what if they make a mistake?
Then the whole artwork has to be started all over again.
Well.this activity isn't suitable for me.I won't try it.I don't have a good sense of direction.
But it's very popular among artists worldwide now.So far, more than 18,000 pieces of such art have
been uploaded on the Internet.
Well,I think it's a great activity for artists. It's a mix of art and exercise.
Right.
:It's the time of year when toads set off on their travels. So why do toads cross the road?Well, they
like to go back to their original breeding ground. They cross from this field, over the road and into
the lake.
18But cars come and go on the road.It could be dangerous for toads. So the road is closed
during March. When Margaret Cooper on the Toad Patrol first got this road closed 25 years ago,
around a thousand toads would cross it every March.19 Now,it's probably no more than a
hundred or two, which is really worrying. And this is reflected nationally. It's not just here in
Oxton. So that's why every bit of help to give them is really important.
Margaret raises hundreds of pounds to pay for the road closure. She patrols the area and rescues any
toads that may lose their way.The work that she has been doing over a period of 25 years is just
incredible.
20It's just brilliant that Margaret cares much about this tiny creature. When she has a toad in
her hand and it croaks, that's the best thing in the world.
20.How does Margaret Cooper feel about her work?
A.Content.
B.Bored.
C.Exhausted.
(答案A
When she has a toad
in her hand and it croaks, that's the best thing in the world.”

M:I didn't feel quite well then,14so I just watched some news on the Internet at home.
W:Is there any news that impressed you?
M:Yes.There was some concerning news about the narwhals.
W:I know the marine animals. They are strange-looking.A narwhal is a whale which has a long tusk
coming out of its head. That's how it got its nickname, the unicorn of the sea. They live in the
Arctic Ocean. Is there anything wrong with them?
M:Yes.5Experts say some populations of narwhals could be extinct in the near future, and it's all
because of noise pollution.Narwhals use sound to find food and navigate their surroundings.
However, the increase in human marine activities,as well as climate change, has resulted in the
Arctic Ocean becoming noisier. So it's more difficult for narwhals to rely on sound.
W:That's really bad.
M:In fact,man-made noise is extremely difficult for these animals to adapt to.There was a study
published in the journal Science Advances. It recorded the reactions of narwhals to the noises from a
large ship.On hearing these sounds, they stopped sending out signals they use for finding food
underwater.16This means man-made noise could wake up the creature's "threat button".
W:So what can we do?
M:17Charlotte Findlay,a research fellow at Aarhus University, says,"Noise is actually quite easy
to solve. We need to either turn it off or turn it down."

