Promise to be there for all doctor’s visits whether she has a disease or needs a regular medical check-up. Most mothers always say there is no need, but another set of eyes and ears is always a good idea at a doctor’s visit. The best part? This one is free. Gift No.2 Help your mother organize all of her medical records, which include the test results and medical information. Put them all in one place. Be sure to make a list of all of her medicines and what time she takes them. “Having all this information in one place could end up saving your mother’s life,” Dr. Marie Savard said. Gift No.3 Enough sleep is connected with general health conditions. “Buy your mother cotton sheets and comfortable pillows to encourage better sleep,” Savard said. “We know that good sleep is very important to our health.” Gift No.4 Some gift companies such as Presents for Purpose allow you to pay it forward this Mother’s Day by picking gifts, 10 percent of whose price you pay goes to a charity (慈善机构). Gift givers can choose from a wide variety of useful but inexpensive things — many of which are “green” — and then choose a meaningful charity from a list. When your mother gets the gift she will be told that she has helped the chosen charity. 21. What are you advised to do for your mother at doctor’s visits? A. To take notes. B. To be with her. C. To buy medicines. D. To give her gifts. 22. Where can you find an idea for gifts to improve your mother’s sleep? A. In Gift No.1. B. In Gift No.2. C. In Gift No.3. D. In Gift No.4. 23. Buying gifts from Presents for Purpose allows mothers to ________. A. enjoy good sleep B. be well-organized C. get extra support D. give others help B To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades, and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, school is very different. Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want. There are no teachers — only “staff members”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. You do not need to say to a three-year-old, “Go explore your environment. You can’t stop them!” says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning.” At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing! The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each — even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more. When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist. 24. What is the main topic of the article? A. An unusual school. B. Children’s hobbies. C. A school without rules. D. Education in the US. 25. What does the school believe? A. Teachers cannot teach children well. B. Children learn best when they do what they want to do. C. Learning is for adults — children should only play. D. Children should only learn about one thing at a time. 26. What does Daniel Greenberg say about three-year-olds? A. They love learning. B. They are very naughty. C. They want to be outside all the time. D. They are too young to learn anything. 27. Who has the most power in the school meetings? A. The older children have more power than the younger children. B. A child has more power than an adult. C. The younger children have more power than the older children. D. Everybody has equal power. C Teenagers, easily attracted by cool flavors and fashionable packaging, are the biggest group buying sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Most of them regard these cold drinks as a necessary part of daily relaxation, never realizing that frequent drinking has long-lasting bad effects on their physical and mental growth. The harm goes far beyond simple tooth decay. The WHO says free sugar should account for less than 5% of daily energy intake, about 25 grams for teenagers. But a common 500ml cup of milk tea or a normal bottle of cola has more than 35 grams of added sugar. Just one cup is enough to go over the daily limit advised by the WHO. Unlike solid sweet food, sugar in drinks is taken in quickly and cannot send fullness signals to the brain. As a result, teenagers who often drink SSBs get extra energy without eating less other food. A 2024 JAMA Pediatrics study shows this habit increases teens’ risk of obesity by 55%. What’s worse, frequent changes in blood sugar put much stress on organs that control blood sugar, raising the risk of type 2 diabetes (糖尿病). Recent medical studies also find there is a close link between drinking too many sugary drinks and teenagers’ mental health. A large research following more than 120,000 teenagers found that those drinking sugary drinks every day have a 34% higher chance of developing anxiety, compared with teens who seldom drink them. Experts explain that frequent rises and falls of blood sugar upset the natural balance of brain chemicals that control moods. This makes young people get angry easily and become sensitive in feelings. Many teenagers wrongly think regular exercise can make up for too much sugar taken in. However, European experiments show that even teens who keep exercising as required cannot stop putting on weight slowly because of liquid sugar. Besides, SSBs supplant nutrient-rich drinks such as milk and clean water. This causes teens to fail to get enough nutrients needed for bone growth. Drinking once in a while will not cause serious harm. But the combined bad influence of too much sugar and possible mental problems creates a big public health problem. Understanding these hidden dangers helps teenagers make wise choices. Using plain water or fresh whole fruits instead of sugary drinks can help teens keep steady blood sugar and healthy physical growth. 28. What can we learn about a single serving of common sugar-sweetened drinks? A. It supplies less than 25 grams of free sugar as WHO suggested. B. Its sugar content alone breaks teens’ ideal daily sugar limit. C. It contains fewer calories than ordinary solid desserts. D. It creates a strong feeling of fullness after drinking. 29. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3? A. The standard of healthy sugar intake for teenagers. B. Effective ways to ease teenagers’ anxiety symptoms. C. The connection between sugary drinks and teen anxiety. D. Long-term research methods for mental health surveys. 