In Pampa Miraflores, most families rely on cocoa farming — a livelihood so unstable that children are often called upon to work the fields to help keep their family afloat. Merlyn had a different dream and he is currently working to complete his first year as a civil engineering student at a top university in Lima.
The road to success was not an easy one, and was paved with hard work and support from a strong family.
Merlyn’s parents, John and Nayci, know this struggle well. Merlyn’s father once dreamed of becoming a mechanic, but he had to drop out of school to work and support his family. Nayci’s journey was equally arduous. She loved her studies, braving a dangerous, hour-long walk to school over rough roads. However, when her mother fell ill, her educational journey came to a sudden end.
“My husband grows cocoa on the farm, but he doesn’t have a fixed income,” Nayci explains, adding that the family helps Merlyn with day-to-day expenses.
To make ends meet, she works two roles — as an early childhood educator and a social worker. Together, her two salaries total approximately $435 a month. It’s a challenge supporting a family and a son studying in the capital, but a vital lifeline has helped them bridge the gap.
When Merlyn was 5, the family enrolled in Juntos, a national conditional cash transfer program. Through the program, families receive about $57 every two months, provided they fulfil specific responsibilities: keeping their children in school and ensuring they attend regular health checkups.
For Nayci, the impact is felt in small but essential moments of daily life. “Now the children are healthier and learning better,” she says. “Most of the time, we have nothing at home, and then the money arrives — we use it to buy food, a notebook, or shoes.”
Such investments are paying off. Merlyn has become a symbol of hope for the entire community. His success has created a ripple effect among other children at the local school: If Merlyn did it, we can too.
4. What does the underlined word “arduous” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Boring. B. Bittersweet. C. Harmful. D. Struggling.
5. What can we learn about Merlyn’s parents?
A. They didn’t value their opportunity to study.
B. They had difficulty supporting his education.
C. They benefited from Juntos in their childhood.
D. They were unwilling to send him to the capital.
6. How does Merlyn’s family mainly spend the money from the program?
A. Purchasing some necessities. B. Sponsoring their community.
C. Celebrating special occasions. D. Having family health checkups.
7. What impact does Merlyn’s success have on his community?
A. It allows neighbors to form close bonds. B. It reminds others to mind their health.
C. It inspires more students to study hard. D. It drives more organizations to donate.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C
根据第三段中“Merlyn’s father once dreamed of becoming a mechanic, but he had to drop out of school to work and support his family. Nayci’s journey was equally arduous. She loved her studies, braving a dangerous, hour-long walk to school over rough roads. However, when her mother fell ill, her educational journey came to a sudden end.
根据第四段““My husband grows cocoa on the farm, but he doesn’t have a fixed income,”Nayci explains, adding that the family helps Merlyn with day-to-day expenses. (“我丈夫在农场种可可,但没有固定收入。”奈西解释道,家里还要补贴梅林的日常开销。)”及第五段“To make ends meet, she works two roles — as an early childhood educator and a social worker. Together, her two salaries total approximately $435 a month. It’s a challenge supporting a family and a son studying in the capital, but a vital lifeline has helped them bridge the gap. (为维持收支,她身兼两份工作——幼儿教师与社会工作者。两份工资加起来每月大约435美元。供养全家,还要供儿子在首都读书十分艰难,但一项至关重要的救济项目帮他们填补了资金缺口。)”可知,父亲种植可可没有固定收入,母亲打两份工,还依靠项目补贴,才能支持儿子在首都读书,这表明他们支持儿子的教育很困难。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第七段“For Nayci, the impact is felt in small but essential moments of daily life. “Now the children are healthier and learning better,” she says. “Most of the time, we have nothing at home, and then the money arrives — we use it to buy food, a notebook, or shoes.” (对奈西而言,改变体现在日常生活那些微小却不可或缺的瞬间。“现在孩子们身体更健康,学习也更好,”她说,“大多数时候家里一无所有,补助款到账后,我们就用它买食物、笔记本或是鞋子。”)”可知,项目补助的钱用来买食物、笔记本、鞋子,这些都属于生活必需品。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Such investments are paying off. Merlyn has become a symbol of hope for the entire community. His success has created a ripple effect among other children at the local school: If Merlyn did it, we can too. (这些投入正在得到回报。梅林成为整个社区的希望象征。他的成功在当地学校的其他孩子中间产生了连锁反应:梅林能做到,我们也可以。)”可知,梅林的成功产生连锁效应,当地其他孩子受到鼓舞,认为他能做到,自己也可以,激励了更多学生努力学习。
C
Today, it seems normal for children to play in playgrounds with adults watching over them. But a little over a century ago, childhood in America looked very different: children wandered the streets and fields freely, making up their own rules and settling their own conflicts with little adult involvement.
