Like all families, we sometimes argue (争论) about small problems. We share a small room with only one bathroom and one shower. Everyone always calls out, "Hurry up!" The busy time is my favourite.

Not many years ago, there was a world without smartphones. There was a time with no smartphones. It was a simpler time—a time of face-to-face conversations, physical maps and alarm clocks. Let's go back to that pre-smartphone age.
The first stop is communication. Communication was more personal. People wrote letters and sent faxes. Making a phone call meant dialling on a keypad and waiting. Words were the only way to express feelings, because there were no emojis (表情符号).
Next, let's talk about navigation (导航). In the past, people depended on physical maps and compasses to find their way. There was a joy in spreading out a large map and using their fingers to find their way.
Entertainment was very different as well. People read books, played board games or went outside. There were no online video apps.
In the pre-smartphone age, people also had a different relationship with time. They depended on watches and wall clocks. They had to set their alarm clocks by hand every night before going to bed. And they used calendars to mark important dates and events.
In short, life before smartphones was different but not necessarily worse. It made us more patient, more focused on the present. Maybe in the future, we'll look back at the pre-AI days like we do now. But for now, we should value the process that has shaped our current lives. It shows us how technology has changed our world, and it makes us remember the simple joys we once had.
18. What did people use to express their feelings in communication in the pre-smartphone age?
A. Emojis. B. Handwritten letters.
C. Faxes. D. Words.
19. Which of the following were forms of entertainment in the past?
①reading books ②playing board games
③watching videos online ④spending time outdoors
A. ①③④ B. ①②③ C. ①②④ D. ②③④
20. What did people use to mark important dates and events in the pre-smartphone age?
A. Physical maps and compasses. B. Physical calendars.
C. Watches and wall clocks. D. Handwritten letters.
21. What's the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.
D
The Benefits of Failure
We often treat failure as something to avoid at all costs. But the truth is that failure, when properly understood, can be one of our greatest teachers.
Some of the world’s most successful people have experienced failure after failure before finally achieving their goals. Thomas Edison made over a thousand unsuccessful attempts before inventing the light bulb. J. K. Rowling was rejected by twelve publishers before Harry Potter found a home. What sets these people apart is not the number of times they succeeded, but the number of times they refused to give up after failing.
Why is failure so valuable? First, failure teaches us what doesn’t work, helping us adjust our path. Each mistake carries a lesson that success can never provide. Second, failure builds resilience (复原力)—the ability to bounce back from difficulties. Those who have never failed may struggle when they finally meet their first setback. Third, failure often redirects us to new possibilities. Some of the greatest discoveries in history, from penicillin to Post-it Notes, were born from failed experiments.
This doesn’t mean we should try to fail. But we should change our attitude toward it. Instead of seeing failure as an end, we should see it as feedback. When a child learns to walk, they fall down many times. But we don’t call those falls “failures”—we call them practice.
Perhaps the best way to deal with failure is to ask yourself two questions: What can I learn from this? And how can I do better next time? With these questions, each failure becomes a stepping stone toward success.
22. Why does the writer mention Thomas Edison and J. K. Rowling in Paragraph 2?
A. To show that success takes a long time.
B. To show the importance of persistence after failure.
C. To compare their achievements with ordinary people’s.
D. To prove that failure is more common than success.
23. According to the text, which of the following is a value of failure?
A. It teaches how to avoid difficulties.
B. It makes people more careful.
C. It builds resilience against challenges.
D. It guarantees eventual success.
24. What does the underlined word “redirects” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Leads in a different direction. B. Puts an end to something.
C. Makes something more difficult. D. Introduces a new problem.
25. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this text?
A. To explain the process of learning from experiences.
B. To encourage a positive attitude toward failure.
C. To compare failure with success in daily life.
D. To share stories of famous inventors and writers.

She touched it, got the juice and smelled it to learn more. “If you open and press some fruits, you’ll find they are juicy,” she said.

Teamwork Changed Me a Lot
In our daily life, many things or people can leave a deep impression on us and even change us greatly.
Last year, I took part in our school football game. At first, I played badly and missed several chances to score. I felt upset and wanted to quit. But my teammates cheered me up and taught me skills patiently. We stayed after class to practice passing and shooting every day. Finally, we won the game. I learned that teamwork is the key to success and we should never give up easily.
This experience made me braver when I face difficulties, and I no longer give up when I meet problems in study. I want to say “thank you” to my teammates—they helped me become a better person.
