(25-26九年级上·湖南长沙·期中)While having Chinese classes, we are often amazed at how beautiful the ancient Chinese poems and articles are. However, these ancient texts can be quite difficult sometimes. It’s challenging for many of us to understand them. Here is good news for us. Recently, a college research team from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, has created “Xunzi” to help with the understanding of Chinese ancient books and research on them.
Xunzi is a large language model (LLM) that includes a great number of Chinese ancient books and documents, like the collections of the “Complete Library in Four Sections” or “SikuQuanshu”. It uses deep learning techniques and big data (数据) sets, and collects more than two billion Chinese characters and words. This LLM was named after Xunzi because he was not only a famous philosopher (哲学家) during the Warring States Period, but also a pioneer in presenting and explaining theories of linguistics in ancient China.
With the model, researchers can quickly summarize (总结) the ancient texts in order to know about the themes of the ancient books. It can also find key information from the ancient texts, such as characters, events and places. Last but not least, the model can help researchers translate the ancient texts into modern Chinese to fully understand them.
“The research on traditional Chinese classics is hard work even for professors, let alone for common learners. We just hope Xunzi can help save some time and energy for people,” said Wang Dongbo, who led the research team. The LLM has been published (出版) on websites like github.com and modelscope.cn, allowing users to download and use it for free. “Although we spent great effort and money on it, we still share it for free to encourage more people to study and pay attention to traditional Chinese culture,” Wang added.
23.Without technology, how do you feel about ancient Chinese poems and articles?
A.Convenient. B.Easy. C.Hard.
24.How many advantages (优点) of LLM can you find in Paragraph 3?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four.
25.Which of the following is NOT True about the LLM“Xunzi”?
A.Tons of Chinese ancient books are included.
B.It may help save time and energy for people.
C.The LLM has never been published online.
26.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce a useful language model.
B.To make people study Chinese culture.
C.To share studies of Chinese classics.

(25-26九年级上·湖南长沙·期中)
Imagine a writer who described the times with nothing but words. That was Mao Dun (1896—1981), one of China’s greatest modern writers. Born as Shen Yanbing in Zhejiang, he later chose the pen name “Mao Dun”. With the help of his friend Ye Shengtao, this name became famous.
So what powers Mao Dun’s writing? His masterpiece Midnight (Ziye), published in 1933, gives us the answer. The story takes place in busy Shanghai. It follows Wu Sunfu, a factory owner who fights against foreign competitors and dishonest officers. Through Wu’s sad story, Mao Dun showed the real problems China faced in the 1930s. The book was so popular that critics (评论家) called 1933 “the year of Midnight”.
Mao Dun could write about more than just cities. His Rural Trilogy (农村三部曲)—Spring Silkworms, Autumn Harvests, Winter Ruins—voiced the feelings of poor farmers. In these stories, good harvests (收成) sometimes bring disaster. This shows how big world events could shake even the smallest Chinese villages. Mao Dun could move easily from writing about business offices to farming fields. You can feel his deep care for common people on every page. But his real gift was his realistic writing style. With this ability, he recorded social changes so clearly that his books are like history and literature joined as one. Readers can almost see and feel the time periods he wrote about.
As we near his 130th birthday in 2026, Mao Dun’s works still speak to us today. They remind us that great writing is more than just for fun—it helps us see the world more clearly. For young readers today, his books open a window to China’s past and encourage us to value our own literary treasures.
27.What do we know about Mao Dun?
A.The name Mao Dun is his real name.
B.His hometown made him famous.
C.He is among China's greatest modern writers.
28.Which is closest to the underlined word “powers” in meaning in Paragraph 2?
A.提供电力 B.赋予力量 C.掌控权力
29.Why did Mao Dun write about both city people and poor farmers?
A.Because he lived in both city and countryside.
B.Because he made money from them.
C.Because he cared about common people.
30.What does the writer think of Mao Dun’s works?
A.Still valuable.
B.Too difficult.
C.Only historical.

On August 16, 2025, Pang Zhongwang, a doctoral student from Tsinghua University, won the “Touching China 2024” Award. His story, from a young man who fought against heavy hardships to an encouraging character, has warmed many hearts.
Born with great challenges, Pang lived a hard life when he was a child. His father has a serious mental illness. His mother’s legs were cut off, so she could hardly move. Pang himself had a heart problem since he was born. He went door-to-door to borrow money for his mother’s illness. He also picked up waste things to make money and help pay off his family’s debts (债务). However, he never lost hope. He always believed “Knowledge can change my life”.
In 2017, Pang entered Tsinghua University with a very high score in the college entrance exam. At first, he was worried that he might let others down. But later, he found his interest in scientific research. He kept trying even when he failed many times. Although money was still a problem, he decided to depend on himself. That’s why he said no to people who raised money for him. Instead, he asked Tsinghua University for grants (补助金) and won prizes for good grades. His mother named him “Zhongwang”, and it means “the hope of everyone”. She always told him to look forward to the future. Pang once said, “Mom smiles every day, why should I feel sad?”
Sadly, his mother passed away in 2020. That was just before he got the chance to study for a doctor’s degree at Tsinghua. Now, Pang has written many important science papers and got patents (专利) for his inventions. His dream is to “serve the country through scientific research” and he works hard for this goal. His story lights the way for many people.
As the award speech says: “You leave your hard times behind. You face life with a smile and move forward strongly.” Pang’s journey shows us that if we are strong and keep hope, we can live up to what others expect of us and create our own bright future.

I am Lucy from Australia. Last term, my teacher asked me to join a group project about world cultures. There were four of us in the group. At first, we had a big problem. Everyone had different ideas, and we couldn’t agree on anything. I worried that we would never finish the project. I even wanted to give up halfway. But then we had a talk. We decided to listen to each other and share the work. I took notes, Mike drew pictures, Anna looked up information online, Tom put everything together and wrote the report. Slowly, our project started to look really good. On the school fair day, we showed our work to other classes. Many students came to see it. Our group got the highest score in class. I felt so proud that I told my parents right away. They gave me a big smile. I learned that when people work together and help each other, they can do great things. Now I enjoy team projects more than before.

A.Two. B.Three. C.Four.

Last term, my teacher asked me to join a group project about world cultures. There were four of us in the group. At first, we had a big problem. Everyone had different ideas and we couldn't agree on anything. I worried that we would never finish the project. I even wanted to give up halfway. But then we had a talk. We decided to listen to each other and share the work. I took notes, mike drew pictures. Hanna looked up information online. Tom, put everything together and put the court slowly. Our project started to look really good on the school fair day, we showed our work to other classes. Many students came to see IT. Our group got the highest score in class. I felt so proud that I told my parents right away. They gave me a big smile. I learned that when people work together and help each other, they can do great things. Now I enjoy team projects more than before. I am Lucy from australia. Last term, my teacher asked me to join a group project about world cultures. There were four of us in the group.
