A
“Did you forget your name?” someone asked me at a networking event a few years ago after it took me almost a minute to say it. “No, I stutter (口吃),” I politely replied. This is what I have to face every day. So I wasn’t upset.
I’ve stuttered since I was three years old. In my case, stuttering usually shows itself in terms of repetitions: “My name is S-S-S-S-Samuel.” Instead of being unhappy about the experience at the networking event, I felt proud that I’d brought up my stuttering. But I wasn’t always so forthcoming about it. When I was growing up, I hardly spoke. Whether it was at school or at work, I avoided most social situations out of embarrassment and fear of being laughed at.
But things became different after I attended the National Stuttering Association meeting, the largest gathering of stutterers worldwide. It was the first time I’d met so many other professionals who stutter—lawyers, doctors, actors, etc.—all in one place. To my surprise, everyone spoke without fear or embarrassment. In fact, they were proud. Stuttering was celebrated. That was when I first realized that stuttering isn’t something to be ashamed of. It’s just something I happen to do, and that’s okay.
The change didn’t happen overnight, but over the last eight years, I’ve started to bring up my stuttering more. I’ve talked to friends and co-workers. I’ve mentioned it in every organization I’ve worked for. And when I talk about it with others, it encourages them to open up, too. My stuttering has allowed me to connect with others and develop stronger ties with them.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s still frustrating when I know exactly what I want to say but I just can’t seem to get the words out of my mouth. But today I don’t let my stuttering hold me back. Instead, I let it push me forward and help me make progress.
1. By saying “I wasn’t always so forthcoming about it”, the author means ________.
A. he was once an outgoing person
B. he regretted talking about his stuttering
C. he used to avoid opening up about his stuttering
D. he was unwilling to receive comments on his speech
2. How did the National Stuttering Association meeting influence the author?
A. He began to make friends with stutterers.
B. He learned some skills at stopping stuttering there.
C. It made him focus his attention on good comments.
D. The confident stutterers changed his attitude to stuttering.
3. What happened after the author started bringing up his stuttering?
A. He has improved his work performance.
B. He became popular among his co-workers.
C. He learned to express himself with simple words.
D. He was able to build a close relationship with others.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The power of accepting my stutter B. The challenge from normal people
C. Special ways to live with stuttering D. My experience of overcoming stuttering
B
Greenland is the place on land that is closest to the North Pole in the world. Attracted by the beautiful icy scenery, the number of tourists visiting the country increased by 46% between 2018 and 2023. Meanwhile on the opposite side of the planet, Antarctica is seeing a similar tourism increase. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reports a steady (稳步的) rise in visitors since the 1990s — a dire tourism phenomenon for environmentalists who warn that humans can destroy fragile (脆弱的) ecosystems, influence animal behaviour and bring non-native species with them.
The attraction of the polar regions is obvious: the strength of the blue sky on a freezing, sunny day; the excitement of walking on fresh snow; and the unique wildlife that calls these places home. However, as tourism to the poles increases, organisations like the Arctic Council and Visit Greenland stress the need to balance economic benefits with environmental responsibility.
James Grecian, an oceanic ecologist, has spent years studying polar wildlife. Last year, he was in Antarctica studying snow petrels (雪鹱) — or more specifically, their vomit (呕吐物). Snow petrels have stomach oil that turns into solid pieces. When scientists study these pieces, they can learn how the petrels’ diet has changed over the years and what that means for the local ecosystem. Grecian explains that by taking samples from the environment or animals, we can learn a lot about past conditions. For example, scientists can collect baleen plates (鲸须板) from dead whales to see what the whales ate and where they lived.
Grecian knows how special these places are and how much they are affected. He believes we should act to help protect these important but threatened areas. Polar tourism is growing, but he hopes that with more awareness of its problems, visitors can make better choices.
5. What does the underlined word “dire” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Amazing. B. Alarming. C. Confusing. D. Misleading.
6. Why does the author mention baleen plates in paragraph 3?
A. To explain whale protection practice.
B. To share an exploring experience.
C. To describe the appearance of whales.
D. To show how scientists gather information.
7. Which will Grecian probably agree with?
A. Polar tourism should be encouraged.
B. Scientists should be more aware of the problems.
C. Visitors should be more environmentally responsible.
D. Climate change is to blame for the negative changes.
8. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Polar Regions: Beauty and the Wild
B. Polar Tour: Popularity and Development
C. Polar Tourism: Growth and Concerns
D. Polar Wildlife: Protection and Challenges
C
For a long time, psychologists believed in “catharsis theory,” or the idea that it’s better to release negative emotions than hold onto them. But back in 2002, Brad Bushman, a professor of communication at the Ohio State University, published a study that questioned that logic, saying that venting (发泄) “is the worst thing you can do” when you’ re mad and it’s “adding more fuel to the fire.”
Focusing on a frustrating conversation can blow out of proportion relatively minor annoyances, which is unhealthy, says Jesse Cougle, a psychology professor studying anger at Florida State University.
The problem is that when you’re furious (愤怒的), it feels better to shout angrily than it does to take some centering deep breaths. Bushman has seen that in his research. Even though activities like hitting a punching bag don’t actually lessen anger, “75% of people report feeling better” after they do it, he says. The same is often true for venting to a friend. It feels great to have someone support your perspective.
Can something that feels so good really be so wrong? Bushman says it’s not always a bad thing to get something off your chest. Talking through a negative feeling with the goal of understanding why something bothered you and how to better respond in the future, such as with a therapist, can be beneficial, he says. But venting becomes less helpful, Cougle says, when it’s mean-spirited—when you repeat the same thing you’ve done many times, keeping yourself stuck in that past anger without trying to move past it.
When you feel yourself getting stuck in the trap of venting, look for healthier coping strategies. If yoga and meditation aren’t your thing, try a quick shift in perspective. Bushman’s research supports the “fly-on-the-wall” technique, which challenges angry people to imagine themselves as a third party observing the situation that made them angry. And finally, don’t underestimate the impact of anger — that is, getting angry when you’re hungry. Science suggests it’s a real phenomenon. So next time you feel yourself gearing up for a venting session, think of grabbing a snack and taking a few deep breaths instead.
9. What is the traditional belief of venting?
A. Nothing can be worse than venting. B. Venting may lead to worse emotions.
C. Letting anger out always works well. D. Releasing negative feelings is logical.
10. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The problem of venting while angry.
B. The benefit of taking some deep breaths.
C. The temporary relief from venting anger.
D. The lessened anger after hitting something.
11. Why is the “fly-on-the-wall” technique mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To challenge angry people.
B. To replace yoga and meditation.
C. To illustrate change in perspective.
D. To observe the situation as a third party.
12. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The psychological risk of venting and its influence.
B. The harm of venting anger and its coping techniques.
C. The science of hunger-related anger and its solutions.
D. The development of catharsis theory and its modern debates.

