The population dropped by more than 50 percent.
drop 是"降",by 才是"降了多少"的钥匙:dropped by more than 50 percent 是"降了五成以上",dropped to 50 percent 才是"降到五成"。
· The population dropped by 50,000.(减少了 5 万,by 后接差额)
· The population dropped to 50,000.(减少到 5 万,to 后接终点)
Tibetan antelopes; a herd of graceful animals; on the plains of Xizang, Xinjiang and Qinghai; habitat
Watching them move slowly across the green grass, I'm struck by their beauty.
hunt... illegally; valuable fur; make profits; habitats were becoming smaller; threats
They were hunted, illegally, for their valuable fur.
place... under national protection; watch over day and night; keep safe from attacks; bridges and gates were added
Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night.
the population has recovered; downgrade from Endangered to Near Threatened; exist in harmony with nature
The measures were effective. The population has recovered.
The animals are in danger. We must protect them.
The Tibetan antelopes were hunted illegally for their valuable fur, and the population dropped by more than 50 percent. The government placed them under national protection.

1. endangered species
The Tibetan antelope was downgraded from Endangered to Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List in June 2021.
a species / this species 后谓语用单数;these species / many species 后谓语用复数。
Many species is endangered.(many species 后谓语用复数 are)
Many species ______ (be) at risk of extinction.
【答案】are
2. under national protection
In order to save this species from extinction, the Chinese government placed it under national protection.
限制:under protection 是固定搭配,介词不换成 in / with;place... under protection 的宾语是被保护对象。
错句:The government placed the antelope in national protection.(介词应为 under)
The reserve was placed ______ national protection.(填入一个适当的词)
【答案】under
【解析】under national protection 为固定搭配,介词用 under,不换 in / with。
3. watch over... day and night
Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night.
Volunteers looked after the antelopes day and night to keep them safe from attacks.(语境偏"警戒守护",watched over 更准)
The volunteers ______ the injured bird until it could fly again.(填入一个适当的词)
【答案】looked after
4. keep... safe from 使……免于
例:... to keep them safe from attacks.
接动名词多用于被动意义,如 keep them safe from being attacked。
The fence keeps the antelopes safe for wolves.("免于危险源"用 from,不用 for)
【答案】from
【解析】keep... safe from 为固定结构,from 后接危险源 attacks。
5. save... from extinction
In order to save this species from extinction, the Chinese government placed it under national protection.
接动作用动名词被动式,如 save him from being killed。
错句:We must save the species from extinct.(from 后接名词 extinction)
In order to save this species ______ extinction, the government took measures.(填入一个适当的词)
【答案】from
6. exist in harmony with nature
Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we stop being a threat to wildlife and to our planet.
(补充:Only 修饰主语时不倒装,如 Only he can help us。)
错句:Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature we can stop being a threat.(未倒装)
Only when the hunt was banned ______ (do) the elephants return to these hills.
【答案】did
第一组 die out / die away / die off
错句:The sound of the wind died out at midnight.
The sound of the wind died away at midnight. / Without protection, this species may die out.
Without protection, this species may die ______.(填入一个适当的词)
【答案】out
The government restored the antelope population.
restore 强调人为修复受损对象,常接 habitat / forest / building / order,或 restore the population to 70,000。
The antelope population has recovered. Volunteers restored the damaged habitat.
The antelope population has ______ (recover) to over 70,000.
第三组 protect... from / prevent... from
错句:The reserve protects illegal hunting in this area.
The reserve protects the antelopes from illegal hunting. / Laws prevent people from hunting them.
Laws prevent people ______ hunting the antelopes.(填入一个适当的词)
【答案】from
The new mines threaten to the camels.
The new mines threaten the camels. / The new mines are a threat to the camels.
New mines are a ______ (threaten) to the camels.
The species is in danger of extinct.
The species is in danger of extinction. / The species is endangered.
The species is in danger of ______ (extinct).
【答案】extinction
【解析】in danger of 后接名词;extinct 是形容词,名词形式为 extinction。
第六组 raise / rise
错句:The number has raised to 900.
The number has risen to 900. / They raised awareness of wildlife protection.
The number of camels has ______ (rise) to around 900.
drop by 50 percent 是"降了 50%",剩余是原数 50%;drop to 50 percent 是"降到原数的 50%"——百分比语境下两者结果相同,但 by 后是减量、to 后是终点。
dropped by 50,000
dropped to 50,000
recovered to 70,000
increased / rose by 70,000
措施动词常是 set up、place... under protection、watch over、pass laws、raise awareness;主体常是 the government、volunteers、local people。"
S/U reserve(set up a reserve)、U/N protection(under national protection)
Tibetan antelopes are a species...
habitat / endangered
The population dropped by more than 50 percent...
threat / illegal hunting
The government has placed them under national protection...
measures / watch over
However, the threats have not yet disappeared...
still worried / new mines
Volunteers watch over the animals day and night...
keep safe / raise awareness
Good morning, everyone. I am from the school Wildlife Protection Club. Today I would like to tell you something about the Tibetan antelope. In the 1980s and 1990s, the antelope population dropped by more than 50 percent, because hunters were shooting them for their valuable fur. Luckily, things have changed since then. The government has placed the antelope under national protection and has set up more than 30 nature reserves. Volunteers like us watch over the animals day and night and try to raise awareness of wildlife protection among local people. As a result, the population has recovered to over 70,000. However, we should not stop here—the threats to the animal have not yet disappeared.
1. How much did the antelope population drop in the 1980s and 1990s?
A. More than 50 percent.
B. More than 15 percent.
C. More than 70 percent.
【答案】A
【解析】原文 dropped by more than 50 percent,与 A 一致。
2. What has the government done to protect the antelope?
A. It has moved the antelopes into zoos.
B. It has allowed hunting again.
C. It has set up more than 30 nature reserves.
【答案】C
