“I have left to follow my dream of knitting (编织) sweaters for penguins in Antarctica and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office… until my penguin friends are happy.” Weeks ago, a teacher in the UK sent this email to her Chinese student, and it soon became popular online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness The Penguin Foundation (基金会) and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia came up with the idea.
The activity began because of a serious oil spill (石油泄漏) near Phillip Island in the 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins had a serious drop. When little penguins were covered in oil, their lives were put in danger.
To solve this problem, the foundation asked people from all over the world to knit sweaters for penguins. These sweaters could keep them warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil.
Luckily, the idea worked. Soon, there was another oil spill near Phillip Island. This time, the sweaters helped save 96 percent of the penguins in the area.
However, some bird protection groups have questioned if these sweaters might put more stress on penguins. In answer to this, the foundation said that the sweaters are only used for a short time. Once the penguins get better, the animals no longer wear them.
Now the lovely project still catches people’s eye around the world. Small acts of kindness can really make a big difference.

Many middle school students feel rushed all the time as they try to balance schoolwork, hobbies, housework, and time with friends. If your days often seem messy or out of control, don’t worry. With a few practical tips, you can manage your day more effectively.
First, start small. For many people, getting started is the hardest step towards finishing a task. Instead of waiting for the perfect moment, take the first step bravely. A small beginning lowers the pressure and often leads to real progress.
Second, break big tasks into small parts. You may find that you can focus on almost anything for just 25 minutes. Set a timer and work with full attention. Then take a five-minute break before starting the next round. This simple cycle can make difficult tasks feel possible.
Third, make unpleasant tasks more enjoyable. If you have to do something you don’t like, try pairing it with something you do enjoy. For example, you can listen to your favourite songs while washing the dishes. By doing so, you turn boring chores into more pleasant moments.
In addition, choose an organizing method that suits you. The best method is the one that truly works for you. Some students prefer colorful sticky notes or phone reminders, but you may work better with a simple to-do list. This is because every time you cross a task off your list, you get a sense of accomplishment and feel proud of yourself.
Finally, remember that learning self-management takes time and practice. If you forget something or make a mistake, treat yourself with kindness. Studies show that being kind to yourself can help you feel less stressed and become stronger when facing difficulties.
Managing your day is about step-by-step progress, not perfection. Try one of these tips today, and you will soon feel calmer, more focused, and more in control.
29. What is the hardest part of finishing a task for many people?
A. Taking the first step. B. Working with full focus.
C. Lowering the pressure. D. Waiting for perfect moments.
30. If you have to do something you don’t like, what can you do?
A. Try to finish it as quickly as possible.
B. Break the task into small parts.
C. Do something you like while doing it.
D. Give yourself a gift after finishing it.
31. What does the underlined word “accomplishment” mean in Paragraph 5?
A. Peace. B. Humour. C. Agreement. D. Achievement.
32. Which of the following would the writer probably agree with?

C. Using phone reminders for plans.
D. Being hard on yourself after mistakes.

Was it possible for a Chinese engineer to build a railway through the mountains more than a hundred years ago? Many foreigners at that time said no. Zhan Tianyou proved them wrong.
Zhan was born in Guangzhou in 1861. At the age of twelve, he became one of the first Chinese children sent to study in the United States. He worked so hard that he was admitted to Yale University, where he studied railway engineering. After returning home, however, he found few chances to use his knowledge, because almost no railways in China were designed by Chinese engineers at that time.
In 1905, the Qing government decided to build a railway from Beijing to Zhangjiakou. Several foreign companies wanted the project, and some even said mockingly (嘲讽地) that the Chinese engineer who could build it “had not been born yet”. Zhan took the job.
The biggest challenge lay in the steep (陡峭的) mountains around Badaling. The railway had to climb nearly six hundred metres within a short distance, but trains at that time were not powerful enough for such a slope (斜坡). After careful surveys, Zhan designed a clever “人”-shaped track. The train would move forward up one slope, then backward up another, climbing higher step by step, just like someone walking up stairs.
He also refused to copy foreign designs blindly. Based on his own surveys, he shortened some tunnels and chose safer routes, saving both money and time. In 1909, the railway was completed two years ahead of schedule and cost less than planned.
Today, a statue of Zhan Tianyou stands beside the Badaling Great Wall. He is remembered not only as the father of China’s railways, but also as an example showing that confidence and creativity can really move mountains.
