二、阅读理解(39分)
Death Valley is the hottest and the driest place in North America. Death Valley isn’t an easy place to live in. It gets less than two feet of rain a year and it’s hot, too. In July, temperature often reaches over 46℃. There is even a lake that has turned into salt crystals (晶体). But it is cold at night. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will turn into very thin ice. Then the strong wind—like a large hand—can move the rocks along the icy ground. That is why the rocks can “walk” on their own in Death Valley.
Although the weather condition in Death Valley is terrible, there is still filled with lives. Nothing can stop plants and animals from making it their home. People have found more than 1,000 kinds of plants there. It also has 51 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物), 6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren’t all small, either.
Finding water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives here. Some plants have roots (根部) that go fifty feet under the ground to find water. Kangaroo rats get the water they need from flowers.
Death Valley really creates a lot of surprising things!

13. From the passage, we can infer (推断) that ________.
A. the writer dislikes Death Valley B. some animals are large in Death Valley
C. the plants do not have long roots D. Rocks sometimes move in the afternoon
14. What is the best title of this passage?
A. The hard life in Death Valley B. A dangerous place—Death Valley
C. Moving rocks in Death Valley D. The facts about Death Valley
What will the car be like in the future? Maybe we can sit in a car that can drive itself
About 40 years ago, scientists from the United States started to make self-driving cars (无人驾驶汽车). The most famous one was made by Google (谷歌) in 2009. There are cameras and radars (雷达) on the top of the car. They let the computer in the car draw a 3D map of the environment (环境). Chinese scientists have also successfully (成功地) made a self-driving car. The car made a trip from Changsha to Wuhan.
Is a self-driving car safe? A recent ( 最近的) study shows that robots (机器人) make safer drivers than people. If only 10% of cars on the street are self-driving, they will save 1,000 lives (生命) every year. If 90% of vehicles (交通工具) are self-driving, 21,700 lives will be saved (被救) a year. But a self-driving car is expensive and each costs about $100,000. So it is impossible to be very popular in the near future.
15. What’s on the top of the self-driving car?
A Radios B. Cameras C. Radars D. C&D
16. How much does a self-driving car cost?
A. $100,000 B. $1,000 C. $21,700 D. $10,000

In Brazil and Indonesia, the number of people living in the rainforest (雨林) is rising, so the rainforest itself is becoming smaller.
During the 20th century, people cut down lots of trees in the rainforest. More and more people in Brazil and Indonesia moved into rainforest areas to find land for living. Local farmers cut down trees to grow crops (庄稼). Large companies (公司) also moved into the rainforest to develop their factories.
The problem is that the area of the rainforest is becoming smaller and smaller. Scientists say that destroying (破坏) the rainforest is harming the earth and should be stopped. But why? Rainforest plants help to clean the air. What’s more, different kinds of rainforest plants can be used to produce (生产) useful medicine and may be the key to solving serious problems.
Then how can people in Brazil and Indonesia solve the problem? Governments can make some rules to protect their forests. Companies can provide jobs elsewhere (在别处), so that fewer people have to live and work in the rainforest. Governments should encourage farmers to plant crops in certain areas, and this helps to stop the soil from being washed away and produce better crops.
Many plants and animals that live in the rainforest can’t be found anywhere else in the world. It is important to make sure that these forests are used well and protected by people.
18. Why is the rainforest becoming smaller in Brazil and Indonesia?
A. Because people plant less trees.
B. Because many plants are eaten by animals.

C. The Ways to Plant Crops in the Rainforest
D. The Problem of the Rainforest and Ways to Solve It
A lot of animals travel from one place to another. We call this migration.
In Africa, large animals, like elephants and zebras, migrate to find food and water. They usually follow the same ways every year.
A lot of birds migrate to find food and better weather, too. They are usually birds that eat insects. They spend the summer in northern Europe, because there are lots of insects there. In the winter there aren't any insects, so the birds fly south to southern Europe and Africa.
Some insects migrate, too. In North America, millions of monarch butterflies fly south to spend the winter in Mexico, California and Florida, where it's warmer. They travel 50-65 km each day and they travel about 1,125 km.
Some fish migrate to breed (繁殖). Salmon (鲑鱼) can swim over 20,000 km in their life. They are born in rivers in Ireland, Scotland and other places in northern Europe. The young fish swim down the river to the sea and into the Atlantic Ocean. They live in the ocean until they are adults. Then they return to the river where they were born. They lay their eggs in the river and then they usually die. Salmon do this, because their eggs are safer in the river. Other fish can't eat them.
Arctic terns (北极燕鸥) travel the furthest when they migrate. They spend the summer in the Arctic, but when winter comes they fly to the Antarctic, because it's summer there. The next year they fly back to the Arctic again. In one year these small birds travel 36, 000km from one end of the earth to the other and back again. Nobody knows how they do it.
23. According to the passage, monarch butterflies in North America migrate to_________.
A. find insects B. look for water C. find better weather D. produce young

A. they won't be eaten by other big fish
B. they want to lay eggs in a safer place
C. they are getting ready to die there
D. they want to go where they grew up
25. Which of the following is true about animals' migration?
A. Elephants in Africa usually travel the same way each year.
B Most birds fly to southern Europe and Africa in summer.
C. Some insects travel 1, 125 km each day.
D. Salmon swim 20, 000 km each year.
26. The example of Arctic terns in the last paragraph is used mainly to show _________.
A. the distance of migration B. the purpose of migration

四、任务型阅读(26分)
New York is a very large city with about 8 million(八百万) people. How do so many people move on their way to work or school? In New York you can travel by subway(地铁), bus, taxi and private(私人的) car.
The subway runs on the railway lines(轨道线) under the city. Travelling by subway is the fastest way to get around the city. The second way to travel around the city is by public bus(公共汽车). It is a slower way to travel. This is because the traffic is very heavy.
You can also travel around the city by taxi. This is very expensive , but the taxi will take you to the very place you want to go to. If the traffic is heavy, the taxi will be slow, too.
During the mornings and afternoons, there is the “rush hour”. This is the time when the traffic is very heavy with people going to and from work. The last way to get around New York is using your own private car. It is not easy because you will probably be driving during the “rush hour”. The best time to travel around the city is from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., because it isn’t the “rush hour”.

Sometimes, kids don’t think their parents are fair to them. When you want to dress in a modern way, your mum won’t allow you to wear a miniskirt. When you are making a phone call, they will ask who you’re speaking to. Those make teenagers unhappy, even less patient. Sometimes it seems that you’re not as close to your parents as you used to be. How can you change such a situation?
Both parents and children have needs. They need to feel they are important and loved. You should tell your parents your needs, and find out what their needs are. Maybe you can think of a way to make all of you happy.
When you think “my parents don’t want me to have any fun”, it usually means your parents want you to be happy. You can make time to talk. To get your parents to know what you’re doing and what you want to do, you could talk about your school life now and your dreams for the future. It helps your parents know more about you. You can also keep a diary to help you understand more about yourself and your feelings. It’s necessary to show your parents you are growing up. Wash your own clothes and help around the house. Your parents will feel you are no longer a child.
If you follow these steps, you will be able to break down the walls between you and your parents. Your home will be a happier place.
