My first day in high school will never be forgotten. When I got to the classroom in the morning, saw that Mr. Brown had already put our names on our tables. After walking a few steps, I saw my name on the table right in the middle of the classroom. Walking up to my table, my heart sang. “It would be great to sit there. I could see everything easily,” I thought to myself.
A while later, the other students entered one by one and took their own seats. And then Mr. Brown started talking. He showed us his classroom rules and tried to explain them. All of a sudden, a student called Tony started singing loudly. All the while he moved his body to the music. His deskmate Josh couldn’t understand why he was doing these things. Then he stood up and talked to Mr. Brown, “I don’t want to sit with this strange guy. Can I swap seats with someone else in this room, please?”
Mr. Brown didn’t answer his question directly. He stopped what he was doing and turned on his computer. Then he showed us some pictures about autistic (自闭症的) kids. He explained that autistic kids have little self-control. They seem to do things that are beyond everyone else’s understanding. However, they can do many other great things, in the field of art or music for example. Then he told us that Tony was not good at maths, but loved songs. “He can sing thousands of songs. What’s more surprising is that he can remember all the words without any mistakes.” In the end, Mr. Brown added that although autistic kids were different, they should be loved.
Since that first day in high school, I became Mr. Brown’s admirer. I was pretty sure Mr. Brown would get all of us on the right track.

D. He is too different to be loved.
C
Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources (资源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. However, the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.
Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not. “What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who’d done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
28. What may the students start worrying about before an exam?
A. What other students do during the test.
B. Whether they can pass the exams.
C. Whether they have remembered the materials.
D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
29. What is the solution developed by the two researchers?
A. Asking the students to think nothing of the test.
B. Asking the students to focus on the test.
C. Asking the students to write about their worries before the test.
D. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
30. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test _______.
A. became less nervous before the test.
B. were better at controlling their feelings.
C. did better than those who took two tests.
D. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings.
31. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. Writing about worries before an exam can work a bit.
B. Studying in the library can improve students’ performance.
C. Students can also benefit from writing at home.
D. Students should avoid taking tests too often.
D
The Digital Age is a period characterized by the rapid advancement of digital technologies, which have greatly reshaped various aspects of human life, particularly communication. It has speeded up the accessibility of communication, resulting in a new language landscape.
Digital communication has given rise to an explosion of new vocabulary, as digital communication platforms continuously evolve. Many new terms have emerged to describe digital experiences, interactions, and phenomena, such as “selfie,” “hashtag,” and “meme.” These words have become integral to everyday language and reflect the changing ways in which individuals communicate and share their identities online.
Digital communication has significantly changed the way individuals express themselves. One key change is the shift toward informality and briefness in communication. Abbreviations (缩写) such as “LOL,” “OMG” (Oh My God), and “IDK” (I Don’t Know) have become common in everyday conversation, especially in digital spaces where quick exchanges are essential.
One of the most groundbreaking innovations in digital communication is the development of AI-powered machine translation tools, such as Google Translate and Deepl. These tools have dramatically increased the accessibility of content across different languages, enabling users to communicate with others who speak different languages in real time. However, the widespread use of machine translation also presents several challenges. While AI translation tools have made significant advancements, issues related to accuracy and cultural difference remain. For instance, machine translation may struggle with slang (俚语) or context dependent meanings that are integral to certain languages. This can lead to mistranslations or misunderstandings.
In addition to the technical challenges, there is also the issue of language diversity. Machine translation tools primarily focus on widely spoken languages, leaving less commonly spoken languages underrepresented. As technology continues to shape communication, it is essential to promote digital inclusivity, ensuring that all languages, cultures, and communities are represented and supported in the digital landscape. This will require a shared effort to bridge the digital divide, protect language heritage, and make the digital world accessible to everyone, regardless of the language they speak.