30. What does the underlined word “supplant” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean? A. take the place of. B. wash away thoroughly. C. add extra amounts of. D. store up for later use. 31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. How to Build a Scientific Teenage Fitness Plan. B. Sweet Drinks: Hidden Threats to Teens’ Healthy Living. C. WHO Guidelines on Daily Sugar Consumption Standards. D. Mental Problems Caused by Unbalanced Teen Diets D Lego is considering a brick (积木) rental plan in an attempt to cut down on plastic waste. The Danish toymaker has promised to make all its bricks from sustainable (可持续的) sources by 2030 and is investing significant resources into finding alternatives. Tim Brooks, vice-president responsible for sustainability, said the company was “totally open” to the idea of a product rental plan but admitted that lost pieces could produce a significant problem. “What are the chances of giving them to an eight-year-old child and getting them all back again?” Mr. Brooks added. “There is a lot of technical thinking that needs to be done. We are right at beginning of that.” Mr. Brooks said Lego was exploring several ideas with a view to producing the highest value from products while consuming the least amount of resources. He said many would “probably never see the light of day” and there was no current plan to try out a rental plan. Lego has come under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint among growing international alarm about the impact of plastic waste on the environment. It produces 19 billion pieces per year — 36,000 a minute — that are made entirely of plastic while much of the inside packaging is also plastic. So far, the only breakthrough has been the development of a line of bricks made from plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane. The green trees, plants and flowers were first included in Lego sets late last year but make up only 1% — 2% of the total amount of plastic elements produced. Henrik Niekson, a production supervisor (主管) in Lego’s factory, said last year: “We need to learn again how to do this.” Lego reportedly releases around a million tons of carbon dioxide each year, with about 75% coming from raw materials that go into factories. The company has invested more than £100,000,000 and hired 100 people to research non-plastic alternatives. It is aiming to keep all of its packaging out of landfill by 2025. 32. Lego is making great efforts to ________. A. promote its brick rental plan B. raise its production efficiency C. explore ways to reduce plastic waste D. develop new products 33. According to Mr. Brooks, Lego’s brick rental plan________. A. is well under way B. has a long way to go C. is totally useless D. goes against Lego’s interest 34. The writer tells of Lego’s stress of reducing plastic waste by means of ________. A. figures B. examples C. comparison D. classification 35. What is Lego’s attitude towards developing non-plastic alternatives? A. Uncertain. B. Determined. C. Negative. D. Li Ming, a freshman in senior high school, sat alone in the empty classroom, staring at the test paper on his desk. The red marks on it seemed to be laughing at him. 52 out of 150. It was his third math test in a month, and his third failure. He thought about his middle school days, when he used to be one of the top students in his class. His teachers always praised him, and his parents often showed off his grades to their friends. But now, everything had changed. The math problems were much harder. The other students seemed to understand everything so quickly. He felt like he was falling behind more and more each day. Li Ming put his head down on the desk and closed his eyes. He remembered how excited he had been on the first day of high school. He had promised his mother that he would study hard and get into a good university. But now, that promise felt like a joke. Maybe he was just not smart enough for high school. Maybe he should give up his dream of becoming an engineer. Just then, the classroom door opened. It was Mr. Zhang, his math teacher. Mr. Zhang was a kind man in his fifties, with glasses and a warm smile. He walked over to Li Ming and sat down beside him. “I saw your paper, Li Ming,” Mr. Zhang said softly. “Do you want to tell me what’s going on?” Li Ming hesitated for a moment. Then, all his feelings came out like a flood. He told Mr. Zhang about his frustration, his fear of falling behind, and how he had lost all his confidence. Mr. Zhang listened patiently. When Li Ming finished, Mr. Zhang said, “Let me tell you a secret. When I was your age, I failed my math test too. In fact, I failed three times in a row.” Li Ming looked up in surprise. “Really? But you are a math teacher now!” 注意:1、续写词数应为150词左右(两段共计); 2、请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Mr. Zhang smiled and took out an old, yellow notebook from his bag. It’s really annoying. But remember, you’re unique and have your own shining points. Here are some suggestions. First, have an open talk with your parents, telling them how you feel. Second, focus on your own progress rather than others’ achievements. This can boost your confidence. Don’t be discouraged. Just be yourself. Yours, Li Hua 67【参考答案】 Mr. Zhang smiled and took out an old, yellow notebook from his bag. Inside were detailed error notes and daily learning plans he had made in high school. He told Li Ming that failure never meant incompetence, but rather revealed his weaknesses. Many high school students struggled with math at first, and progress always came gradually rather than overnight. He encouraged Li Ming to face his mistakes bravely, sort out confusing knowledge points, and never doubt his own ability. Warmth spread through Li Ming’s heart, and he regained his fading confidence. From that day on, Li Ming did something different every day after school. He no longer felt frustrated or discouraged. Instead, he sorted out incorrect math questions carefully every day, reviewed key knowledge regularly and asked the teacher for help with difficult problems in time. Bit by bit, his math foundation became solid, and his problem-solving skills improved greatly. Months later, Li Ming achieved a satisfying score in the final math test. He finally understood that true growth lies in persisting through difficulties rather than fearing temporary failure. 原文填空: 68. potential 69. are responsible for 70. well-rounded 71. calm down 72. None of the group has much experience of cooperating on projects, but we spent some time discussing how to go about it and worked out what seemed a useful approach, but it seems that Jane and I are the only ones actually following the plan. This means that we’ve fallen behind our schedule. A: I see, and that’s tricky. B: Yes, it is. We felt that the targets had been set, so we’d all know what to deal with, but looking back, we probably should have really specified individual responsibilities from the beginning.
