but hopeful. C. B. She couldn’t bear the pain the knee injury brought. C. She was greatly influenced by negative thoughts. D. Lack of confidence prevented the author doing yoga. 59. She has developed many healthy eating habits. D. Her social circle was widened in the yoga classes. 60. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To call on readers to sign up for yoga courses. B. To present the benefits of practicing yoga regularly. C. To show readers the necessary skills needed to do yoga. D. To share with readers her experience in taking yoga classes. C Social media can be a powerful communication tool for employees, helping them to collaborate, share ideas and solve problems. Research has shown that 82% of employees think social media can improve work relationships and 60% believe it can support decision-making processes. These beliefs contribute to a majority of workers connecting with colleagues on social media, even during work hours. Employers typically worry that social media is a productivity killer: more than half of US. employers reportedly block access to social media at work. In my research with 277 employees of a healthcare organization, I found these concerns to be misguided. Social media doesn’t reduce productivity nearly as much as it kills employee retention (留任率). In the first part of the study I surveyed the employees about why and how they used platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Respondents were then asked about their work behaviors, including whether they felt motivated in their jobs and showed initiative (主动性) at work. I found employees who engage in online social interactions with co-workers through social media blogs tend to be more motivated and come up with innovative ideas. But when employees interact with individuals outside the organization, they are less motivated and show less initiative. In the second part of the study I found 76% of employees using social media for work took an interest in other organizations they found on social media. When I examined how respondents expressed openness to new careers and employers, I found that they engaged in some key activities including researching new organizations and making new work connections. These findings present a dilemma for managers: employees using social media at work are more engaged and more productive, but they are also more likely to leave your company. Managers should implement solutions that neutralize the retention risk caused by social media. They can create social media groups in which employees will be more likely to collaborate and less likely to share withdrawal intentions or discussions about external job opportunities. Managers can also use social media to directly reduce turnover intentions, by recognizing employees’ accomplishments and giving visibility to employees’ success stories. 61. What did the author’s own research find about social media? A. It influences employees’ work negatively. B. It does much harm to employee loyalty. C. It kills employees’ motivation for work. D. It affects employers’ decision-making. 62. What did the author find in his study about the effect of online social interactions? A. It differs from employee to employee. B. It tends to vary with the platform used. C. It has much to do with whom employees interact with. D. It is irrelevant to employees’ work performance. 63. What dilemma do managers face regarding social media use? A. Employees may share confidential company information online. B. Employees using social media are more engaged but more likely to leave. C. Social media reduces employees’ productivity during work hours. D. Employees may spend too much time on social media for personal use. 64. Which of the following best replaces the word “neutralize” in the last paragraph? A. reduce B. balance C. ignore D. transfer 65. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage? A. To argue against the use of social media in the workplace. B. To highlight the benefits and risks of social media for employers. C. To provide solutions for improving employee productivity. D. To encourage employers to ban social media at work. D I’ve started to hate traveling. When my friends heard me say that, they were all shocked and confused, because I’m an absolute travel fanatic. It’s not that I dislike traveling itself: rather, I dislike the new definition that modern people have given to it, a fundamentally flawed understanding of tourism. What I hate most during every trip is hearing, “This place is perfect for photos, take a few for me.” It seems our travels have become nothing more than check-ins and photo sessions. Traveling is no longer about admiring scenery, marveling at the magnificent landscapes of our motherland, or experiencing new lifestyles. Instead, I see crowds of people snapping pictures and checking off locations, hardly anyone pausing to genuinely soak in the sights and experiences with their own eyes and hearts. The once poetic journey has transformed into the so-called modern travel trilogy: approach, photograph, leave. The sole purpose of traveling now seems to be posting on social media, showing off to everyone, and immersing oneself in a world constructed solely by one’s own posts. The goal of traveling has shifted to merely visiting check-in spots and completing the task of “checking in”. Travel has changed, and so have many aspects of our lives. We experience too little genuine joy within. I’ve asked my students why they study, and almost all of them answer that it’s to be admitted into a good university, seek a good job, and earn a lot of money. I don’t think these are wrong or even unnecessary aspirations, but where is our inner happiness and peace? When will we be able to travel for the sake of traveling, to learn for the sake of learning, to go shopping for the sake of going shopping and to preserve our authenticity? After all, we are human beings. How many of us are living day-to-day, going through the motions, turning life into a chore, a mere existence? We still have “poetry and distant horizons” to pursue. We must strive for what truly defines us as human, or we risk losing our humanity. 66. Which of the following word can best replace the underlined word “fanatic” in paragraph 1? A. Journalist. B. Psychologist. C. Enthusiast. D. Artist. 67. What is the author’s main reason for hating traveling nowadays? A. The inconvenience of modern transportation. B. The increasing cost of traveling. C. The overcrowding of tourist attractions. D. The shift in people’s perception of traveling. 68. What is the author’s attitude towards the “modern travel trilogy”? A. Disapproving. B. Favorable. C. Indifferent. D. Ambiguous. 69. What does the author think about the students’ answers regarding the purpose of studying? A. They are completely wrong. B. They are overly materialistic. C. They show a lack of ambition. D. They are reasonable but lack a deeper pursuit. 70. What does the author imply in the passage? A. The author, regrets becoming a travel fanatic. B. Modern society has lost touch with genuine experiences. C. Traveling is no longer an enjoyable activity. D. The purpose of traveling has shifted to social media. When Brantley Harrison and her family rescued a tiny, injured squirrel back, then released her back into the wild, they didn’t expect to ever see her again. Nine years later, however, little Bella, they called the squirrel Bella, still comes to visit them almost every day — as long as snacks are provided, of course. As a baby, the terrible attack made by an owl (猫头鹰) left Bella near death, she was carefully taken in by the Greenville County, South Carolina family, and raised by them alongside three other squirrels named Larry, Curly, and Moe. Bella stayed with the Harrisons until she had healed successfully thanks to a regular diet of fruit, nuts, and baby food, and was ready to jump on the trees in the forest. The sweet squirrel never goes too far from her adopted home, though, and stops by to say hello whenever she can, despite how much time has passed. “Bella sits right at the front door waiting for someone to notice she has come by for a visit. If no one notices her, she will jump over to the dining room window to wait for someone to see her,” Brantley told The Dodo. The little lady just isn’t ready to part with the family that succored her life. Whenever she stops by; she asks for nothing more than a handful of nuts. What is the most amazing part? A few years after Bella’s original stay at the Harrison house, she found her way back to them with an injured foot — and a belly full of babies — spending another few months of recovering. “It was truly amazing to watch the baby I raised raise her own babies,” Brantley said. Bella now even has her own Instagram page, where her human family documents her adventures, with almost 4 thousand followers! 71. What happened after little Bella was injured by an owl? (No more than 10 words) 72. How did the Harrisons take care of little Bella? (No more than 15 words) 73. What does the underlined word in the third paragraph mean? (Only 1 word) 74.
