B They say that nursing is one of the most noble professions out there. I think that the saying is more than true. Nurses might be the only individuals on this earth that hold back their own tears to give a smile to others. If you were asked to name history’s greatest nurses, you would almost certainly mention Florence Nightingale, who was born into a wealthy family but devoted her life to caring for those in need. Yet while many remember her as a nurse, few recognize her as the “great genius”. Born on May 12, 1820, Florence had a once-in-a-generation mind — a genius who mastered several languages and pioneered statistical concepts still in use today. Her parents were different too. At that time, women were generally expected to stay at home, but her wealthy father attached great importance to the education of his two daughters. On February 5, 1837, the teenage Florence declared her commitment to easing people’s suffering in this world and this was when she joined nursing. Both parents objected strongly; even her open-minded father refused to accept it. Nursing wasn’t then a respected profession. For over twelve years, Florence refused to give up, but she could not change their minds. Only when she turned thirty, her father exhausted by resistance, did he finally send her to Germany for formal nursing training. Her defining moment came in the Crimean War. Leading 38 nurses to a British military hospital, she faced cold rejection from doctors unwilling to work with women. Yet through firm determination, her team introduced cleanliness, care, and hope — reducing the death rate dramatically. Nightingale was known for carrying a lamp and checking on the soldiers at night, and that is how she earned herself the title of “the Lady with the Lamp”. Though she passed away in 1910, her spirit lives on through International Nurses Day and the Florence Nightingale Medal, honoring caregivers worldwide long after her death. 24. Why does the author mention nursing in the first paragraph? A. To define the profession. B. To introduce the topic. C. To provide the background. D. To present the problems. 25. What can we learn about Florence’s early life? A. She was raised in a progressive family. B. She displayed early talent in medical studies. C. She received her nursing training locally. D. She followed his father’s footsteps in nursing. 26. Why was Florence known as “the Lady with the Lamp”? A. She helped light up hospital rooms. B. She pioneered cleanliness with lights. C. She guided people through sufferings. D. She attended to military men at night. 27. Which of the following words best describe Florence? A. Influential and forgiving. B. Thoughtful and easygoing. C. Determined and dedicated. D. Industrious and disciplined. C You can almost see scientists becoming excited or annoyed whenever a new Hollywood film rolls out, riddled with scientific errors. But one astronomer voiced a suggestion — maybe it’s OK if a movie makes mistakes in the facts, as long as it gets the big picture right about science and scientists. Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute gains his own experience on Hollywood sets. His biggest problem wasn’t with the technology from other planets. Instead, he fought for the filmmakers to stop showing the scientists as data-calculating stereotypes(刻板印象). “Real scientists don’t describe an object entering the solar system as notable for the fact that it was not moving in a normal orbit ... but moving at the speed of three times ten to the seventh meters per second,” said Shostak. “More likely, they would say that there was ‘a rock headed our way.’” Besides trying to make his fictional versions more approachable human, he emphasized the need for films to focus on conveying the scientific method rather than arguing about details. Another scientist disagreed. Wayne Grody, a physician at UCLA, suggested that wrong description of medicine could confuse viewers. “Perhaps some people do take away more science than they should from their favorite films or television shows, although I’d like to see the court case where someone successfully charges the TV series Grey’s Anatomy with misleading them on a medical condition.” However, Shostak’s point seems reasonable on the whole. Even medical educators have used shows to engage medical students to deal with bioethical issues. The power of big or small screen drama comes from persuasive characters that may represent brilliant doctors or scientific geniuses, but also have unusual human characteristics that allow viewers to empathize. Such stories serve the purpose of helping demystify science. After all, science fiction writer Isaac Asimov once remarked that science could become as mysterious and impossible to understand as magic. Storytellers may help shine a light into the foggy temple by creating characters that practice science. 28. What is Seth Shostak’s major concern about movie production? A. The inaccuracy of alien technology. B. The rigid representation of scientists. C. The insufficiency of the scientific terms. D. The misapplication of scientific methods. 29. What can be inferred from Wayne Grody’s quote? A. Courts play a role in monitoring scientific content. B. TV dramas are responsible for medical popularization. C. Viewers are particular about scientific details in shows. D. Medical errors in fictional works can do real-world harm. 30. What does the underlined word “demystify” in the last paragraph mean? A. Advance. B. Prove. C. Illustrate. D. Complicate. 31. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. Scientific Accuracy in Films: Does It Really Matter? B. Seth Shostak: A Scientific Consultant in Hollywood C. The Hidden Risks of the Inaccurate Medical Dramas D. Scientists’ Objections to Stereotypes in Some Movies D A groundbreaking Chinese study has found that using a combination of drugs before surgery can nearly double the time patients with a deadly form of liver(肝脏)cancer live without the disease returning. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, focused on a cancer called ICC. This cancer forms in the bile ducts(胆管)inside the liver and is known for being “silent”, often discovered only after it has reached an advanced stage. Experts say the findings may offer a new treatment option for the disease whose five-year survival rate after surgery is currently only 25 percent to 40 percent. The researchers tested a pre-surgery plan as a first step to make a tumor(肿瘤)smaller before the main surgery. In this trial, 178 patients aged 59 on average had participated by February 2025. One group received three rounds of Gemox cancer treatment along with a drug designed to target the cancer and another drug that helps the body’s natural defense system recognize and attack cancer cells. The other group went straight to surgery without receiving the drug combination beforehand. The results showed that the drug combination significantly delayed the return of the cancer. The typical event-free survival, meaning the length of time after treatment without the cancer coming back or having certain serious problems, was 18 months for those receiving the drug combination. In contrast, the group that went straight to surgery saw a figure of only 8.7 months. Shi Guoming, one of the lead researchers, noted the tumors in the drug-treatment group became significantly smaller, with an objective response rate of 55 percent. China is affected by this disease more than many other countries, seeing over 50,000 new cases annually, which accounts for more than half of the global total. The study also showed a promising trend in overall survival. The 24-month survival rate for the group that got the drugs was 79 percent, compared to 61 percent for the surgery-only group. 32. What can we know about ICC? A. It mainly develops outside the liver. B. Its early symptoms are usually hidden. C. Its death rate remains relatively low. D. It is rarer in China than other countries. 33. Why did the researchers carry out the study? A. To test a supplementary treatment for ICC. B. To identify the fundamental causes of ICC. C. To prove the effectiveness of ICC surgeries. D. To modify conventional ICC surgery methods. 34. How is the research conducted? A. By establishing a database. B. By interviewing the patients. C. By setting a control group. D. By designing medical models. 35. What aspect of the treatment is discussed in the last paragraph? A. Its limitation. B. Its mechanism. C. Its distribution. D. Its prospect. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Before You Throw It Away In August 2026, a Brooklyn library listed repair events where neighbours could fix belongings together. Such gatherings invite us to reconsider what we do when something breaks. The aim is not to repair everything yourself, but to question whether replacement should always be your first choice. Here are four ways to develop a repair habit. ● Look beyond the price Replacing a broken object may seem convenient. ___36___. Making and transporting its replacement also requires materials and energy. Keeping something useful for longer can reduce that demand. ● ___37___. At a repair event, resist just handing over your item and waiting. Ask what went wrong and watch how volunteers approach the problem. Understanding their choices prepares you for similar problems at home. Even a simple question can turn a quick repair into a useful learning experience. ● Value an unfinished repair ___38___. You may leave with an object that still needs work. Yet discovering why it failed can help you choose a stronger replacement or care for other belongings better. The knowledge gained is worth keeping, even when the object itself is not. ● Make room for conversation While working together, people exchange more than practical advice. A neighbour who helps with a broken chair may become someone you greet next week. ___39___. The next time something stops working, you may still reach for your phone to order another. ___40___. Before opening a shopping app, consider whether repair is possible and who could help. That small change gives both objects and skills another chance. A. Not every item can be saved B. An old habit needs a new response C. Learn alongside the person helping D. Nevertheless, it carries a hidden cost E. Compare prices before choosing help F. He knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life — to play the guitar in his own band. Fausto decided to earn money to buy a guitar. He turned off the television, and biked north to the nicer section of Fresno in search of work. He went from door to door for three hours, only to get one job — being asked to buy a bar of bread, for which he received a dirty quarter. While sitting in a park, a dog approached him. It was a fancy dog, with a shiny collar with his name, Roger, and address. This dog seemed to belong to rich people. An idea flashed across Fausto’s mind. He decided to take Roger home and collect a reward, saying he had found him near the freeway 15 miles away. The lie formed easily, but a small, cold knot of unease tightened unexpectedly in his stomach when walking the dog home. He knocked and a woman in a silky blouse opened the door. “Ma’am,” Fausto said, “I found your dog by the freeway. His tag says he lives here, doesn’t he?” “That’s right!” the woman replied in a surprised and joyful voice. She then invited Fausto into the house. Fausto looked around, amazed by the shiny furniture. “You’re probably hungry after your good deed,” the woman said, bringing Fausto milk and a warm apple pie. Fausto ate, aware of the woman’s caring eyes watching him. He felt embarrassed by lying to such a kind lady. “That was good,” he said after he finished. “Thank you, Ma’am! Now I have to go home.” As Fausto walked to the door, the woman opened her purse and took out two bills. “For your honesty and help,” she said warmly, pressing two hundred dollars into his hand. Fausto couldn’t meet her stare, his face burning with a sudden feeling of shame deeper than mere embarrassment. 注意:(1) 续写词数应为 150 左右; (2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 With the money grasped tightly in his hand, Fausto hurried to the music shop. Much as he wanted the guitar, Fausto headed back to the woman’s house. 昆明市第一中学 2027 届高三第二次月考 英语试卷 第 页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
