Jackie Hsiao, a sophomore (大二学生) at the University of Rochester Fencing Club (击剑俱乐部), competed in the 2025 Fencing Junior Olympics in Charlotte, NC. This event marked the peak of six-year fencing journey and her first national-level encounter with elite fencers.
Hsiao’s fencing adventure began at a summer camp before her eighth grade year. Though she initially hated it due to long, sweaty hours in fencing equipment and competing against more experienced opponents, her time at camp kindled her interest in the sport within her.
In high school, Hsiao found a welcoming community of fencers and coaches. She developed and refined her skills with the foil, the smallest and lightest fencing weapon. However, during her senior year, a devastating ACL tear (前交叉韧带断裂) put her career at risk. “I doubted if I’d return to fencing,” she said. After surgery and nine months of painful physical therapy, two to three times a week, Hsiao began fencing again. Her defensive fencing style remained mostly the same, though she had to think more about her back leg position.
On the mental side, Hsiao emphasized positive thinking and mental preparation. She believed that negative thoughts could impact performance and learned to stop over-thinking during competition. Hsiao also revealed the life lessons fencing has taught her, saying,” Persistence is the key and losing is one of the best ways to learn.”
Her family has been supporting her through her fencing journey. When she was qualified for the 2025 Fencing Junior Olympics, she immediately shared the news with her mother. At the Junior Olympics, she even met her favourite fencers, Lee Kiefer and Maia chamberlain.
Jackie’s next goal is to continue competing at the national level and earn a rating from the United States Fencing Association. Recently, she was president of the University of Rochester Fencing Club. In April, she will lead her team to the United States Association of Collegiate Fencing Clubs Championship.
24. What made Jackie Hsiao first become interested in fencing?
A. Her mother’s strong encouragement.
B. Meeting famous fencers at the Junior Olympics.
C. Her high school fencing community and coaches.
D. A summer camp experience before eighth grade.
25. How did Jackie’s fencing style change after her recovery?
A. She became more aggressive in attack.
B. She completely abandoned her defensive style.
C. She paid more attention to her back leg position.
D. She reduced her training frequency to once a week.
26. What important life lessons did Jackie Hsiao learn from fencing?
A. Little strokes fell great oaks. B. Look before you leap.
C. Strike while the iron is hot. D. Many hands make light work.
27. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To highlight the role of family support in athletic success.
B. To analyse the training methods of extraordinary fencers.
C. To promote the 2025 Fencing Junior Olympics in Charlotte.
D. To present an elite fencer’s journey from adversity to achievement.
C (原题)
Today, with the help of AI tools, anyone can instantly generate impressive architectural images. Yet this raises a serious question for architects: if technology lowers the technical barrier, what remains the true value of design? The answer, many experts believe, lies in deeper philosophical (哲学的) thinking.
Architecture is not only about structure. It also reflects how humans understand life. This understanding begins with the individual-how a building can shape people’s emotions. It then extends to the community-whether a neighborhood design brings people together or drives them apart. Ultimately, it touches upon time itself-how to balance the preservation of historical identity with the need for change.
AI can copy thousands of design styles, but it cannot make value judgments. It doesn’t know why some designs are good in a moral or human sense. For instance, a library in Colombia places its reading rooms, not offices, in the brightest and highest spaces-a design choice symbolizing equality and care. As scholar Nayef Al-Rodhan points out, “Good design should possess valuable qualities, including respect, inclusion, and safety, which cannot be left to AI to handle.”
In the future, the best architects may not be those who master AI tools, but those who comprehend philosophical reflection. Saudi Arabia’s project “The Line” is a case in point. Designed to let residents live in harmony with nature, the city spans 170 kilometres in length yet is only 200 metres wide, with no cars, no streets, and a transit system that reaches any destination within five minutes. Whether The Line succeeds or fails, it reminds us that although technology can help us design the city, it cannot judge for us what kind of life is worth living, and AI can’t fathom the deepest beliefs we have for our lives.
Freed from repetitive drafting work, architects in the age of AI must think more deeply about humanity, community, and sustainability. The great designs of the future will emerge where technology meets philosophy, not where one replaces the other.
