If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others?
Don't listen to people who say young people today often think only of themselves. It's not true at all. More and more people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don't do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
Jason Moore, 18
This summer, I'm going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not rich. They'll teach me what to do, so I'll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.
Alice Hamilton, 17
I'm going to help the Forest Centre build new hiking paths in the mountains. It's going to be terrific (极好的) —I'll spend the whole summer living in a tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I'm going to sleep under the stars. It'll be a nice sport, and I'll be able to do something good at the same time.
Trish Anderson, 16
I'm going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I'll work for a program called Reading For Life. Every day, I'm going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me.

A. It teaches families to build houses.
B. It gives young builders free training.

A. To earn much money. B. To start her own business.
C. To get teaching experience. D. To improve her reading ability.

Some people discover their life goals by accident, while others achieve them step by step. For Alyssa Rae Tootle, the owner and creative designer of A. R. T Photography, her love for recording the most real and natural moments of life grew from an early age and finally became her lifelong career (事业).
Alyssa was born and grew up in Statesboro. She fell in love with photography at home. Her mother almost always carried a camera. When she was 12 years old, Alyssa got her first camera as a gift. Her life changed greatly. She began to record every wonderful moment around her. As she grew up, her natural curiosity and kindness to others were slowly added to her photos. Photography perfectly matches her adventurous personality and her ability to make people feel warm and recognized. What started as a hobby slowly turned into a full-time job, which focuses on recording life stories and serving other people.
The name A. R. T Photography is not just made up of her initial letters (首字母). It also shows her working idea. Every photo-taking chance allows her to add beauty and art to real life, keeping short moments forever. Alyssa uses three simple words to describe her photo style: real, natural and original. She loves natural and free styles and encourages her customers to show their true selves, creating a comfortable environment for honest and real photo shooting.
However, no one can succeed easily. For Alyssa, the biggest difficulty of being a full-time photographer is not creating good works, but keeping a good balance between artistic creation and business work. “Sometimes you need to think about the advantages and disadvantages of one choice and follow the right trend (趋势),” she said.
In the future, Alyssa hopes to make A. R. T Photography a famous and reliable local brand in Statesboro and nearby areas. Most importantly, she wishes her photos can remind people to slow down, find the small beauty in daily life, and value their own hobbies and life journeys. These valuable beautiful things are always easily missed in busy daily life.
4. What led to Alyssa’s early interest in photography?
A. Her family influence. B. Her formal lessons.
C. Her outdoor activities. D. Her customers’ support.
5. What is the special meaning of the name A. R. T Photography?
A. Mixing art with real-life moments. B. Building a first-class local business.

High school is a funny card and a “Love you, Ma.” Kindergarten is afternoons at the park. High school is keys to the car. Kindergarten is excited talk about his day. High school is just “My day was fine, Ma.”
Kindergarten is the beginning. High school is the beginning of the end. You know that your time with him at home will become less and less. The moments when your family will always feel complete at the end of the day are coming to an end. I’ve raised him to leave us. I’ve raised him to be independent (独立的), and I’m watching him pull away, one day at a time.
As I watched him board the bus to high school, my eyes filled with tears again and my heart ached more deeply than it did on his first day of kindergarten. The bus pulled away, and my eyes met his. He gave a quick wave and mouthed, “Love you.” And then he made a silly face, and he wanted his mom to go back into the house now and set her mind at rest. I waved back and laughed. High school, here we come.

