The father stopped for a moment and then said, “Let’s carry out an experiment (实验).” He held his son’s hand and walked him to the garden. Have you ever wondered why we say maidongxi instead of mainanbei, shangcesuo instead of xiacesuo, and yijianxiangzuo instead of yijianxiangyou? Many Chinese words have directions in them, and there is lots of history and culture hidden behind.
East or West
When going shopping, Chinese people say maidongxi instead of mainanbei. A theory says that in the Tang Dynasty, there were two popular markets in Chang’an, the national capital at that time. One was called the East Market, and the other was called the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market first, and then went to the West Market. As time went by, people started to describe shopping as maidongxi.
Up or down
We use shangcesuo to mean “go to the bathroom” and xiachufang to mean “go to the kitchen”. Why? In ancient times, houses were laid out (布局) in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the northeastern part of the house and the kitchen in the southeastern part. On maps, north is usually at the top while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we talk about the north as shang and the south as xia. So people would say they’re going up to the bathroom and down to the kitchen.
Left or right
Most people today are right-handed. They feel uncomfortable if they try to use their left hand to write or use chopsticks. This was true in old times as well. So in ancient China, “left” meant something different, such as in yijianxiangzuo. When shaking hands, it’s important to know which hand to use. In most cultures, the right hand is generally used for a handshake. For example, in some countries, such as India and Nepal, the left hand is considered unclean.
36. Why does the writer mention shangcesuo and yijianxiangzuo at the beginning?
A. To share a story. B. To solve a mystery. C. To give an example. D. To start the topic.
37. People say maidongxi instead of mainanbei because in the Tang Dynasty ________.
A. there were only two markets in ancient Chang’an
B. dongxi was easier to say than nanbei in the Tang Dynasty
C. people in Chang’an usually went to the East Market first and then the West Market
D. the East Market and West Market were more popular than the South Market and North Market
38. Which picture shows the layout of houses in ancient China according to the passage?
gate ; bathroom ; kitchen
A. B.
C. D.
39. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Left-handed people feel comfortable using chopsticks with their left hand.
B. In India and Nepal, the left hand is used for shaking hands.
C. The right hand is generally used for a handshake in most cultures.
D. In ancient China, “left” had the same meaning as it does today.
40. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Differences between left and right B. History of ancient Chinese markets
C. Interesting directions in Chinese words D. Chinese culture in old days
D 37. C 38. B 39. C 40. C

Sunshine does make people happier. Imagine how cheerful you are when it clears up after long, cold, rainy days. Let’s discover the science behind sunlight.
Sunlight causes you to produce a chemical (化学物质) called serotonin (血清素). When you are exposed to sunlight, your body will make more serotonin. Higher levels of serotonin will keep you in good spirits. At night, when there is little or no light, your body produces another chemical-melatonin It helps your body relax and will make you feel tired, which can prepare you for a good night’s sleep. You should keep a good balance between these two chemicals.
However, for many people, it is hard to balance sunlight with darkness. People who stay indoors a lot may not get enough sunlight. The light in a house is usually about 100 times less than that outside on a sunny day. That’s why it is believed that those people should get outside in the sunshine. They can get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air and be happy, all at the same time.
There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter. People in those places are more likely to get seasonal affective disorder (SAD). People with SAD usually go through bad experiences such as low energy and sadness. The most common treatment for those people is to sit under bright artificial (人工的) lights for some time.
The roles that sunshine plays in people’s lives are more than those above. For example, your body produces Vitamin D (维生素D) from sunlight, which is important for being healthy. In fact, there is more science about sunlight for you to discover. So next time, when you notice the sunshine on your shoulder, take a moment to think, “Why do we love sunshine?”

44. Jack is a person with SAD. How could he solve his problem according to the text?
A. By staying indoors a lot. B. By taking in more fresh air.

前文“In some ways, plants are like little green pets. They need food, water, sunlight and care. Which plants might you enjoy growing and which might be happy in your home or garden?”
前文“There are a lot of plants for you to choose, such as houseplants, flowers or succulents (多肉植物), even some fruits or vegetables.” 后文“Just do some research first to make sure that the plant is safe.”
本段“When choosing a plant, give it a home where it grows well. For example, you can choose a pot with holes to help keep the plant from becoming waterlogged (浸满水的). Some plants like sunlight, while others may not. Don’t forget to put your plant in a proper place.”
前文“Do you know why plants don’t survive in your home? Two main reasons—too much water or too little water.” 后文“However, a plant might be watered too much if the soil is too wet and the leaves are yellow or falling off.”
本段小标题“No hungry plants”可知本段主要围绕不要让植物挨饿展开,也就是说要给植物施肥,后文“Feed them in time, or they may suffer from slow growth or diseases. But before doing that, get to know what to feed and how to feed them. If necessary, ask an adult for help.”

The father stopped for a moment and then said, “Let’s carry out an experiment (实验).” He held his son’s hand and walked him to the garden. Then he took out two flower seeds and said, “We will plant a flower separately. I’ll care for one and water it with clean water while you’ll care for the other and water yours with dirty water. We shall see the results in a few weeks.”
As the boy joined his father in planting the flowers, it took them some days to finally germinate (使发芽) the flower seeds. “Look at the two flowers. What can you see?” the father said. The boy said, “My flower looks better and healthier than yours.