As industrialization and city growth sped up, however, the safety of children in crowded cities became a growing concern. The “playground movement” came into being. In 1885, Boston introduced the first “sand gardens” — special areas where children could play under adult watch. The idea spread quickly. By 1903, when New York City opened its first public playground, more than 2,000 children showed up on opening day.
Supporters held a core belief: “The playground of today is the republic(共和国) of tomorrow.” To them, with adults watching over and clear rules to follow, these spaces were more than just safe places; they were where children learned the discipline and cooperation that would serve them well as members of society.
Yet the movement carried a less visible cost. The playground drew a clear line on the map. Inside was safe, protected childhood; outside was danger and the disorderly adult world. The playground kept them safe, but it also separated them from the wider social world.
Once drawn, that line has never disappeared. Sociologists point out a central puzzle of modern childhood: we work harder than ever to protect children, yet we may be reducing the space they need to grow. As child development expert Lenore Skenazy puts it, it is through independent activity that children learn to assess risk, handle disagreements, and face troubles by themselves. As the boundaries of childhood grow tighter, we might ask: in protecting children from the unknown, are we also keeping them from growing up? Safety matters, but so does the chance to grow in the real world. The task, perhaps, is not to erase the line, but to learn where to draw it.
8. Which of the following best describes the childhood in America a century ago?
A. Risky and violent. B. Carefree and unhurried.
C. Wild but self-governing. D. Well-guided but restricted.
9. How did supporters view the playground movement?
A. It keeps the republic united. B. It eases the burden of parents.
C. It enriches children’s spare time. D. It helps develop children’s citizenship.
10. What can be inferred from Lenore Skenazy’s words?
A. Free-range children are neglected children.
B. Overprotected kids are underprepared kids.
C. A safe environment makes a happy childhood.
D. A child’s growth comes from a parent’s presence.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Great Revolution B. The Fenced-in Childhood
C. The Cost of Independent Play D. The Rise of Public Playgrounds
C 9. D 10. B 11. B
根据第一段“But a little over a century ago, childhood in America looked very different: children wandered the streets and fields freely, making up their own rules and settling their own conflicts with little adult involvement.(但一个多世纪以前,美国的童年截然不同:孩子们自由地在街巷与田野间游荡,自己制定规则,在几乎没有成人介入的情况下自行解决矛盾。)”
根据第三段“Supporters held a core belief: “The playground of today is the republic (共和国)of tomorrow.” To them, with adults watching over and clear rules to follow, these spaces were more than just safe places; they were where children learned the discipline and cooperation that would serve them well as members of society.(支持者秉持一个核心理念:“今日的游乐场,就是明日的共和国。”在他们看来,有成年人看护、有清晰的规则需要遵守,这些场地不只是安全的场所;在这里,孩子们学会自律与合作,而这些素养将帮助他们成长为合格的社会成员。)”可知,支持者认为游乐场运动有助于培养孩子的公民素养。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“As child development expert Lenore Skenazy puts it, it is through independent activity that children learn to assess risk, handle disagreements, and face troubles by themselves.(正如儿童发展专家勒诺・斯科纳兹所说:正是通过独立活动,孩子们才能学会评估风险、处理分歧,并且独自面对困难。)”
D
Every generation worries that the next is growing distant from classical culture. The proposed solutions are consistently the same: teach more history, assign more classics, build more museums and preserve more heritage. Yet, the anxiety never disappears.
Perhaps that is because we keep mistaking preservation for passing culture on. Culture survives not because it is protected, but because it is rediscovered. And rediscovery begins not with duty but with curiosity.
I learned this from a video game. As a child, I struggled through Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Years later, I found myself playing a strategy game set in the Three Kingdoms period. For the first time, history became immersive rather than instructional. Soon I was searching historical records, comparing fact with fiction, reading Records of the Three Kingdoms, and eventually writing a song about Sun Shangxiang.
That should tell us something. For decades, educators have debated how to convince young people that classical culture matters. Many creators have quietly found an answer: they stopped trying to persuade and started making culture appealing.
The medium is not the point. Curiosity is. This realization shaped my work when I began writing my first solo album (专辑), drawing inspiration from figures including Marco Polo. When I decided to write a song about him, I did not want to summarize his travels. Instead, I immersed myself in the details of his journey. Such creative choices do not explain history immediately. Actually, they invite listeners to wonder about their origins. Curiosity is more powerful than explanation because it drives people to explore.