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Kindergarten is paper and glue sticks. High school is computer projects and technology you don’t understand. Kindergarten is Mother’s Day gifts made with handprints. High school is a funny card and a “Love you, Ma.” Kindergarten is afternoons at the park. High school is keys to the car. Kindergarten is excited talk about his day. 【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The bus pulled away, and my eyes met his. He gave a quick wave and mouthed, “Love you.” And then he made a silly face, and he wanted his mom to go back into the house now and set her mind at rest. I waved back and laughed. High school, here we come.(公交车驶离,我和他的目光相遇。他迅速挥了挥手,用口型说:“爱你。”然后他做了个鬼脸,他想让妈妈现在回到屋里,好让她放心。我挥手回应,笑了。高中,我们来了。)”可知,儿子做鬼脸是为了安慰妈妈,让她安心。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“I thought back to his first day of kindergarten (幼儿园). How he ran in excitement to the bus as my heart broke, and how his smiling face in the window caused my tears to flow.(我回想起他上幼儿园的第一天。他兴奋地跑向公交车,而我的心都碎了;他在车窗里的笑脸让我泪流满面。)”以及最后一段中“As I watched him board the bus to high school, my eyes filled with tears again and my heart ached more deeply than it did on his first day of kindergarten.(当我看着他登上开往高中的公交车时,我的眼睛再次充满泪水,我的心比上幼儿园第一天更痛。)”可知,全文以儿子升入高中为契机,母亲回忆儿时,感慨孩子已经长大、慢慢独立远去,B项“Good-bye, My Little Boy(再见了,我的小男孩)”最贴合这一核心情感,适合作文章标题。
D
Children are born with the curiosity to explore. Yet as time goes by, they are becoming less interested in science. Why? This loss of interest may be partly caused by the words children hear. And these messages don’t come just from parents; they can also come from school teachers who see science as an identity (身份) instead of things people do.
When talking to children, many adults might say things like “Let’s be scientists today” or “You’re such a good scientist”. But this kind of identity-focused language, which treats science as a role rather than activities people take part in, can demoralize young children. One study showed that children as young as four, especially girls, kept their interest longer when told “Let’s do science” instead of “Let’s be scientists.”
One possible reason is that when thinking of a scientist, children may imagine a white man. If they don’t believe they can be that kind of person, they will lose interest in activities meant for “scientists.” This fixed-idea belief that science is only for certain people appears much earlier than expected. By Grade One, when asked to draw a scientist, children usually draw a white man.
The good news is that spoken messages can also help kids get more involved (参与) in science. Talking about science as actions we take, for example, seems to keep young children interested in science for a longer time. But teenagers are trying out and finally forming different roles for themselves. So unlike its bad influence on young kids, role-centered language may help teens stay interested in science. In another study, telling kids about a future role in science (such as “scientist” or “doctor”) encouraged middle school students to finish more homework and brought better grades.
As a result, adults had better use different spoken messages for children of different ages to keep their interest in science.
12. What makes children less interested in science?
A. Certain words they hear. B. No chances to explore outdoors.
C. Bad feelings from science experiments. D. Heavy pressure from their science teachers.
13. What does the underlined word “demoralize” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Change. B. Discourage. C. Attract. D. Satisfy.
14. Why do young kids lose interest in activities about science?
A. They dislike pictures of white men. B. They show no respect for scientists.
C. They fail to see themselves as scientists. D. They consider science activities too difficult.
15. Which of the following may the author agree with?
A. Teens should say no to roles in science.
B. Young kids should do less science work at home.
C. Middle schoolers have no interest in school subjects.
D. Adults should change their words according to kids’ ages.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D
【解析】
【导语】文章主要讲述了儿童对科学兴趣减退的原因,并建议成人按孩子年龄使用不同语言。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“This loss of interest may be partly caused by the words children hear.(这种兴趣的丧失可能部分是由孩子们听到的话语造成的)”可知,孩子们对科学兴趣减退的部分原因是他们听到的某些话语。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“One study showed that children as young as four, especially girls, kept their interest longer when told “Let’s do science” instead of “Let’s be scientists.”(一项研究表明,四岁的孩子,尤其是女孩,在听到“让我们做科学”而非“让我们当科学家”时,能更长时间保持兴趣)”可知,“让我们做科学”更能长久维持孩子兴趣;反过来,“让我们当科学家”这类以身份为中心的语言就会打消、挫伤孩子积极性,会使孩子泄气。 demoralize意思是“使泄气”,与Discourage意思相同。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“If they don’t believe they can be that kind of person, they will lose interest in activities meant for “scientists.”(如果他们不相信自己能成为那种人,他们就会对面向“科学家”的活动失去兴趣)”可知,小孩子对科学活动失去兴趣是因为他们没能把自己看作科学家。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“As a result, adults had better use different spoken messages for children of different ages to keep their interest in science.(因此,成年人最好对不同年龄的孩子使用不同的口头信息,以保持他们对科学的兴趣)”可知,作者认为成年人应该根据不同年龄段的孩子,使用不同的科学话语引导他们。

My eyes were filled with tears as I thought about his new journey in the morning. My baby was off to high school.
I thought back to his first day of kindergarten (幼儿园). How he ran in excitement to the bus as my heart broke, and how his smiling face in the window caused my tears to flow. I thought about how hard it was to let go of his hand and let him fly on his own for the first time. But this time, I found it was even harder.
Kindergarten is paper and glue sticks. High school is computer projects and technology you don’t understand. Kindergarten is Mother’s Day gifts made with handprints. High school is a funny card and a “Love you, Ma.” Kindergarten is afternoons at the park. High school is keys to the car. Kindergarten is excited talk about his day.

A. Comfort and ease. B. Anger and impatience.
C. Sadness and loneliness. D. Surprise and excitement.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Bus-ride to School B. Good-bye, My Little Boy
C. The First Day of Kindergarten D. My Son’s Colourful High-school Life
