Nancy was a baby turtle (海龟). She was protected well by her parents on the beach where she was born. But as she grew older, she decided to see the world. She would have to get a tool to travel around, for turtles were very slow.
She asked her mother to buy her a moped (助力车) so that she could go off and discover new lands farther away. But Nancy’s mother said, “Certainly not! Mopeds are too dangerous for turtles.”
Nancy was unhappy about this, so she decided to look for a moped that had been thrown away. Finally, Nancy found what she was looking for. Without a second thought, she took it and went off to find another beach along the coast road. As she rode, she noticed that the moped was going very fast, and that it was getting more and more difficult to control it.
Suddenly, a bee flew into Nancy’s face, which made her fall onto the ground so heavily that she broke a leg. With great difficulty, Nancy went back home and shut herself up in her own room without saying anything.

Today we use Arabic numerals (0-9) almost everywhere. But these numbers were not invented by Arabs.
Long long ago, people in India created these number symbols. They also created the place-value system. It made writing big numbers much easier. Later, Arab businessmen and scholars learned this system from India. They brought the numbers to Europe. European people called them “Arabic numerals” because they got them from Arab people.
Before Arabic numerals arrived, Europeans used Roman numerals. Roman numerals use letters such as I, V, X. It was hard to do difficult maths with them. For example, it is not easy to calculate LXXIII minus XXXIX in Roman numerals. Slowly, Arabic numerals took the place of Roman numerals for counting and calculating.
Now Arabic numerals travel across the whole world. They help people do business, study science and record all kinds of data. Without them, our modern world would be very different.
( ) 29. Where were Arabic numerals first invented?
A. In Arabia. B. In India. C. In Europe. D. In China.
( ) 30. Who spread the number system to Europe?

C. It was hard to do challenging maths calculations.
D. People could not write small numbers.
( ) 32. What is the best title for the text?
A. The journey of Arabic numerals B. Different ways to count in Europe
C. Why Roman numerals disappear completely D. Great inventions from ancient India

From Moon to Mars, scientists are looking for water — the key to life. Recently, they have turned to Jupiter (木星)!
Jupiter is a gas giant (巨星). It doesn’t have an Earth-like surface. We can see strips (条纹) around it. They are actually cold, windy clouds.
On April 14, the European Space Agency’s spaceship, JUICE, successfully lifted off. JUICE, short for “Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer”, will collect data (数据) from Jupiter and its three natural satellites (卫星), Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
The three satellites are believed to have big oceans of liquid water (液态水) under their icy shells (壳). The water on them could be six times as much as the amount in Earth’s oceans. The major task will change our understanding of Jupiter, for example, whether there are habitable (可居住的) environments among those icy satellites or Jupiter.
In 1998, NASA’s Galileo spaceship found that Europa could shoot water as far as 160 kilometers into space. That gave scientists much courage to study Jupiter.
The oceans under these three satellites are likely to be tens of kilometers deep. But they are trapped under tens of kilometers of ice, making it difficult to study them Although JUICE cannot land on the surface, it has lots of high-tech equipment to study these three satellites’ environment.
( ) 33. What can we know about JUICE from the text?
A. It succeeded in landing on April 14.
B. It will become one of Jupiter’s satellites.
C. It got its name from what it looks like.
D. It will collect data from Jupiter and its satellites.
( ) 34. What is the purpose of JUICE’s major task?
A. To find out if Jupiter has living things similar to human beings.
B. To find out whether it is possible for life to live on the satellites.
C. To shoot water to the earth from Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
D. To test ways of keeping water on Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
( ) 35. What does the underlined word “trapped” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Kept B. Lost C. Moved D. Studied.
( ) 36. How does the writer feel about NASA’s study of Jupiter?
A. Hopeful B. Doubtful C. Uncertain D. Unknown.

During work hours in Becker’s bread shop, the kitchen is very quiet except the sound of the machine. The quiet environment is not the result of the strict rules, but because all the workers are deaf. They use sign language to communicate with each other from time to time.
Becker’s shop is in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It sells many kinds of German bread, cakes and coffee. It is very popular for the story of Becker who opened it.
Over twenty years ago, Becker and his wife heard about a Chinese public project. It provided language training for the disabled children, but it was short of trainers in Changsha. So they came in 2002 with a common wish to do something meaningful in life.
In Changsha, together with other Chinese trainers, they helped disabled children improve their hearing and language pronunciation. Every little progress each child experienced was a great encouragement to them, and they achieved their goal in life.
After ten years of working for this project, they found that the disabled adults couldn’t be independent because they had no professional skills. Then Becker and his wife set up a bread shop to teach these people how to make bread. With their help, all of them were able to live on their own.
Luckily, Becker and his wife have also got the support from the local government. More people join them and understand that disabled people can work as well as others when they have the same chances.
61. Why is Becker’s shop quiet during work hours?
62. What did Becker and his wife help disabled children to do?
63. Who gave support to Becker and his wife?
64. What do you usually do to help the people in need? (write 30 words or more)
