In 2020, many people in China stayed at home because of the COVID-19 outbreak. At the same time, doctors and nurses went to hospitals and worked day and night. Among them was Zhang Wenhong, a doctor from Shanghai.
Dr Zhang often spoke to the public in simple words. He explained how the virus spread and why people needed to wash their hands, wear masks and keep a safe distance. He also reminded people not to believe unconfirmed information online.
Dr Zhang was not only a doctor who treated patients. He was also a person who encouraged people to face difficulties calmly. When some people felt worried, his clear explanations helped them feel less afraid.
“Heroes are not born to be fearless,” Dr Zhang once said in an interview. “They become brave when they choose to do the right thing.” His words show that courage is not the absence of fear. It is the decision to act responsibly even when life is difficult.

When I was ten, my father took me to visit a mountain village. We met an old teacher named Mr Gao, who had taught there for more than forty years. The school was small, and there were only two classrooms.
Mr Gao lived in a room next to the school. Every morning, he walked along a mountain path to collect the children who lived far away. During winter, the path was often covered with snow. He carried a small bag of books and sometimes carried a child who was too tired to walk.
“Why don’t you move to a bigger school in the town?” I asked him.
He smiled and said, “The children here need a teacher. If I leave, who will help them read and write?”
Over the years, many of his students went to high school and university. Some became doctors, some became engineers and some returned to the village to help their neighbours. Mr Gao was proud of them, but he never called himself a hero.
For me, he was a hero because he had spent his life doing a useful job. He did not wait for praise. He simply stayed where he was needed.

A. More than forty years.
B. Less than ten years.
C. About two years.
7. What did Mr Gao do every morning?

A. They forgot the village.
B. They returned to help their neighbours.
C. They stopped learning.
10. Why does the writer think Mr Gao was a hero?
A. He won many prizes.
B. He spent his life doing useful work.
C. He travelled around the world.
C
People often imagine a hero as someone who saves others in a dangerous situation. However, heroes can also be people who quietly protect a community.
In a coastal town, a group of volunteers patrols the beach every weekend. They collect plastic bottles, teach visitors about sea animals and help children stay away from dangerous water. The group was started by Lin Mei, a 17-year-old student.
Lin Mei became interested in sea protection after she found a dead sea turtle on the beach. She learned that the turtle had eaten a plastic bag. She then invited her classmates to join her. At first, only three students came. Later, more people joined because they saw the changes on the beach.
The volunteers do not receive money for their work. They give up some weekends and sometimes work in hot weather. Lin Mei says that the work is worthwhile because a clean beach is safer for people and animals.
The group has also created a “beach library”. Visitors can borrow a book after they pick up ten pieces of rubbish. This simple idea makes cleaning the beach more interesting. It also reminds people that everyone can do something useful.
11. What does the volunteer group do?
A. Builds houses. B. Protects the beach. C. Teaches foreign languages.
12. Why did Lin Mei become interested in sea protection?
A. She found a dead sea turtle.
B. She wanted to earn money.
C. She moved to another town.
13. How many students joined at first?
A. Three. B. Ten. C. Seventeen.
14. Why does Lin Mei think the work is worthwhile?
A. It makes her famous.
B. It makes the beach safer.
C. It gives her free books.
15. What can visitors do in the “beach library”?
A. Borrow a book after collecting rubbish.
B. Buy plastic bags.
C. Swim for free.