【解析】修订后原文明确为政府主动行为 "The government has... set up more than 30 nature reserves",选项 C 与其一致,主体判断严谨。
3. What is the speaker's attitude towards the present situation?
A. Proud but cautious.
B. Disappointed.
C. Indifferent.
【答案】A
【解析】Luckily 与 the population has recovered 先给积极面,However 之后 threats... have not yet disappeared 转谨慎。积极叠加谨慎,即 A 项 proud but cautious。
W: Mr. Lee, I heard you just came back from the bird protection station. How long did you stay there?
M: For two weeks. We counted the birds there—the number has dropped by about 20 percent since last year.
W: That's sad. What caused it?
M: Mainly the use of pesticides on nearby farms. Luckily, the local government has set up a new reserve, and volunteers will watch over the birds during the winter.
W: What can we students do to help?
M: You can raise money for the reserve and tell more people about the birds. But remember—don't get too close to them when you watch, because birds are easily frightened.
4. How much has the number of birds dropped since last year?
A. By about 10 percent.
B. By about 20 percent.
C. By about 40 percent.
【答案】B
【解析】原文 the number has dropped by about 20 percent since last year,by 后接差额。
5. What does the man remind the students to do?
A. Watch the birds from a distance.
B. Feed the birds in the winter.
C. Count the birds every week.
【答案】A
【解析】But remember 之后 don't get too close 才是真实提醒,选项 A 是"远距离观赏"的转述。
用 by 或 to 填空。
1. The population dropped ______ 50 percent. 【答案】by
2. The number recovered ______ 70,000. 【答案】to
3. The population dropped ______ 50,000. 【答案】by
4. The number rose ______ 900. 【答案】to
5. The species decreased ______ 30 percent. 【答案】by
用本讲词块填空,必要时变化形式:endangered species / save... from extinction / under national protection / watch over / raise awareness of / take effective measures / species / keep... safe from / only 倒装 / rise
1. The Tibetan antelope was once a(n) ______.
【答案】endangered species
2. In order to ______ this species ______ extinction, the government placed it ______ national protection.
【答案】save; from extinction; under national protection
【解析】三空构成"目的—手段"链条:save... from extinction 表目的,under national protection 表手段。
3. In the 1990s, volunteers ______ the antelopes day and night.
【答案】watched over
【解析】In the 1990s 是过去时间标志,用过去式 watched over。
4. They try to ______ wildlife protection among local people.
【答案】raise awareness of
5. The government has ______ to protect the animals.
【答案】taken effective measures
6. Many ______ are at risk of extinction.
7. The Tibetan antelope has long been ______ national protection.
【答案】under
8. Volunteers keep the newborn antelopes safe ______ wolves.
【答案】from
【解析】keep... safe from 固定结构,from 后接危险源。
9. Only when we protect their habitats ______ animals live in safety.
【答案】can
10. Thanks to the new reserve, the number of Tibetan antelopes has ______ sharply.
【答案】risen
【解析】空前 has 提示现在完成时,the number of...
1. Their habitats were becoming smaller ______ more roads and railways spread into the plain.(填入一个适当的词)
【答案】as
2. The measures were ______ (effect), and the population has recovered.
3. Rangers ______ (watch over) the reserve all night to guard against poachers.
【答案】watched over
4. ______ (fortunate), the population began to rise again.
Fortunately
5. Only when the habitat was restored ______ (do) the species begin to recover.
【答案】did
6. The government has passed laws ______ (prevent) illegal hunting.
【答案】to prevent
7. The number of wild elephants in the area ______ (rise) to nearly 400 today.
【答案】has risen
8. However, the threats ______ (not disappear) yet.
Passage The Chiru Comes Back
On the high plains of Xizang, a quiet comeback is underway. In the 1990s, Tibetan antelopes, or chiru, were hunted illegally for their valuable underfur, and the population dropped by more than 50 percent. At its lowest, fewer than 70,000 animals remained.
Things began to change when the Changtang National Nature Reserve was set up and the species was placed under national protection. More than 30 reserves now shelter the antelopes. Volunteers and rangers watch over them day and night, keeping them safe from attacks and from roads that cut across their migration routes. Bridges and gates have been added so that the animals can cross safely.
The measures were effective. By 2026, the population has recovered to over 300,000, and it was downgraded from Endangered to Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List in June 2021. Yet the old hunters have not all disappeared. New mines and railways still threaten the habitat, and climate change is making the grass poorer. As one volunteer puts it, "The number is hopeful, but our job is not finished."
The lesson travels well beyond Xizang. In Yunnan, the population of wild Asian elephants has risen from about 150 in the 1980s to nearly 400 today, thanks to corridors that link forests and to local people who warn drivers when elephants are near. Protecting wildlife is never a one-day job: it asks for patience, money, and the will to exist in harmony with nature.
1. What does the underlined word "comeback" in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. A return to a former state.
B. A sudden disappearance.
C. A long migration.
D. A new species.
【答案】A
2. Why were "bridges and gates" added according to Paragraph 2?
A. To keep tourists away.
B. To mark the reserve border.
C. To help antelopes cross roads safely.
D. To count the population.
【答案】C
【解析】原文 so that the animals can cross safely,桥梁与通道是为让动物安全穿越公路。
3. What can we infer from the volunteer's words in Paragraph 3?
A. He is satisfied with what has been done.
B. He is worried but hopeful.
C. He wants to give up.
D. He doubts the data.
【答案】B
【解析】hopeful 对应 the number is hopeful, but 之后 our job is not finished 表担忧,故 worried but hopeful。
4. What is the author's main purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To compare two species.
B. To introduce a new park.
C. To criticize local people.
D. To call for long-term action.
Protecting wildlife is never a one-day job
rise to 900 中 to 后仍是终点;但 rise by 900 表增量
the government / volunteers / local people
but / however / yet
Only he can help us
protect... from 的宾语
The reserve protects illegal hunting 错;应改为 prevents illegal hunting
species / the number / population 作主语
many species are;the number of species has risen。