The purpose of art is to inspire questions, not give instructions. That is how classical culture survives. Not by demanding respect, but by rewarding curiosity. Creators often speak about preserving tradition, but preservation is only the beginning. Our responsibility is not to seal the past behind glass cases, but to make it resonate (共鸣) in the present — through film, games, music, animation, short videos or whatever form allows a new generation to encounter it as something living rather than distant. The bridge matters more than the memorial.
12. How does culture survive according to the author?
A. Through regular history lectures. B. Through strict heritage protection.
C. Through new-angle exploration. D. Through frequent museum tours.
13. What was the main effect of the video game experience on the author?
A. He showed more interest in fiction. B. He chose to visit historic sites.
C. He became deeply engaged in history. D. He began to write history books.
14. Why did the author avoid summarizing Marco Polo’s travels in the song?
A. To keep it short and simple. B. To avoid describing complex contents.
C. To highlight his contributions. D. To make listeners curious about his journey.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Stimulate Curiosity to Build the Bridge B. Make Art a Gateway to Classical Culture
C. Rewrite History with Creative Works D. Preserve Heritage for Future Generations
C 13. C 14. D 15. A
根据第二段中的“Culture survives not because it is protected, but because it is rediscovered. And rediscovery begins not with duty but with curiosity. (文化的存续并非因为被保护,而是因为它被重新发现。而重新发现并非始于责任,而是始于好奇心。)”以及第五段提到的“Curiosity is more powerful than explanation because it drives people to explore. (好奇心比解释更强大,因为它驱使人们去探索。)”可知,作者认为文化通过激发好奇心、从新的角度去探索和重新发现来延续,而非单纯的保护或说教。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“For the first time, history became immersive rather than instructional. Soon I was searching historical records, comparing fact with fiction, reading Records of the Three Kingdoms, and eventually writing a song about Sun Shangxiang. (历史第一次变得身临其境,而非说教式的。很快,我开始查阅史料,比对史实与虚构,阅读《三国志》,最终还写了一首关于孙尚香的歌。)”可知,电子游戏的体验让作者从被动接受变为主动探索,深深地沉浸并参与到历史学习中。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“When I decided to write a song about him, I did not want to summarize his travels. Instead, I immersed myself in the details of his journey. Such creative choices do not explain history immediately. Actually, they invite listeners to wonder about their origins.
最后一段总结“Our responsibility is not to seal the past behind glass cases, but to make it resonate (共鸣) in the present — through film, games, music, animation, short videos or whatever form allows a new generation to encounter it as something living rather than distant. The bridge matters more than the memorial.(我们的责任不是将过去封存在玻璃展柜中,而是让它在当下产生共鸣——可以通过电影、游戏、音乐、动画、短视频,或是任何能让新一代人将其视为鲜活存在而非遥远历史的形式。桥梁比纪念碑更为重要。)”指出,传承古典文化的关键不是单纯的保护,而是激发人们的好奇心,搭建起当代人与古典文化之间的连接桥梁,让古典文化鲜活地存在于当下。A选项“Stimulate Curiosity to Build the Bridge (激发好奇心,搭建桥梁)”最能概括文章主旨。
Picture this: everyone’s gathered around the table, plates full, but half the family stares at glowing screens instead of each other’s faces. This scene plays out in countless homes across America every single night. What started as occasional phone checks has evolved into overall device dependency that follows families right to their dining table.
Remember when meals meant storytelling, laughter, and actual eye contact? ____16____ Before smartphones existed, families naturally gathered around the dining table to share their day, discuss plans, and enjoy each other’s company.
____17____ Research shows that the average American family spends less than 20 minutes eating dinner together, with much of that time spent interacting with screens. The cell phone transformed from a communication tool into a dining companion. ____18____ Unlike real conversation, screens demand attention without giving anything meaningful back to the family dynamic.
The physical health consequences are equally concerning. Mindless eating becomes the norm when attention splits between food and screens. People eat faster, chew less, and often consume more calories without realizing it. ____19____
Creating a phone-free zone can transform food time from a rushed obligation into genuine family time that everyone looks forward to. When screens disappear from the table, something magical happens: People start noticing each other again. ____20____ Even the food tastes better when everyone is fully engaged in what they’re eating.
A. Frankly, it’s not great company.
B. Those days weren’t that long ago.
C. That dinner wasn’t unique, and that’s the problem.
D. Dinner conversations teach children essential skills.
E. Technology has slowly but surely entered our dining spaces.
F. Conversations flow more naturally and laughter comes more easily.
G. This habit contributes to poor digestion and unhealthy eating patterns.
B 17. E 18. A 19. G 20. F

I must admit, I haven’t always been a lover of animals. Growing up, I distrusted animals greatly because I had experienced several frightening ____21____ with them. Once I was bitten by a rabbit, and another time a big dog ____22____ me while I rode my bike. Later, a stray dog chased our entire cross-country team on a hot training day. All those negative experiences carved a fixed ____23____ into my mind: all creatures, great and small, were no friends of mine.
