Like many parents, we can only put off our kids’ asking for a dog so long until we finally give in. Last fall we looked through dog-rescue websites and, before long, adopted Etti, a spotted Dalmatian: It was rough at first because although Etti is a sweet, loving dog with us, she’s highly reactive to anything else that moves: people, dogs, cats, etc.
Thankfully, we’ve found an excellent trainer. On a challenging training session during which I became frustrated, he said: “Sir, you don’t get the dog you want. You get the dog you need.”
I remember thinking to myself: “Need? Do I really need an anxious, high-strung Dalmatian?” In fact, the last thing I needed was more stress in my already stress-filled life.
Yet, over time, I’ve come to appreciate the wisdom of this expression. When I took Etti on a walk the other day, my whole body tensed up, scanning the environment for possible danger. An unsuspecting passer-by crossed the street toward us and Etti barked loudly. I said to her, “You’re so worked up today, Etti. What’s going on?” And then it hit me that throughout our walk I’d been the one who was tense and worried about the day ahead. In the end, maybe Etti was just acting out what I was feeling, serving as a good reminder that I need to pay attention to my moods and how they affect those — both dogs and humans — around me.
Another notable thing about Etti is the ease with which she shifts from one mood to the next. Etti doesn’t keep thinking about what happened last week, yesterday, or even two minutes ago. Each moment for her is a new “now”. This isn’t to say that she’s not affected by her past. Etti is a rescue, so who knows what she had to deal with in her previous life. However, she does not let it drag her down and determine what comes next, unlike most of us humans.
When we were considering adopting Etti last fall, we read through her description on the rescue site and got a good laugh at the statement that she would need help “being the best dog she can be.” Yet, we had never thought that she was actually the one that guided us to be the better humans.
61. What bothered the author shortly after adopting Etti?
A. Etti’s history as a rescue.
B. Etti’s sensitivity to moving things.
C. Etti’s need for professional training.
D. Etti’s inability to get along with the family.
62. How did the author feel upon hearing the trainer’s words?
A. Encouraged. B. Hopeless. C. Thankful. D. Doubtful.
63. What does the story tell us about Etti?
A. She got moody easily after receiving training.
B. She reminded her owner to care about others.
C. She mirrored her owner’s inner emotional state.
D. She was free from the impact of her past experience.
64. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Every dog has its day. B. Love me, love my dog.
C. Misfortune betters character. D. With unexpected wisdom, we rise.
C
Recently, I attended a public talk by someone whose views I “knew” I would oppose. And yet, I went. I listened, asked questions, and gave my time. While my core values weren’t transformed in those two hours, I learned something and left with a deeper appreciation for the complexity of other perspectives.
In this weeknight activity, I was actively trying to tackle “beliefism” a divisive phenomenon in which surrounding yourself with people who share your views leads to discrimination against those who disagree. In this way, beliefism deepens division and reinforces polarization — building walls instead of bridges.
Indeed, beliefism is widespread in modern society. A significant part of the problem originates from the fact that we live in a world that is both physically and virtually divided. We rarely interact with people from other walks of life. Social media algorithms (算法) stoke the fires of division, locking us into echo chambers that reinforce our preexisting beliefs and shut down debate.
Ultimately, where many forces are driving us apart, we must think — what can we do to unpack division and restore connection?
We can begin by trying to understand the psychology of beliefism, which at its centre is a form of bias — a mental shortcut in which we group people according to single characteristics or generalising assumptions. Indeed, in a world that is infinitely complex, our minds use these biases to simplify and make sense of the world. The thing is, when we see others only through the perspective of their political or social beliefs, we reduce and flatten them to a single dimension. Further, when people feel they are ignored or treated unfairly only for their beliefs, they are left feeling separated and misunderstood.
Secondly, we can understand the tendency for beliefism as part of our evolutionary (进化的) desire to establish a community or group. The problem is that while this instinct (本能) may have once served evolutionary purposes, today, it blocks meaningful dialogue and cooperation. Indeed, research shows that overcoming beliefism has benefits. When we welcome a variety of ideas and perspectives, we are able to overcome group-think and make better decisions and judgements. What’s more, less beliefist people are generally happier, having stronger, more fulfilling relationships and broader horizons.