In order to save the animal from (6)______ (die), the governments of twelve countries placed large areas (7)______ national protection. Volunteers were trained to watch (8)______ the leopards day and night, using camera traps instead of guns. As (9)______ result, the number of snow leopards (10)______ (rise) to around 7,500 across the range. Only when people learn to exist in harmony with nature will such success stories continue.
1
is
主语 the snow leopard 为第三人称单数,谓语用 is
2
dropping
3
smaller
4
faced
5
out
6
dying
7
under
under national protection 固定搭配,介词不换 in / with
8
over
9
a
as a result(固定短语);不可漏掉冠词 a
10
has risen
In the 1990s, the saiga antelope of Central Asia suffered one of the fastest population crashes ever recorded. Once numbering over one million, the species collapsed to fewer than 50,000 in barely a decade. The main threat was not habitat loss but uncontrolled hunting: after the collapse of the Soviet Union, unemployed local people turned to poaching the antelope for its meat and its horn, which was sold illegally abroad.
Conservationists acted quickly. Kazakhstan and Russia placed the saiga under strict national protection, set up ranger patrols, and worked with local communities to create alternative incomes. Education programmes in village schools taught children why the animal mattered, and former poachers were hired as wildlife guards. Yet the road to recovery remained uncertain. In 2015, a mysterious bacterial disease swept through several herds and killed more than 200,000 saigas in a matter of weeks—a harsh reminder that even protected species remain fragile.
Today, the saiga population has recovered to roughly 2.8 million, and it was downgraded from Critically Endangered to Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List in 2023. Scientists, however, warn that climate change and disease still threaten the gains. "The numbers look good," says one researcher, "but one outbreak could undo a decade of work."
1. What was the main cause of the saiga's population crash in the 1990s?
A. Loss of its natural habitat.
B. Uncontrolled illegal hunting.
C. A sudden change in climate.
D. The spread of a bacterial disease.
【答案】B
【解析】首段 "The main threat was not habitat loss but uncontrolled hunting",明确主因是无节制的偷猎。
2. What does the underlined phrase "collapsed" in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Developed rapidly.
B. Broke down suddenly.
C. Expanded greatly.
D. Recovered slowly.
3. Why does the author mention the bacterial disease in 2015?
A. To explain why the species went extinct.
B. To criticize the governments' measures.
C. To show that protected species can still be fragile.
D. To introduce a new protection law.
【答案】C
【解析】第二段 "a harsh reminder that even protected species remain fragile" 直接点明意图——即便受保护的物种依然脆弱。
4. What can be inferred about the saiga conservation from the passage?
A. It depends heavily on cross-border cooperation.
B. It has ended the poaching completely.
C. It focuses mainly on educating children.
D. It was first proposed by former poachers.
【答案】A
Kazakhstan and Russia placed the saiga under strict national protection and worked with local communities,两国联手、社区参与,可见保护高度依赖跨境协作。
In a small village on the edge of a national park, a young farmer named Kofi used to see elephants as enemies. They came out of the forest at night, walked through his fields, and ate his crops. Like most of his neighbours, Kofi believed the animals should be (1)______, or at least kept far away. One night, however, everything changed. A forest fire (2)______ by lightning spread towards his house, and it was a group of elephants that (3)______ the way to a safe river path. Kofi (4)______ the animals in a new light from that day on.
Years later, Kofi became a guide for the local wildlife reserve. He now spends his days (5)______ tourists and explaining why every species, even the ones that (6)______ trouble, has a role to play. The reserve (7)______ more than 500 square kilometres, and its elephants are (8)______ day and night by a team of rangers and volunteers. Thanks to their (9)______, the number of elephants has slowly (10)______ to over 1,200.
Yet the work is far from finished. Some villagers still (11)______ the elephants as a threat to their harvests, and conflicts over land remain (12)______. Kofi's answer is education. "If people (13)______ what the forest gives them," he says, "they will protect it without being (14)______ to. Awareness, not fences, is what will finally keep both people and wildlife (15)______."

