On a hot summer afternoon, cities and towns are usually hotter than the nearby countryside areas. This is not just a feeling. Some cities can be as much as 7℃ hotter. Scientists call this the “urban heat island” effect
This effect is closely connected with the materials used in city buildings, which usually take in large amounts of heat from sunlight during the day. Instead of cooling quickly after sunset, these materials slowly give out the stored heat back into the air. As a result, cities remain warm for a lot longer. In certain situations, high temperatures can even be deadly.
To cut urban heat, many cities have turned to trees, which work like natural air conditioners in two main ways. First, they provide shade (树荫), preventing streets and buildings from heating up too much. Second, trees cool the air through a process called transpiration—water inside the leaves enters the air, lowering temperatures nearby.
To understand how effective trees really are, researchers studied air temperature and tree cover data (数据) from nearly 9,000 cities and the findings were surprising. Trees reduce the “urban heat island” effect by almost 50% all over the world. Since cities are usually 1 ~ 3℃ hotter than nearby countryside areas, trees can lower temperatures by about 0.5~1.5℃ in many places, which can have an influence on city heat during the long hot summer.
However, scientists warn that planting trees alone cannot completely solve the problem. Even with large planting projects, urban trees may cut down only a bit of heat by the middle of this century. Because of this, experts believe cities need more solutions. For example, reflective building materials can help. At the same time, ways of cutting greenhouse gas (气体) remain necessary.
Trees are powerful and valuable. They cool cities, improve air quality and make urban life more comfortable. But in a warming world, they work best as part of a larger plan rather than as the only answer.
21. What makes cities hotter than countryside areas?
A. Water pollution. B. Urban buildings. C. Strong sunlight. D. Waste materials.
22. What is paragraph 3 mainly about regarding trees?
A. How they cut greenhouse gas. B. How they clear air in cities.
C. How they cool the nearby areas. D. How they protect the environment.
23. Why does the writer list numbers in paragraph 4?
A. To collect the data of tree cover. B. To show the influence of trees.
C. To praise researchers’ hard work. D. To make predictions of the effect.
24. What does the writer suggest in the last two paragraphs?
A. More plans are needed to cut heat.
B. Trees help to solve every problem.
C. Experts have done enough research.
D. Green spaces will increase greatly.
25. Which section of a website is the text probably taken from?
A. Travel. B. Technology. C. Custom. D. Environment.

Which is better?
Clearly, the number one reason that people choose to work with a GPS unit is the feeling of freedom. With a GPS unit in your pocket or car, it’s easy for you to find your way. If you do get lost, then the GPS will quickly find routes (路线) for you.
Besides, having a GPS unit is like bringing every single map of the world along with you! It knows where famous buildings are and the best routes to them. And you will always know exactly where you are, down to the mile.
However, GPS has some shortcomings as well. For example, a GPS unit may take you into a traffic jam, go offline if a satellite (卫星) fails, or run out of batteries (电池). Some GPS units may even take you around in circles, wasting your time.
While GPS has its draws, many people still prefer traditional maps. They don’t require any power, so people don’t need to worry about getting lost after running out of batteries. In this case, old-fashioned maps seem to be the winner for remote travel.
Maps are also easy to draw on, making it effortless to mark destinations (目的地) or plan routes. You can even give the map away or let someone borrow it without fear of losing an expensive device.
Even so, traditional maps also have some problems. They can get outdated, be easily broken, and go missing unexpectedly. And people need to bring their own light source and plan routes themselves.
In a word, both GPS and paper maps have their pros and cons (利弊), so it’s up to you to decide which method is better to use. No matter which one you choose, be sure to travel safely and enjoy the trip.
GPS&Maps
● They provide the sense of freedom.
● They help find your way ____41____.
Pros
● They don’t need batteries.
● They are easy to draw on.
● They cost ____42____ than GPS units.
● They sometimes give wrong ways.
● They may break down in some cases.
Cons

Both of them have good and bad sides, so choose what suits you ____44____.
5. If you want to find your way, which do you prefer, GPS or paper maps? Why?

The Olympic champion (冠军) with a heart for China
The Paris 1924 Olympics witnessed many sports stars. However, for Chinese people, the biggest star might be a British athlete — Eric Liddell.
Eric Liddell was born in Tianjin in 1902. At the age of five, Liddell was sent back to the UK for education and he showed great sporting talent at a young age. After Liddell attended the University of Edinburgh in 1920, he began to win many awards in national competitions.
At the Paris 1924 Summer Olympics, he signed up for the 200m and 400m races, which were not his primary focus at first. However, Liddell not only won third place in the 200m, but also broke the world record in the 400m and won gold. It is truly amazing!
Flowers, applause and honours followed. However, Liddell then made a surprising decision: he returned to his birthplace, Tianjin, and settled (定居) there after getting a degree in science at the age of 23. Back in Tianjin, Liddell worked as a science and PE teacher at a school. To this day, many people are still confused by his choice.
By 1941, life in China had become dangerous because of the Japanese threat. Liddell, however, didn’t choose to escape but stayed to work as a medical worker in a village in Hebei, North China. There he provided medical treatment for suffering locals.
In 1943, he was captured (抓捕) by the Japanese army and sent to a concentration camp (集中营). There, Liddell taught science and organized sporting activities to encourage other prisoners. Sadly, in early 1945, Liddell passed away due to illness.

Cons
● They can be outdated, broken and ____43____ easily.
Both of them have good and bad sides, so choose what suits you ____44____.
5. If you want to find your way, which do you prefer, GPS or paper maps? Why?
______________________________________________45______________________________________________
41. quickly
42. less 43. lost
44. best 45. I prefer GPS. Because it can help me find routes quickly and I can always know exactly where I am./I prefer paper maps. Because they don’t need batteries and I can mark destinations easily on them.
原文第一段“If you do get lost, then the GPS will quickly find routes (路线) for you.”,GPS能快速帮你找到路,修饰动词/动词短语find your way要用副词,quickly是副词,意为“快速地”。
原文第五段“You can even give the map away or let someone borrow it without fear of losing an expensive device.”,GPS是昂贵设备,对比可知地图花费“更少”,后面有than,用little的比较级less, cost less表示“花费更少”。
原文第六段“They can get outdated, be easily broken, and go missing unexpectedly.”,纸质地图会过时、容易破损、意外丢失。句子是并列结构can get..., be..., and...,表格中已经给出can be outdated, broken and,后面填lost。
原文最后一段“both GPS and paper maps have their pros and cons, so it’s up to you to decide which method is better to use.”,由你来决定哪一种方式更好,转化表达就是“选择最适合你的”,suit sb best是固定搭配,表示“最适合某人”。
I prefer GPS. Because it can help me find routes quickly and I can always know exactly where I am./I prefer paper maps. Because they don’t need batteries and I can mark destinations easily on them.

It gives strength to generations to come.

第四段明确指出Liddell做出了一个令人惊讶的决定:“he returned to his birthplace, Tianjin, and settled there after getting a degree in science at the age of 23”,随后第四段末尾提到“many people are still confused by his choice”。
画线句“虽然他已与世长辞,但他的精神和故事流传至今”中,“虽然”可用“Although”引导让步状语从句,“与世长辞”可译为“has passed away”,“精神和故事”译为“his spirit and story”,“流传至今”可译为“live on to this day”或“have been passed down to this day”。故参考译文为“Although he has passed away, his spirit and story live on to this day.”
第三段明确提到“Liddell not only won third place in the 200m, but also broke the world record in the 400m and won gold”。
倒数第二段明确指出“There, Liddell taught science and organized sporting activities to encourage other prisoners”。