Luckily, there are a number of relevant, research-backed psychological techniques that help build tolerance and break bias. We might exercise individuation, seeing people as diverse-sided individuals and breaking away from reductive ways of thinking. We can practice perspective-taking, building empathy (同理心) by stepping into someone else’s shoes and trying to see the world through their eyes.
Ultimately, the way forward is not through divisions, but through a recognition of our shared humanity. Remind yourself that each person exists at the intersection of many identities, experiences, and beliefs. Challenge yourself to practice empathy, and remember that no one is wholly defined by the worst thing they have said or done.
65. What does the underlined word “stoke” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Fuel. B. Keep. C. Ease. D. Contain.
66. What can we know about beliefism from the passage?
A. Social media algorithms mainly contribute to its wide spread.
B. Human evolution proves its harm in establishing group-think.
C. It reflects our simplified way of understanding the surrounding world.
D. It leads us to make assumptions about others’ political or social beliefs.
67. Which of the following would be most effective in fighting beliefism?
A. Asking people to write about their experiences of being isolated.
B. Creating a list of acceptable beliefs for each community to follow.
C. Stressing conflict instead of cooperation between different beliefs.
D. Encouraging interactions between people from different communities.
68. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Beyond Us and Them B. The Roots of Beliefism
C. The Harm of Social Division D. At the Crossroad of Faith
“Winners never quit and quitters never win.” It’s a great expression of our admiration of courage and persistence (坚持). But as Aristotle observed over 2,000 years ago, actions pushed to their extreme turn into disasters.
There is a famous story about the Scottish king Robert the Bruce. Robert hid in a cave after his sixth defeat by the English, and there he watched a spider (蜘蛛) try to secure its web to the cave wall. The spider tried and failed six times before finally succeeding. Robert then decided to return to the fight, winning independence for the Scots — on the seventh attempt.
King Robert’s story offers a deep well of inspiration for those who most need it. But lately I’ve been thinking about a possibility the story ignores. What if the spider had been climbing the wrong corner of the cave?
There’s a crucial difference between failing at the right thing and persisting at the wrong one. When we fail at the right thing, persistence makes sense. We learn, adjust, and try again. But when we persist with the wrong thing, every bit of effort takes us further from where we are meant to be.
Quitting is in fact necessary for growth. By ending something, we create space for something new to grow. We need to exit the things that don’t work anymore to be able to enter the ones that make sense for who we are today.
We can imagine a different version of King Robert’s story. In this story, the spider falls a seventh time. It stops on the stone floor — and then turns, moving slowly towards a different corner of the cave, where the wind is calmer and the flies more plentiful.
69. What is Aristotle’s observation according to this passage?
___________________________________________
70. Why is quitting necessary for growth?
___________________________________________
71. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
➢ Failing at the right thing takes us further from where we are meant to be.