32. What is the primary function of new digital vocabulary like “selfie”?
A. To simplify online communication.
B. To replace traditional words and phrases.
C. To label new digital actions and concepts.
D. To standardize daily languages across platforms.
33 Why do AI translators still fall short according to the author?
A. They struggle with born-digital materials.
B. They miss implied cultural meaning.
C. They have a delay in real-time conversation.
D. They ignore users’ emotions completely.
34. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To criticize machine translation tools.
B. To call for diversifying digital languages.
C. To argue for preserving digital new words.
D. To promote digital words in less developed area.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. The evolution of digital languages. B. The informality of digital communication.
C. The explosion of new digital vocabulary. D. The influence of digital communication.

Four Ways to Be a Great Roommate
Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst.
36 Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.
◇Talk things out. Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. 37
◇Don't expect to be best friends. Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. 38
And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.
◇Ask before you take. This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first.
39
◇Clean up after yourself. This should do without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in college are messy. 40 But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.
A.So you need to think twice before you help your roommates out.
B.This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappiness.
C.Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.
D.You don't have all the time to clean your room and keep it organized.
E.It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your roommate.
F.Sometime you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.
G.Remember, you're trying to make a new friend, not to scare your roommate away.

Machine translation tools primarily focus on widely spoken languages, leaving less commonly spoken languages underrepresented. As technology continues to shape communication, it is essential to promote digital inclusivity, ensuring that all languages, cultures, and communities are represented and supported in the digital landscape. This will require a shared effort to bridge the digital divide, protect language heritage, and make the digital world accessible to everyone, regardless of the language they speak.(除技术挑战外,语言多样性问题同样存在。
36.由上一句“Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst. (有室友可能是大学里最好的经历之一,也可能是最糟糕的经历之一)”和下一句“Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour. (遵循以下建议,避免那些让好室友关系恶化的常见错误)”可知,文章给出了一些和舍友相处的好建议,大学有室友的经历怎么样,关键在于和室友是否有良好的关系,承接上下文,E选项“这一切都是从你和室友的良好关系开始的。”切题。故选E项。
37.由上一句“I've seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. (我见过室友关系因为出事而分崩离析,两人非但没有交谈,反而开始背着室友抱怨)”可知,上文讲和室友关系不好,还互相在背后指责对方的话,承接上文,会导致B选项“这只会造成尴尬和不快。”的情况出现。故选B项。
38.由小标题“Don't expect to be best friends. (不要期望成为最好的朋友)”和上一句“Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. (不要给自己或室友施加压力,尤其是初次见面时)”可知,第一次见面时,作者建议把室友当成一个新朋友,而不是当成好朋友,避免给对方太多压力,把对方吓走,承接上文,G选项“记住,你是想交个新朋友,而不是吓跑你的室友。”切题。故选G项。
39.由小标题“Ask before you take. (拿之前先问问)”和上一句“If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. (如果你想维持一段感情,向你的室友展示,通过首先询问让他/她知道你尊重他/她的东西)”可知,作者建议一定要尊重对方,拿别人东西时一定要询问,承接上文,C选项“即使你们都同意分享一切,你还是应该问。”切题。故选C项。
40.由小标题“Clean up after yourself. (你自己收拾一下)”和下三句“Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in college are messy. (别偷懒了。或者,至少,不要把你的室友埋在你的衣服和垃圾里。我在大学里遇到的大多数人都很邋遢)”可知,作者建议和室友相处,要保持卫生干净整洁,承接上下文,D选项“你没有足够的时间来打扫你的房间,保持房间井然有序。”是对保持干净整洁的进一步说明。故选D项。

M: You’d better take a pencil and paper to class. You need to take notes.
W: Why? Everything the teacher will talk about is in the book.
W: The announcement said my flight will depart from Gate 30 instead of 20. Why is my flight number not on the screen at Gate 30? It will depart in 35 minutes.
M: You must have missed the second announcement. Please ignore the gate change. It was an error.
W: I can’t stand Mike.
M: Why? What did he do to make you so angry?