“For your final project, you must work in pairs to cultivate (培育) a plant and make a presentation,” announced Mr. Davis, the biology teacher.
Nora and Mia, two close friends with a shared passion for nature, naturally teamed up. Aiming for a good grade, they began co-tending (共同照顾) to a rare “Moonlight Orchid” in the school greenhouse. It was a delicate flower that required strict temperature control and precise watering.
They shared the duties perfectly. Nora would prune (修剪) the plant with scissors and check the soil moisture (湿度), while Mia would spray water over its petals and ensure the heater maintained a constant warmth.
On a freezing Saturday night, Mia was supposed to check the greenhouse heater. Unfortunately, Mia’s younger brother suddenly developed a dangerously high fever and struggled to breathe. Panicked and busy helping her mother, Mia completely forgot about the greenhouse and failed to message Nora. When Nora arrived on Sunday morning, she was greeted by a tragic sight. The heater had stopped working, and the sharp drop in temperature had left the orchid's leaves curled and its stems drooping.
Minutes later, Mia rushed in, her eyes red from a sleepless night in the hospital. Before Mia could explain, Nora exploded, “How could you be so irresponsible? You ruined everything we’ve worked for!”Hurt by Nora's mean words, Mia cried, “My brother was in the emergency room! Not everything is about this plant, Nora!” Mia turned and ran out of the greenhouse.
For the next few days, a heavy atmosphere hung between them. They avoided each other in the hallways. Nora spent every day alone in the greenhouse, struggling to revive (使复活) the orchid, but the recovery process was simply too much for one pair of hands. The presentation was only a week away, and the weight of the work, coupled with the guilt of her outburst (爆发), made Nora feel entirely overwhelmed (难以承受的).
Paragraph 1: As Nora was sitting helplessly in the greenhouse, the door was pulled open.

Paragraph 2: On presentation day, they carefully carried their orchid to the front of the class.

