Dear Samuel,
Thank you very much for your email. I hope I can help you out. I understand your feelings. It’s normal to feel stressed.
First, don’t worry too much about your marks. You can ask your Maths teacher for help and do more practice. Second, ignore those classmates who laugh at you. Just focus on yourself. Third, talk to your parents or friends about your worries. They care about you. Also, doing sports is a good way to relax.
I believe you will get better soon.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

(25-26九年级上·江苏南京·期中)In English, when someone is very angry, we say this person “sees red”, like a bull goes wild after seeing a red cloth. Now it turns out that “seeing red” is not just an expression for angry people, 16 a scientific fact.
Researchers at North Dakota State University in the US found that there is a 17 between the color red and anger. Angry people really do “see red” where others don’t. And a preference for red over blue may 18 suggest a more hostile (怀有敌意的) personality.
The study includes a number of experiments. In the first test, researchers asked a group of people which color they 19 , red or blue. Participants (参加者) then did personality tests. Results showed that those who chose red tended to be more hostile.
During a second test, participants looked at faded images that could be regarded as either red or blue. Those who saw red 20 25 percent higher on hostility in the personality test.
“Hostile people have hostile thoughts; hostile thoughts are connected with the color red. 21 , hostile people see this color more often,” the researchers told The Independent.
22 , the participants were told about imaginary situations in which they could take different actions. Results showed that in these situations, red-preferring people were 23 likely to show that they would harm another person than those who preferred blue.
“An important message from this research is that 24 can send psychological (心理的) meanings,” the researchers said.
Where does this connection between the color red and anger come from? Scientists said it might be a matter of evolution (进化). Send me a worry, and I’ll send you a quote (暖心语录) for free! If you like the quote, please let me know.
Drummer Boy
I got a drum kit (套装) for my 16th birthday. There’s a cool band at school. Their drummer, Lucas, is leaving as his family’s moving. The band asked if I’d try out and Lucas will teach me. But I’m not sure if I’m good enough. I don’t want to get my hopes up and be upset if I don’t make it.

Alice 9:10 p.m. |3rd May
Winston Churchill said, “A negative (消极的) thinker sees the difficulty in every chance; a positive (积极的) thinker sees the chance in every difficulty.” Even if there are problems, there are also great things you can do there that you can’t at home. So, go and remember the rainbow!

What is your favourite colour? US scientists have found a new colour called “olo”. It is a very deep blue-green.
Colours come from light. Our eyes and brain work together to see them. Light goes into our eyes and hits the retina (视网膜) at the back. On the retina, there are about 6 million cone cells Most of us have three groups of cone cells: S cones for blue, L cones for red, and M cones for green. When light hits the cones, they send “messages” to our brain. The brain then tells us what colour we see.
We can see about 10 million colours this way. But all of them fall between ultraviolet light (紫外线) and red light. Olo is outside this colour space, so we can’t see it with just our eyes, said ScienceAlert. In the new study, scientists made olo by using special tools to fire lasers (激光) into five people’s eyes safely. This “woke up” only the M cones. Natural light usually hits all cones, but this was different, said the BBC.
The study may open new doors for helping with colour-blindness (色盲), said USA Today. Imagine wearing special glasses that let you see olo every day. Maybe these glasses can help people with colour-blindness enjoy more colours in life, like the bright red of a strawberry or the fresh green of spring leaves. In our daily life, we often forget how amazing our eyes are. When we look at a rainbow or a sunset, thousands of cone cells are working together in less than a second. The new colour olo tells us that the world still has secrets waiting to be discovered.
Next time you pick up a crayon or choose a T-shirt, think about the tiny cone cells in your eyes. They are quietly telling your brain, “This is blue,” or “This is red.” And who knows? Maybe one day you will be the scientist who finds another brand-new colour!
29.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The olo light. B.The red light. C.The ultraviolet light. D.The natural light.
30.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?
A.Your brain tells cone cells in your eyes what colour you’re seeing.
B.Olo was first seen in nature by US scientists with just people’s eyes.
C.All colours fall between ultraviolet light and red light, including olo.
D.Many cone cells often work together when people look at a rainbow.
31.What is the main purpose of this text?
A.To warn readers about the danger of ultraviolet light.
B.To compare common people with ones with colour-blindness.
C.To explain how animals see colours differently from humans.
D.To introduce a newly created colour and the science behind it.