B。show the way 指路,与 "safe river path" 呼应。
4. A。look at... in a new light
B。导游的工作是 lead tourists(带领游客)。
A。watch over 含"警戒、看守"义,与 rangers and volunteers 的守护职责一致。
9. A。thanks to their efforts

威胁
hunt... illegally; valuable fur; make profits; habitats were becoming smaller; threats
They were hunted, illegally, for their valuable fur.
措施
place... under national protection; watch over day and night; keep safe from attacks; bridges and gates were added
Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night.
成效
the population has recovered; downgrade from Endangered to Near Threatened; exist in harmony with nature
The measures were effective. The population has recovered.
The animals are in danger. We must protect them.

1. endangered species
2. under national protection
3. watch over... day and night
4. keep... safe from 使……免于
例:... to keep them safe from attacks.
接动名词多用于被动意义,如 keep them safe from being attacked。
The fence keeps the antelopes safe for wolves.("免于危险源"用 from,不用 for)
5. save... from extinction
6. exist in harmony with nature
第一组 die out / die away / die off
错句:The sound of the wind died out at midnight.
The sound of the wind died away at midnight. / Without protection, this species may die out.
Without protection, this species may die ______.(填入一个适当的词)
第二组 recover / restore
错句:The government restored the antelope population.
restore 强调人为修复受损对象,常接 habitat / forest / building / order,或 restore the population to 70,000。
The antelope population has recovered.
第四组 threat / threaten
错句:The new mines threaten to the camels.
The new mines threaten the camels. / The new mines are a threat to the camels.
New mines are a ______ (threaten) to the camels.
第五组 extinct / extinction / endangered
错句:The species is in danger of extinct.
The species is in danger of extinction. / The species is endangered.
The species is in danger of ______ (extinct).
The population dropped by more than 50 percent...
The government has placed them under national protection...
However, the threats have not yet disappeared...
Volunteers watch over the animals day and night...
2. What has the government done to protect the antelope?
A. It has moved the antelopes into zoos.
B. It has allowed hunting again.
C. It has set up more than 30 nature reserves.
3. What is the speaker's attitude towards the present situation?
A. Proud but cautious.
B. Disappointed.
C. Indifferent.
5. What does the man remind the students to do?
A. Watch the birds from a distance.
B. Feed the birds in the winter.
C. Count the birds every week.

Protecting wildlife is never a one-day job: it asks for patience, money, and the will to exist in harmony with nature.

rise to 900 中 to 后仍是终点;但 rise by 900 表增量
the government / volunteers / local people
but / however / yet
Only he can help us
protect... from 的宾语
The reserve protects illegal hunting 错;应改为 prevents illegal hunting
species / the number / population 作主语
many species are;the number of species has risen。

4. What can be inferred about the saiga conservation from the passage?
A. It depends heavily on cross-border cooperation.
B. It has ended the poaching completely.
C. It focuses mainly on educating children.
D. It was first proposed by former poachers.