W: He smokes all the time. I really hate the smell.
M: He is worried about his job interview. You might talk to him about it later.
M: Are you coming to my party on Saturday, Judy?
W: I’d love to, but my parents are going out for a meal with their neighbors, and they’ve asked me to look after their dog.
M: Look at you. You are out of breath.
W: I ran all the way here.
M: Why? Where is your bike?
W: There is something wrong with it. My dad is going to have it repaired today.
W: Can you tell me which one of these files contains the sales figures? I need them for the meeting tomorrow afternoon.
M: Susan and David have them, but I recommend looking at Susan’s files. I heard she always comes out with a very good analysis of the figures.
W: Great, I’ll go with Susan’s then. Thanks for the help.
M: No problem. By the way, what time does the meeting start? I guess I’ll have to attend, too.
W: Hey, Jack guess what? The school is closed today because of the heavy snow!
M: Are you sure?
W: Of course. Marcus in our class called me just now. He said it was announced on the radio at 6:30 this morning. I've had a look on the Internet and they' re closing lots of schools in the area. That means I don't need to study math! But I don't want to stay at home all day.
M: Why don't we get some people together for a big snowball fight?
W: Good idea!.
W: Hello, Mr. White. Do you think it’s possible for us to talk sometime today?
M: I’d love to, Miss Wilson, but I’ve got a pretty tight schedule today. I’ve got to finish reading the yearly financial report by 10. ⑩Then I have to drive to the airport to pickup an advertiser at 11. After that, I’ll have a meeting with him over lunch.
W: Can I see you after lunch?
M: Well, let me see… after lunch, I have to attend a senior staff meeting, which may last about two hours. Can you come at 3? We can talk for an hour before I meet my sales team at 4.
W: I’m afraid an hour is too short. What about tomorrow morning?
M: 9 to 11 then. I’ll wait for you at the office.
W: OK, see you then.
W: Hey, Bill. I hear they’re going to send you to Germany for the new project.
M: Boy, news travels fast around here! I only got the orders a couple of hours ago. Rachel doesn’t even know…
W: Oh, no? So, what are you waiting for? When do you plan to tell her?
M: Well, she is at work at the moment. She doesn’t finish until 5. I’ll have to wait until tonight now, I suppose.
W: Well, I was posted there before, back in 2008. It’s OK—a bit like England really. At least the weather is similar, and the people aren’t much different. The only thing I didn’t like is the food, especially the sausages. What do you intend to do about the family? Are you going to take them with you?
M: Well, I’d like to, but I don’t know much about the situation at the moment… you know, about schools and all that. But I hope to move the family out there in a couple of months’ time. I don’t think I want to spend a year and a half out there on my own… I mean, without Rachel and the kids. I mean, I don’t see that much of them now as it is.
W: Yeah. Well, that’s the way it is normally in our company, I suppose.
M: Yeah. Well, we’ll see. Let me pay for the coffee.
W: No, no. I’ll pay.
M: If you dream of a newer and fitter you, starting this January. I have some bad news: 70% of health-related New Year’s resolutions are given up in the first week. By the end of the month, 90% of us have got the chocolate cake back in the cupboard and the pizzas in the freezer, while the new gym membership card is gathering dust. This may not seem a very inspiring start on motivation, but we need to learn what has gone wrong, so that this time we can do it differently, with the help of science. I guess most of us have started something with good intentions, only to fail at a later stage through shortage of something, such as energy or commitment. So, what’s the secret? Exercise devotion, which means making an organized program and keep up with it, applies to everyone, from great athletes who need the extra drive that turns a natural talent into an Olympic gold, to the overweight who need to do something to protect themselves against heart disease and cancer. Somewhere in the middle of these extremes, struggling to get to the gym three times a week, is you. This involves setting realistic goals, scheduling workouts, tracking progress, and adjusting the program as needed. You can do it. All you need is a bit of moral support and some good old-fashioned determination.