B 6. D 7. C 8. C

根据倒数第二段“Grecian explains that by taking samples from the environment or animals, we can learn a lot about past conditions. For example, scientists can collect baleen plates (鲸须板) from dead whales to see what the whales ate and where they lived.(Grecian解释说,通过对环境或动物进行采样,我们可以了解到很多关于过去状况的信息。例如,科学家可以从死去的鲸鱼身上收集鲸须板,以此来了解这些鲸鱼的食物来源以及它们曾经的生活区域。)”可知,作者在第3段提到鲸须板是为了展示科学家是如何收集信息的。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“He believes we should act to help protect these important but threatened areas. Polar tourism is growing, but he hopes that with more awareness of its problems, visitors can make better choices.(他认为我们应该采取行动,帮助保护这些重要但受到威胁的地区。极地旅游正在增长,但他希望随着人们对极地问题的更多认识,游客可以做出更好的选择。)”可知,Grecian可能会同意的观点是游客应该对环境更负责任。故选C。
【8题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Attracted by the beautiful icy scenery, the number of tourists visiting the country increased by 46% between 2018 and 2023. Meanwhile on the opposite side of the planet, Antarctica is seeing a similar tourism increase. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reports a steady (稳步的) rise in visitors since the 1990s—a dire tourism phenomenon for environmentalists who warn that humans can destroy fragile (脆弱的) ecosystems, influence animal behaviour and bring non-native species with them.(受美丽冰川景色的吸引,在2018年至2023年期间,前往该国旅游的游客数量增长了46%。

D 10. C 11. C 12. B
根据第一段“For a long time, psychologists believed in “catharsis theory,” or the idea that it’s better to release negative emotions than hold onto them. (长期以来,心理学家们信奉“宣泄理论”,即认为释放负面情绪比压抑它们更好的观点。)”可知,传统的发泄观点是释放负面情绪是合乎逻辑的。故选D项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“The problem is that when you’re furious (愤怒的), it feels better to shout angrily than it does to take some centering deep breaths. (他说,尽管像打沙袋这样的活动实际上并不能减轻愤怒,但“75%的人表示在做了这些活动后感觉更好”。)”可知,研究发现75%的人认为这些活动后会感觉更好,由此可知,研究中发现的“that”指的是发泄愤怒带来的暂时缓解。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“When you feel yourself getting stuck in the trap of venting, look for healthier coping strategies. If yoga and meditation aren’t your thing, try a quick shift in perspective. Bushman’s research supports the “fly-on-the-wall” technique, which challenges angry people to imagine themselves as a third party observing the situation that made them angry. (当你感觉自己陷入宣泄的陷阱时,要寻找更健康的应对策略。如果瑜伽和冥想不合你的心意,试试快速转换视角。布什曼的研究支持“墙上苍蝇”技巧,即让愤怒的人想象自己作为第三方观察令他们生气的情境。)”可推断,第五段提到“墙上苍蝇”技巧是为了说明视角的变化。故选C项。
【12题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“But back in 2002, Brad Bushman, a professor of communication at the Ohio State University, published a study that questioned that logic, saying that venting (发泄) “is the worst thing you can do” when you’ re mad and it’s “adding more fuel to the fire.”(但早在2002年,俄亥俄州立大学传播学教授布拉德・布什曼发表了一项研究,对这一逻辑提出了质疑。他指出,生气时发泄“是你能做的最糟糕的事情”,这无异于“火上浇油”。)”可知,文章先指出传统宣泄理论的问题,接着说明发泄愤怒的危害,最后介绍应对技巧,“发泄愤怒的危害及其应对技巧”最能概括全文。故选B项。

I’m writing to discuss our Novel Reading Challenge with you.
Now most students find it hard to stick to the activity. The main reasons are that the selected novels are far beyond our current level, and we have no fixed time to share reading thoughts, which makes the process rather boring. To make the activity more engaging, we are thinking of dividing members into different groups based on their reading level, and holding a 10-minute sharing session every week. 69.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: On presentation day, they carefully carried their orchid to the front of the class.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
As Nora was sitting helplessly in the greenhouse, the door was pulled open. It was Mia, holding a small notebook filled with notes about the orchid. Before Nora could speak, Mia apologized softly, explaining that her brother had been rushed to the hospital and she had not meant to disappear. Nora’s anger melted into shame. “I shouldn’t have blamed you,” she whispered. They decided to work together again. Nora checked the soil and carefully cut the damaged leaves, while Mia repaired the heater and misted the petals. Though the orchid still looked weak, they felt hope returning.
Paragraph 2:
On presentation day, they carefully carried their orchid to the front of the class. Under the sunlight, a pale flower had finally opened, shining like moonlight. Mr. Davis praised not only their plant, but also their honesty and teamwork. Nora and Mia explained how they had argued, misunderstood each other, and then learned to listen. They realized that caring for a plant was like caring for friendship: it needed patience, trust, and shared responsibility. Looking at each other, they smiled, knowing they had grown far more than the orchid.
