I used to be a night owl. I would stay up until 1 am watching videos or playing games, and then struggle to wake up at 7 am for school. I was always tired and grumpy in the morning. My grades started to suffer, and I knew I had to make a change.
I decided to become a morning person. It wasn’t easy at first. For the first week, I forced myself to go to bed at 10:30 pm and wake up at 6 am. I felt exhausted. But I kept going. After a month, I started to enjoy my mornings. The quiet hours before everyone else woke up became my favorite time of day. I could read, think, and plan without any distractions. I realized that I was not just changing my schedule — I was changing my whole attitude towards life.

Study Smarter, Not Longer
For a long time, students believed that sitting at a desk for five hours was the secret to good marks. New studies tell a different story. What really builds knowledge is not the number of hours, but the way the brain meets the material.
One powerful method is self-testing. After reading a page, close the book. Try to write down the main points in your own words. If you cannot, you have found a blind spot. This is better than reading the same lines ten times.
Another helpful habit is spacing. Do not cram everything into one night. Learn a little on Monday, return to it on Wednesday, and check again on Sunday. Each time you meet the information again, your memory gets stronger.
Some learners also use mind maps. They put a central idea in the middle of a page and draw branches for details. Drawing connections between facts helps the brain store them, not as a list, but as a network.
Technology can help, but only if used well. A phone app that makes a plan for you is fine. But if the screen just feeds you short videos, your attention breaks. The tool should serve the goal, not replace thinking.
Before any study session, ask three questions: What is my target today? Am I really understanding it? What mistake did I make last time? This habit of watching your own thinking is called metacognition. It turns a passive reader into a person who controls the learning.
Smart learning is not magic. It is a mix of testing yourself, spacing your reviews, mapping ideas, using tools wisely, and thinking about your own thinking.
21. What does the writer say about studying for many hours?
A. It is the best way to get good marks.
B. The number of hours matters less than the way of learning.
C. Five hours a day is the secret to success.
D. Long hours never help.
22. Why is self-testing better than reading the same page many times?
A. It saves paper. B. It helps find what you do not really know.
C. It is faster. D. It needs no book.
23. The word “spacing” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “________”.
A. 熬夜 B. 间隔重复 C. 抄写 D. 画思维导图
24. According to the passage, how should we use learning apps?
A. Let them replace all thinking.
B. Use them only for watching short videos.
C. Let them serve our study goal, not break our attention.
D. Never use them because they are useless.
25. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Students should study five hours a day.
B. Smart learning means using better methods, not just studying longer.
C. Mind maps are the only useful tool.
D. Metacognition is too difficult for middle school students.

Huang Xuhua, chief designer of China’s first nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away in Wuhan on February 6th, 2025. He is known as “the Father of China’s Nuclear Submarines”.
Born in Guangdong in March 1926 into a doctor’s family, Huang was the third child. He spent his boyhood during the war and later studied shipbuilding at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. After graduating in 1949, he worked in the shipbuilding industry all his life. In 1958, Huang was secretly called to Beijing to join the team designing China’s first nuclear submarine. For the next 30 years, he rarely went home.
At that time, China had no basic conditions for building nuclear submarines. The researchers knew almost nothing about this field. Worse still, foreign countries kept the technology secret and provided little information.
So Huang and his team began by searching newspapers and magazines for useful information. After careful analysis (分析) and study of two US submarine models, they came up with five designs. Without computers, they used abacuses (算盘) to do calculations. To make sure the results were correct, they divided into three groups to work on the maths at the same time. If the three values differed, they would redo the work.
After years of hard work, China built its first nuclear submarine in 1970, becoming the fifth country to own one.
Huang’s name remained unknown until 1987, when a Shanghai magazine published a report with only his family name. Even in his 90s, he went to his office every weekday to review materials and give advice to young researchers. In 2019, he received the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honour.

Do you know about the habit of giving praise? Praise means saying good words about someone or something. It can make people feel good. However, many Chinese people are not good at giving praise. They often feel shy when they want to praise others.
A study shows that receiving praise is helpful for people’s growth. When we get praise, we become more confident and willing to try new things. But praise should be given in a right way. Not all praise works well.
Some people give general praise, such as “You are so smart!” This kind of praise focuses on people’s nature. Kids who often get this praise may think they are born smart. When they fail, they will feel bad and give up easily. It is better to give specific praise. For example, “You worked really hard on this project.” This praise pays attention to one’s effort. It tells people that hard work matters. When they meet difficulties, they will keep trying.
Besides, praise should be honest. If you praise someone for something he didn’t do, he will know you are not sincere. Your praise will lose its meaning.
Praise is a gift. Learn to give proper praise to people around you.

C

B. The number of hours matters less than the way of learning.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了高效学习的多种方法,说明学习重在讲究策略而非单纯拉长学习时长。
【21题详解】
第一段指出:“What really builds knowledge is not the number of hours, but the way the brain meets the material.”,作者认为真正构建知识的是大脑接触材料的方法,而不是学习的小时数,即学习方法比时长更重要。
【22题详解】
第二段提到:“If you cannot, you have found a blind spot. This is better than reading the same lines ten times.”,自测时如果不能写出要点,就发现了盲点,这比反复阅读更好,因为它能帮助找出自己不知道的内容。
【23题详解】
第三段介绍:“Do not cram everything into one night. Learn a little on Monday, return to it on Wednesday, and check again on Sunday.”,作者建议不要把所有内容都堆到一晚突击背诵,而是分几天多次复习,因此“spacing”意为“间隔重复”。
【24题详解】
第五段提到:“But if the screen just feeds you short videos, your attention breaks. The tool should serve the goal, not replace thinking.”,使用学习软件应让其服务于学习目标,而不是破坏注意力或替代思考。
