Ugochin is a foreign student studying in China. She took part in the show A Foreign Apprentice Comes to the Mountains in Yunhe, Zhejiang Province, to know more about Chinese country life. She fully experienced it in the show.
In front of the camera, she worked together with local villagers to dig potatoes, make tofu, catch fish and cook tasty meals. Away from the camera, she was interested in this peaceful country life. Such a life was shaped more by land, weather and old customs rather than busy work.
“China’s rural revitalization (乡村振兴) is really amazing.” Ugochin said. In Yunhe, she met local young villagers who had made a big difference. Instead of selling farm produce (农产品) in the old way, they packed it differently to make it look cooler. They also used livestreaming to reach customers across the country. By trying these new methods, they brought fresh energy to their hometown.
Apart from new looks in the countryside, Yunhe’s respect for traditions also impressed (留下印象) Ugochin. “This experience tells me that while we push forward rural revitalization, we should also protect old buildings, carry forward history and keep traditional skills alive.” she shared.
When the filming ended, Ugochin was not ready to leave the experience behind. She planned to go back to Yunhe and spend more time enjoying the priceless giving of the countryside. With the world becoming warmer because of climate change, mosquitoes are busy enlarging their living space. Now, a Chinese company has created a new device which can detect mosquitoes and then kill them. The device promises a future in which the peace and quiet of a summer evening is no longer broken by flying mosquitoes.
The small, light device uses AI to discover mosquitoes as small as 2 millimeters (毫米). Within 0.003 seconds, it fires a high-energy laser (激光) that disables a mosquito midflight — a course that can hardly be seen by humans — and can kill up to 30 mosquitoes every second.
The Chinese device is not alone in mosquito control. The Locus, which is made by a foreign company, uses computers to locate (定位) mosquitoes indoors. However, while the Locus focuses on location, the Chinese device goes a step further by killing mosquitoes.
It is not easy to improve the accuracy rate (准确率). The early models of the Chinese device failed to correctly discover mosquitoes within a short distance, as they were influenced by background noise. After years of hard work, careful research and countless tests, the company put AI and laser technology together, enabling a discovery rate of over 95 percent within six meters.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are over 3,500 kinds of mosquitoes in the world. About 200 kinds can spread diseases. Every year, mosquitoes kill more than 700,000 people. Millions of people face this risk every day. This new Chinese device provides a safe and effective way to fight mosquitoes and protect people’s health.
11. What does the underlined word “detect” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Warn. B. Blow. C. Watch. D. Discover.
12. How does the writer prove the effectiveness of the device in Paragraph 2?
A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers.
C. By making comparisons. D. By using experts’ words.
13. What is an advantage of the Chinese device over the Locus?
A. Killing mosquitoes after location.
B. Focusing on mosquitoes outdoors.
C. Finding mosquitoes in a short time.
D. Using AI to drive mosquitoes away.
14. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. How the device was tested.
B. The influence of noise on accuracy.
C. How AI was used in the device.
D. The road to a high accuracy rate.
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Most mosquitoes are dangerous.
B. The Chinese device is of great use.
C. Mosquitoes around us have been controlled.
D. The Chinese device is praised by the WHO.

In a studio in Tianjin, a clay (泥) statue of the writer Lu Xun stands apart from the more familiar figures (人物) of Chinese folk tales that are around it.
Unlike the bright works traditionally connected with the 100-year-old Clay Figurine Zhang school (“泥人张”流派) , the statue is left in its natural clay colour. Its creator, Zhang Yu, said the simple way shows his own choice and changing tastes.
“Traditional clay figures are very colourful,” said Zhang, the sixth-generation inheritor (继承人) of the nationally recognised intangible cultural heritage. “But the raw (自然状态的) clay makes the shape and the spirit of the figure Lu Xun stand out. I think it fits modern ideas of beauty better. ”
The Clay Figurine Zhang tradition started in the late Qing dynasty and is known for its finely painted, lively figures, often from history, opera, and mythology (神话).
Zhang’s clay sculptures (雕塑) have a special style. When making characters, he focuses on showing their inner spirit. “Every line has to serve the spirit of the character,” he said.
Under the inheritor’s hands, Lu Xun’s brow is drawn together, and his eyes are sharp. The lines are simple, but very lively. This style makes Zhang’s works easy to recognise among all kinds of traditional clay sculptures.
Along with the more serious works, there are also some fun pieces for young people, including a small sculpture of a horse carrying a gold ingot, which is a clever way to show the idea of “wealth arriving on horseback”. He made it for the Year of the Horse. “We need to make young people think clay sculpture is fun,” Zhang said. By making lighter, cuter works, he hopes to make the traditional art form easier for people to enjoy.
Zhang said that each generation of the Clay Figurine Zhang family has developed its own style, instead of copying the past. Although traditional subjects such as Zhong Kui and Guan Yu are still important, he believes innovation is necessary to pass the craft down. “Our task is to let ancient art continue to live in the present,” he said.
16. What can we learn about the Clay Figurine Zhang school?
A. It has a very long history. B. It creates simple clay figures.
C. It always uses natural clay colours. D. It focuses on figures from folk tales.
17. What does Zhang Yu mean by “Every line has to serve the spirit of the character” in Paragraph 5?
A. Lines can show a character’s inner world. B. Characters need simple and lively lines.
C. Lines are more important than spirit. D. Lines should be painted carefully.
18. Why did Zhang Yu make cute works like the horse with a gold ingot?
A. To sell more clay sculptures for money.
B. To help young people become interested in clay art.
C. To follow the old style of Clay Figurine Zhang.
D. To show the long history of the art.
19. The word “innovation” in the last paragraph probably means “_________”.
A. copying old works B. making new changes
C. keeping traditional subjects important D. using bright colours
20. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The history of the ancient art. B. The Clay Figurine Zhang family.
C. A clay statue of the writer Lu Xun. D. Zhang Yu’s creative clay sculptures.

The Lesson Beyond Success
Fifteen-year-old Lily Chen was a member of her school’s science club. She was not the most experienced student in the group, but she was well-known for her creative ideas and ability to solve problems in unusual ways. Her classmates believed that she had great potential, although Lily often doubted whether she was good enough.
This year, the science club started preparing for a national invention competition. A new coach, Ms Wang, became the team leader. Unlike other coaches, Ms Wang was very strict about every detail. She required students to test their ideas again and again, and every mistake had to be recorded and analyzed.
At first, Lily enjoyed the challenge. However, after weeks of repeated experiments, she became disappointed. Many of her designs failed, and she started to worry that she might disappoint her team. Some students wanted to give up, but Ms Wang told them, “Failure is not the opposite of success. It is part of the process of finding better solutions.”
A few days before the competition, Lily’s most important experiment failed again. Instead of blaming her, Ms Wang quietly placed Lily’s project notebook on the table and wrote a short message on the first page: “________”
Lily read the message several times. She suddenly realized that she had been paying too much attention to getting the perfect result and had ignored (忽视) what she could learn from each failure. She began to carefully study every mistake, change her methods, and improve her design step by step.
On the day of the competition, Lily’s invention was not the most excellent one, but it showed clear improvement and careful thinking. The judges praised her ability to solve problems and learn from mistakes. Although she did not win the first prize, Lily felt proud because she had discovered a more important ability.
After the competition, Ms Wang smiled and said, “You have learned the most important lesson.”
Lily finally understood that becoming a better inventor was not only about creating successful products, but also about improving herself through practice, mistakes and challenges.