After college, I settled in another city. ____24____, every woman I dated kept pets of some kind, and I even got bitten by a bird once. It felt like fate would never let me live ____25____ alongside any animal. Then I met Lisa. We fell in love, got married, and moved into our new home, where I suddenly shared space with her dog Bailey. Gradually, I began to ____26____ the idea of living with it.
Then a new member joined our family: our son Evan. One evening, while Evan was playing, he grabbed Bailey’s tail, but the annoyed dog paused and waited calmly until being released. Still, my old fears ____27____ so I suggested finding new homes for the dog, which sparked a fierce ____28____. After cooling down, Lisa reminded me that Bailey was already part of our family, and we would never ____29____.

Should we use AI to polish up our compositions?
Nowadays, with the rapid development of technology, a number of students turn to AI to polish up their English compositions. From my point of view, AI brings considerable benefits to our English writing .
For one thing, AI can efficiently spot grammar mistakes and polish awkward expressions, helping us learn more authentic ways of writing. For another, it provides instant feedback for our self-study. With its help, we can ease our fear of English writing and gradually build up our confidence.
To sum up, we should embrace new technology wisely. Properly used, AI will serve as a powerful helper in our writing practice.
Should we use AI to polish up our compositions?
With the rapid development of technology, numerous students depend on AI to polish up their English compositions. From my individual perspective, the drawbacks outweigh its benefits.
To begin with, the high efficiency of AI robs us of the valuable chance to reflect on our writings and weakens our willingness to revise them independently, leading to over-reliance in the long term. In addition, writing is meant to convey our true inner feelings. Compositions polished by AI may sound fancy in language but lack our genuine thoughts.
Therefore, we ought to improve our compositions through continuous practice rather than turn to AI for assistance.

Jade was born in China and relocated to America when she was barely a baby. Now a sixteen-year-old teenager raised entirely in the USA, she had grown accustomed to local lifestyles. Busy as they were, her parents never skipped the celebrations of traditional Chinese festivals. Still, Jade could never figure out what made these festivals so significant to them. To her, these festivals meant nothing but endless tiring chores, unfamiliar dishes that failed to suit her taste, and less time with her friends.
On the morning of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Jade’s mother got up very early and busied herself with preparations. Jade grabbed her backpack, eager to dash out and meet her friends. Just as she reached the door, Mom stopped her, hoping she could pitch in. Looking at all kinds of materials and the mooncake moulds spread out across the kitchen table, Jade rejected the appeal without hesitation. She complained that she had made plans with her friends long before and saw absolutely no sense in wasting her leisure time on such festival routines.
Mom dried her hands on her apron and drew Jade down to sit next to her. She didn’t blame her. Instead, she pulled an old photo album out of the kitchen cupboard. Inside were snapshots of her and Dad shortly after their arrival in America: the young couple beamed, holding mooncakes outside their tiny, shabby apartment.
In a soft, trembling voice, Mom explained that the festival represented far more than mooncakes and lights. Back in her childhood days in Guangzhou, her whole family would gather on the rooftop each Mid-Autumn night. They savored mooncakes, sipped fragrant tea and watched the huge, glowing full moon. Once, she had taken those warm moments for granted. But after being thousands of miles away from home, that very moon turned into an invisible thread tying her to her hometown. “We gaze up at the same moon as our relatives back in China. This festival holds our family bond unbroken,” she murmured.
Mom shut the photo album and gently laid her hand over Jade’s. “You are free to leave if you wish. Go enjoy yourself with your friends.” Jade stared hard at her mother, catching the faint glimmer of homesick sorrow in her eyes.

When night fell, all the preparations were completed.

Jade thought for a short time, and then put down her backpack. Though slightly reluctant, she rolled up her sleeves and threw herself into festival preparations with her parents. Awkwardly, she was clumsy at first and the mooncakes made by her turned out misshapen and looked strange. Under Mom’s patient guidance, she gradually mastered the skills of pressing mixtures into delicate moulds. What started as a burdensome task slowly sparked her enthusiasm. Mindful of every step, she grew increasingly skillful and laughter occasionally echoed through the kitchen.
When night fell, all the preparations were completed. Seated on the balcony, the whole family admired the brilliant full moon, tasted the homemade mooncakes and swapped touching stories about Mid-Autumn in China. To Jade’s amazement, the mooncakes carried an unexpected delicious flavor. It dawned on her that those once-annoying chores were far from meaningless. Instead of merely robbing her of fun with friends, the festival built a precious emotional bond linking her to her family and distant cultural roots.