B 62. D 63. C 64. D
根据第一段中的“It was rough at first because although Etti is a sweet, loving dog with us, she’s highly reactive to anything else that moves: people, dogs, cats, etc.(一开始很艰难,因为尽管埃蒂对我们来说是一只温顺可爱的狗,但它对其他任何移动的东西反应强烈:人、狗、猫等等。)”
根据第三段中的“I remember thinking to myself: “Need? Do I really need an anxious, high-strung Dalmatian?” In fact, the last thing I needed was more stress in my already stress-filled life.(我记得心里暗自想:“需要?我真的需要一只焦虑、神经紧绷的斑点狗吗?”事实上,在我本就充满压力的生活里,我最不需要的就是更多压力。)”可知,听到训犬师的话后,作者内心充满怀疑。
【63题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“And then it hit me that throughout our walk I’d been the one who was tense and worried about the day ahead. In the end, maybe Etti was just acting out what I was feeling.(然后我突然意识到,在整个散步过程中,一直是我紧绷着,担心接下来的一天。到头来,或许埃蒂只是把我的情绪表现了出来。)”可知,Etti会反映主人内心的情绪状态。
【64题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“When we were considering adopting Etti last fall, we read through her description on the rescue site and got a good laugh at the statement that she would need help “being the best dog she can be.” Yet, we had never thought that she was actually the one that guided us to be the better humans.(去年秋天我们考虑收养埃蒂时,我们浏览救助网站上对它的介绍,看到那句它需要帮助“成为最好的自己”的描述忍不住大笑。然而,我们从未想到,实际上是它引导我们成为更好的人。)”可知,作者收养这只小狗,意外从它身上收获智慧,促使自我成长,由此推断,D选项“With unexpected wisdom, we rise.(带着意想不到的智慧,我们得以成长)”符合文意。
A 66. C 67. D 68. A
根据划线词上文“A significant part of the problem originates from the fact that we live in a world that is both physically and virtually divided. We rarely interact with people from other walks of life.(这个问题的很大一部分源于我们生活在一个物理上和虚拟上都是分裂的世界。我们很少与各行各业的人打交道)”以及后文“locking us into echo chambers that reinforce our preexisting beliefs and shut down debate(把我们锁在回音室里,强化了我们已有的信念,关闭了辩论)”可知,社交媒体算法煽动了分裂之火,把我们锁在回音室里,强化了我们已有的信念,关闭了辩论。故stoke意思是“煽动、助长”与A选项同义。
【66题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Indeed, in a world that is infinitely complex, our minds use these biases to simplify and make sense of the world.(事实上,在一个无限复杂的世界里,我们的大脑利用这些偏见来简化和理解这个世界)”可知,信仰主义反映了我们理解周围世界的简化方式。
根据倒数第三段“When we welcome a variety of ideas and perspectives, we are able to overcome group-think and make better decisions and judgements. What’s more, less beliefist people are generally happier, having stronger, more fulfilling relationships and broader horizons.(当我们欢迎各种各样的想法和观点时,我们就能克服群体思维,做出更好的决定和判断。更重要的是,不那么持信仰主义倾向的人通常更快乐,拥有更牢固、更充实的人际关系和更广阔的视野)”可知,促进来自不同社区的人之间的互动对对抗信仰主义是最有效的。
【68题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Ultimately, the way forward is not through divisions, but through a recognition of our shared humanity. Remind yourself that each person exists at the intersection of many identities, experiences, and beliefs. Challenge yourself to practice empathy, and remember that no one is wholly defined by the worst thing they have said or done.(最终,前进的道路不是通过分裂,而是通过认识到我们共同的人性。
___________________________________________
69. Aristotle’s observation is that actions pushed to their extreme turn into disasters.
70. Quitting is necessary for growth because by ending something we create space for something new to grow.
71. Failing at the right thing takes us further from where we are meant to be.
It is persisting at the wrong thing that takes us further from where we are meant to be.
根据第一段“But as Aristotle observed over 2,000 years ago, actions pushed to their extreme turn into disasters.(但正如亚里士多德在2000多年前观察到的那样,行动推向极端就会变成灾难。)”
根据第五段“By ending something, we create space for something new to grow. We need to exit the things that don’t work anymore to be able to enter the ones that make sense for who we are today. (结束旧事物,才能为新生腾出空间。我们要脱离那些不再适用的过往,才能拥抱契合当下自我的新选择。)”可知,放弃对于成长是必要的,因为通过终结某件事,我们为新事物的成长创造空间。
【71题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“When we fail at the right thing, persistence makes sense. We learn, adjust, and try again. But when we persist with the wrong thing, every bit of effort takes us further from where we are meant to be.(当我们做正确的事失败时,坚持是有意义的。我们学习、调整并重试。但当我们在错误的事情上坚持时,每一点努力都会让我们离本该去的地方越来越远。)”可知,是“在错误的事情上坚持”才会让我们偏离正轨,而不是在正确的事情上失败。
