Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn't a lot of time. Today I had to go from one building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there. I was worried about being late, and I was late. The teacher said, "Just be on time tomorrow, or you'll have detention (放学后留校)."
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot, because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, "A portrait is a way of communicating with a person." We just did drawings today, but I know it's going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really helpful. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we would pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used a good way to express my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn't know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.

You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen, you still feel anxious. How are you going to make friends?
When you talk to people at orientation (迎新会), you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern (关心的事) with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The learning task in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests.
Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.
8. How do the freshmen usually feel on their first day of senior high school?
A. Proud. B. Happy. C. Excited. D. Nervous.
9. What are freshmen probably worried about?
A. The ability to make friends. B. The learning task.
C. The freshman orientation. D. The relationship with teachers.
10. What do after-school activities mainly help students to do?
A. Develop their interests. B. Develop friendships.
C. Build up their strength. D. Improve their learning ability.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. What you'll learn in senior high school.
B. What you learned in junior high school.
C. The difference between junior high school and senior high school.
D. The importance of being more independent and responsible.

When you think of a school cafeteria (餐厅), what comes to mind?
For years, my school’s cafeteria was just a space with shining lighting, plastic tables, and boring yellowish-brown walls. But last semester, something magical happened. A student-led art project made the cafeteria a creative center, which encouraged conversations, developed a sense of community, and even made lunchtime feel more special.
It all started with a simple idea during an art club meeting. A student named Maya pointed out that the cafeteria felt like a hospital waiting room and suggested working with the school to improve the space. With “yes” from the headmaster and a small amount of money, students across grades 9 — 12 began brainstorming themes and drawings. The goal was not only to decorate walls, but to create a space that mirrored diversity, celebrated talent, and encouraged curiosity.
After weeks of planning, teams of students worked in turn after school, drawing on the blank walls, changing old furniture with painted designs, and hanging student-made sculptures from the ceiling. Today, stepping into the cafeteria feels like entering an interactive (互动的) art show.
The artwork not only brightened the space but also changed the cafeteria’s role in our school culture. Teachers noticed students staying after lunch to discuss the pictures on the walls. Shy freshmen connected through painting meetings. Surprisingly, even the lunch workers got involved, suggesting themes like “being thankful for food”. The change also had other positive effects, like reducing littering (乱扔垃圾).
Ms. Rivera, the art teacher who advised the project, shared, “This wasn’t about perfection. It was about giving students ownership(物主身份)of their environment. It builds confidence when students see their work in a shared space. Art in the cafeteria isn’t just about making things look nice. It reminds students that our school isn’t just a building. It’s their space, and they have the power to change it.”
12.What was the school cafeteria like before the art project?
A.A popular community space. B.A crowded area with broken furniture.
C.An unattractive and bad-looking space. D.A creative center with student artworks.
13.What was Maya’s main role(角色) in the art project?
A.She designed all artworks. B.She suggested the project idea.
C.She led the working teams. D.She raised money for the project.
14.What positive(积极的)change did the art project bring to the cafeteria?
A.It shortened students’ lunchtime.
B.It reduced the price of cafeteria meals.
C.It encouraged communication among students.
D.It replaced the lunch workers with student volunteers.
15.What can we infer(推断) from Ms. Rivera’s words?
A.School buildings should be more artistic. B.Teachers’ advice is key to project success.
C.Perfect artworks are necessary for a nice space. D.Students should care about school environment.