(25-26九年级上·江苏南京·期中)Making new friends isn’t easy. It can be difficult to know what to talk about, so we choose safe topics like the weather, music or books. These conversations are polite but often feel empty and don’t usually lead to a real friendship. But what if there was a way to feel close to someone much faster?
Research shows there may be a quicker way to build strong connections—by asking deep, thought-provoking questions. This idea first appeared in the late 1990s, when scientists created something called the Fast-Friends Steps. In these studies, strangers were asked to discuss personal topics such as “What would a perfect day be like for you?” or “What item would you save first if your house was on fire?” After talking for just 45 minutes, participants (参与者) said they felt surprisingly close and some even stayed in touch after the study ended.
Then in 2024, researchers in the Netherlands wondered if this way could also work to improve the relationships between parents and their children. During this experiment, parents spoke with their children, but instead of common small talks, parents asked more meaningful questions such as “What’s the strangest thing you have ever experienced?” or “When was the last time you felt alone?” Before and after the talks, the children completed a short questionnaire about how loved and supported they felt. Even after just nine minutes of conversation, the children’s scores increased greatly, showing that these meaningful questions helped them feel closer to their parents.
Psychologists say the reason asking deep questions helps us to connect with others is because of something called “self-disclosure”. When we open up and share our personal thoughts and feelings, this creates feelings of closeness. Maybe building a close bond with someone doesn’t always take years. Sometimes, it can start in just a few minutes.
32.Which question would you use to build a real friendship with others?
A.Did you catch the weather this morning? It’s freezing cold.
B.Have you read the best-seller The Let Them Theory recently?
C.Christmas is coming. What would you buy for your kid as a Christmas gift?
D.Have you listened to Olivia Rodrigo’s new song? It’s been in my head all day.
33.What was the purpose of the 2024 experiment in the Netherlands?
A.When to make children feel loved at home.
B.How to help strangers become friends quickly.
C.What kind of questions are meaningful to children.
D.Whether deep questions can improve parent-child relationships.
34.What does the underlined word “self-disclosure” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Staying in touch. B.Opening one’s heart.
C.Choosing safe topics. D.Building strong connections.
35.What may be the best title of the passage?
A.Small talks can build good friendship.
B.Making close friends won’t take many years.
C.Conversations are useful in friendship making.
D.Deep questions help create closeness with others quickly.

Serkan: [quite surprised by his friend’s shabby (衣衫褴褛的) appearance] Nasrettin, come in. My servant will seat you.

In 25 times, poisonous plants and insects could cause wounds and bleeding: So it may have become instinctive (本能的) for our ancestors (祖先) to link the color red with danger and threats.

Tim 7:20 p.m.|2nd May
Here’s a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “Man often becomes what he believes himself to be.” If you keep saying you can’t do something, you might end up unable to. But if you believe you can, you’ll get the ability, even if you don’t have it at first.

B
【答案】29.A 30.D 31.D
根据第三段“Natural light usually hits all cones, but this was different”... 故选A。
根据第四段“When we look at a rainbow..., thousands of cone cells are working together.”
C
根据“safe topics like the weather, music or books...don’t usually lead to a real friendship.”及“there may be a quicker way to build strong connections—by asking deep, thought-provoking questions.”
根据“researchers in the Netherlands wondered if this way could also work to improve the relationships between parents and their children”可知,实验目的是验证深度问题能否改善亲子关系,故选D。
根据“When we open up and share our personal thoughts and feelings”可知,“self-disclosure”指的是敞开心扉分享想法,故选B。