28. What is the main function of paragraph 2 in the passage?
A. To introduce examples of architecture.
B. To compare architecture with philosophy.
C. To present architecture from a philosophical view.
D. To explain how AI will change future construction.
29. What can we learn from the example of the library in Colombia?
A. Great design is human-centered.
B. AI can understand public buildings.
C. Symbolic meaning should be considered.
D. Equality is the core value of modern design.
30. What does the underlined word “fathom” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Decline. B. Understand. C. Recover. D. Measure.
31. According to the passage, what should architects do in the age of AI?
A. Shift from drawing to building. B. Employ AI as a powerful tool.
C. Prioritize philosophy over function. D. Bring soul and meaning to designs.

Food markets have experienced considerable instability in recent years. Global warming is causing droughts, soil desertification and extreme weather. Yet the fundamentals of food production were last transformed in the mid-20th century. Fortunately, global investments in agricultural innovation are on the rise. Funds for agritech companies reached $16.2 billion in 2025. Of this, $9 billion went to new research into boosting farm yields, up from $2.5 billion in 2016. The focus of sustainability efforts is switching from preventing climate change to dealing with it and finding solutions.
Scientists are developing alternatives to the pesticides and fertilizers that have dominated modern agriculture since the Green Revolution of the mid-20th century, based on a better understanding of plants themselves. B-COS, a team from Chent University, is genetically engineering bacteria to produce a special kind of molecule (分子). Tomato and potato plants sprayed (喷洒) with the molecules are tricked into believing they are under attack and activate their natural defenses against infection. B-COS is applying this approach to two new products: one to improve growth and drought tolerance, and another which it claims can reduce disease incidence by 40-50%.
Naturally, there are also companies exploring the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. The general idea of this combination is called “precision agriculture”, which is to help farmers connect everything from the environmental conditions of individual fields to the genetic sequences (序列) of the bacteria present in the soil, and those of the plants themselves. This is then run through AI models that make predictions about the best conditions and treatments to achieve the highest yields or produce the highest-quality crops.
“It is going to show us what’s going on in each square metre of the fields, such as temperature, water and carbon absorption,” says Mr. Anders, a managing partner of an agritech company.
There is still a long way to go. In 2024, agricultural tech companies attracted just 1.3% of global early-stage venture — capital funding despite agriculture accounting for about 4% of global GDP. But if high-tech innovations still make their way, and the funds keep flowing, a new age of precision agriculture is coming.
32. What is highlighted concerning agricultural investment in Paragraph 1?
A. Its instability. B. Its source. C. Its influence. D. Its shift.
33. Why did the B-COS team spray the molecules on tomato and potato plants?
A. To evaluate disease tolerance. B. To eliminate harmful substances.
C. To boost natural resistance. D. To protect healthy plants.
34. What does “precision agriculture” contribute to?
A. Accurate market forecasting. B. Efficient harvesting techniques.
C. Sufficient genetic information. D. Reasonable agricultural planning.
35. What is the the author’s purpose in presenting the data in the last paragraph?
A. To call for greater investment. B. To warn of potential risks.
C. To cast light on the achievements. D. To give credit to the companies.

Social media is widely used in daily life, but it can also cause problems if people are not careful. Many users post or send things without thinking about the possible results. These actions may affect how others see them in the future. 36 Follow these simple strategies to stay away from future trouble.
Never post anything you would be ashamed for certain others to see. Think about what your family, friends, future employers or college admission decision-makers might think if they saw it. How would you feel if that statement or picture was forever tied to your name and your identity? 37 Remember, your keyboard may have a “delete (删除)” button, but once online it is often impossible to remove.
Start building a good online image early. Don’t wait until you apply for college or jobs. Every post you share should leave an ice and positive impression on others. Besides, actively involve yourself in meaningful activities: study well, do volunteer work, play sports and organize group events. 38
Never share your private information online. Bad people online always try to steal personal details just for money. 39 Even with privacy settings, others may still find secret ways to get your personal information.
40 Do not post others’ photos without their permission. If they ask you to delete related content, you should do it at once. Besides, never post or reply online when you are angry. Put down your device and calm down for hours or even days. Emotional replies will never solve problems but only make things much worse.
A. Does it really represent who you are?
B. Does it really matter what others think of you?
C. These activities will help you meet new friends.
D. Be thoughtful and respectful to other users online.
E. So it is important to learn to use social media wisely.
F. You can also write positive and creative articles online.
G. Never post your home address, birth date or phone number online.
