Since the mid‑20th century, the area of snow, grasslands and lakes in Sanjiangyuan (三江源) has become smaller because of climate change and human activities. Many wild animals in the area have died out.Snow leopards are endangered.
Later, China set up Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve (三江源自然保护区)to better protect the area and the wildlife there. In these years, the number of wild animals has been increasing.More than 70,000 Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊) live there now.And over 1,000 snow leopards can be found in the area. It's higher than the average number around the world.
The local people have improved their understanding about environmental protection and have tried hard to protect the environment in Sanjiangyuan over the years. They still live on selling Chinese caterpillar fungus (冬虫夏草)they’ve found in grasslands. In the past, they carried food with them in plastic bags and left the bags and food waste behind. But now the local people have realized they should live together with nature in harmony. They often pick up waste on the grasslands.People also take their plastic bags and food waste down the mountain after eating. The local environment has taken on a new look. Many young people there said, “We will continue to guard our home and make it more beautiful.”

Thanks to Earth, we have fresh air to breathe, clean water to drink and warm sunshine to enjoy. But it seems that we may think these things are normal and not realize that our planet is getting “sick”.
Among all the environmental problems, climate change sits at the top.Global average (平均的) temperatures have risen by more than 0.5℃ since 1992.A half‑degree temperature rise is a big thing. It means that heat waves can last around one third (三分之一)longer and rainstorms will be about one third stronger. The increase in sea levels will be much higher, according to NASA.Countries like Singapore that are at low places may be covered by the ocean in the future.
But this is not the only problem people are facing. It’s getting harder to get fresh water.Ocean pollution has become serious.Since 1992, the human population has grown by 2 billion, while the populations of all other animals have fallen by nearly 30 percent.
Scientists say that we are experiencing the sixth huge extinction in history.More than two‑thirds of the world's wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade (十年)if action isn't taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund(世界野生动物基金会).The Amur leopard, black rhino and Cross River gorilla are some animals that are in danger of dying out completely.
However, we have made some progress by making the hole in the ozone layer (臭氧层) smaller. That’s because we gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone.
This shows that when we make quick and strong decisions, we can make positive changes.
51.What may happen if global average temperatures rise by 0.5℃?
A.The ocean will cover China.
B.Cold waves can last a third longer.
C.Sea levels will be three times higher.
D.Rainstorms will be more serious.
52.What does the underlined word "extinction" probably mean?
A.birth B.death C.travel D.change
53.Which of the following environmental problems are mentioned (被提到)in the text?
①Air pollution.②Ocean pollution.③Fewer animals.④Smaller ozone layer.
A.①② B.②④ C.①③ D.②③
54.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) to the future of our planet?
A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Hopeful. D.Proud.
55.What’s the structure of the passage?
(D)
In many countries of the world, people are saying, “We must do something about our rubbish. We don’t want our world to become one big landfill site(垃圾填埋场).”
In Ireland, the government were very worried about plastic bags so they decided to make people pay for them.Since 2002, Irish people have been paying for the bags they take home from the shops.Of course, they soon stopped buying new bags and started taking bags with them when shopping.
Some countries have made even bigger changes. In 2006, the people of Zanzibar decided to stop making plastic bags. They were worried the bags were killing fish and sea animals. They also said nobody could bring plastic bags into the country.Soon there were no plastic bags in the country.
One of the most exciting recycling ideas is Freecycle. It has grown around the world.
People join a Freecycle group because they are looking for things or have things that they want to give to other people.Perhaps they have a chair they do not need any more, or they want a camera. They leave a message on the Internet to tell people what they want or what they are going to give.Nobody buys or sells anything‑people give things to other people who want them.It is a good idea because it recycles useful things.
Recycling is important and sometimes it is exciting too, but it is only one part of the answer.Using less and reusing are also important answers to the problem of rubbish.