根据The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust部分中“You can visit his childhood home, explore exhibits about his life and works, and experience live performances in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre..(你可以参观他童年的家,探索关于他的生活和作品的展览,并在皇家莎士比亚剧院体验现场表演)”可知,游客在莎士比亚出生地可以看现场表演。故选A。
根据The Pablo Neruda House部分中“I wish I knew Spanish well enough to read Neruda’s works in his native language.(我希望我的西班牙语能读懂聂鲁达的母语作品)”以及“Suggested reading: Twenty Love Poems: And a Song of Despair(建议阅读:二十首情诗和一首绝望之歌)”可知,Twenty Love Poems: And a Song of Despair可知适合来自西班牙的Holly。故选D。
根据第一段“Here are some museums in honor of famous writers you can visit.(这里有一些纪念著名作家的博物馆,你可以参观)”以及文章主要介绍了四个和著名作家相关的博物馆的情况。
24.C 25.B 26.D 27.A
根据第二段 “…Louis Leakey, who immediately recognized her passion for animals and hired her as his secretary. Despite her lack of formal scientific training, Leakey recommended sending her to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to study chimpanzees.”
根据第三段 “They both got malaria, a deadly infectious disease, and the chimps kept running away, but Goodall did not give up. She offered them bananas, and approached them quietly and respectfully.”
根据第四段 Louis Leakey 所说 “Well, it’s always been considered that man is the only toolmaking animal. So we now have to redefine tool, redefine man, or include chimpanzees with humans.”
28.A 29.B 30.C 31.D
根据第一段中“ This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives—and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place.(这种对争论的厌恶是很普遍的,但它取决于对争论的错误看法,这种观点会给我们的个人和社会生活带来问题——而且在很多方面,它首先忽略了争论的意义)”可知,作者对于Carnegie对争论的看法持批判态度,故选A。
根据第二段中“Like physical fights, verbal (言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions — like, say, tennis matches.(和身体上的打斗一样,言语上的打斗也会让双方流血。即使你赢了,你最终也不会变得更好。如果争论只是一场比赛,比如网球比赛,你也会感觉很糟糕)”可知, 很多人尽量避免争论,是因为即使赢了他们也感觉很糟糕,故选B。
30.词句猜测题。根据划线短语所在句“ask them to give you a reason for their view”可知,让他们为自己的观点提供依据,即让他们充分阐明他们的观点,spell out意为“解释明白,讲清楚”,故选C。
根据最后一段中“If we change our view of arguments—from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all earn respect and understanding from each other—then we change the very nature of what it means to “win” an argument.(如果我们重新调整我们对争论的看法——从一场口水战或网球比赛转变为一种理性的交流,通过这种交流,我们都能获得彼此的尊重和理解——那么我们就改变了‘赢得’争论的本质)”可知,作者认为“赢得”争论的关键是通过交流获得彼此的尊重和理解,故选D。
32.D 33.B 34.C 35.A
根据第二段中的“ The children were separated into four groups relating to the height above sea level at which they lived: up to 1000 metres, 1001 to 2000 metres, 2001 to 3000 metres or above 3000 metres. (研究人员根据孩子们居住的海拔高度将他们分为四组:海拔1000米及以下、1001至2000米、2001至3000米以及3000 米以上。)”可知,洛萨达的研究分析主要基于分组数据。故选D项。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“At altitudes above 3000 metres, the prevalence was higher again: 86 out of 10,000. However, the team says this may be an accident caused by the small size of the data sample, as this data set included fewer cities and children than the other three altitude ranges. (在海拔3000米以上的地区,肥胖发生率又有所上升,达到万分之八十六。然而,研究团队表示这可能是一个统计偶然,因为该数据集包含的城市和儿童数量少于其他三个海拔区间。)”可知,研究团队认为这个意外结果是偶然发生的。故选B项。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“But he also insists the study is only based on observation, so it doesn’t prove high altitude prevents obesity. (但他也强调,这项研究是仅基于观察的,因此并不能证明高海拔可以预防肥胖。)”以及“But “you can’t account for everything”, says Stensel. (但是“你不可能考虑到所有因素”,斯滕塞说。)”可知,作者提及斯滕塞尔是为了说明该研究方法存在局限性。故选C项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第一段中的“The effects of high altitude (海拔) on the human body could protect against obesity (肥胖), according to a study of more than 4 million children across Colombia. (一项针对哥伦比亚400多万名儿童开展的研究显示,高海拔对人体产生的影响或可预防肥胖。)”可知,文章围绕一项关于不同海拔高度与儿童肥胖发生率关系的研究展开,介绍了研究结果、相关质疑以及后续研究建议,核心是探讨海拔对儿童体重的影响。A项“海拔对儿童体重的影响”概括文章主旨,可以作为最佳标题。故选A项。

上文“Our minds move past these moments not because we lack care, but because of a useful characteristic developed over time called habituation.(我们的大脑之所以能忽略这些时刻,并非因为我们缺乏关注,而是因为一种进化上具有实用价值的特性——习惯化)”引入“habituation”这个新概念,C项“它会让重复的体验随着时间推移变得不那么容易被注意到”是对习惯化核心定义的补充解释,承接上文对该特性的描述。
37.下文“The brains of unborn babies can already habituate to repeated light and sound stimuli (刺激), learning to ignore familiar signals and pay more attention to new changes.(未出生的婴儿的大脑已经能够对重复的光和声音刺激产生习惯,学会忽略熟悉的信号,并更多关注新的变化)”提到未出生的婴儿的大脑已经能对重复刺激产生习惯化,F项“值得注意的是,这种适应能力甚至在出生前就存在”恰好引出后文胎儿阶段的相关例证,逻辑衔接紧密。
39.根据下文“Habituation may make us ignore warning signs like ongoing pain, putting off medical treatment. People may gradually get used to unsuitable or harmful behavior, accepting things that should never be put up with.(习惯化可能导致我们忽视持续的疼痛等警示信号,延误就医。

Value of Money
Recently, our class has heatedly debated whether money is the most important thing in life. Opinions are divided.
Some think money is the most important, as it covers daily needs like food and housing, and brings comfort. Others argue money isn’t everything. It can’t buy health, love, or happiness. True joy comes from relationships and personal growth.
In my view, while money is important, it shouldn’t be the sole focus. We should strive for a balanced life where financial stability coexists with emotional well-being.

Ms Carter called Jamie to the office. Sunlight shone through the window as Ms Carter handed the envelope to Jamie. “This will help your sister get the daycare,” she said. Jamie’s fingertips touched the envelope—quite thick. His throat tightened, tears welled up in his eyes. He tried to express his gratitude, but he was too moved to say a word. Ms Carter touched Jamie on the shoulder and smiled, “I believe you and your family will live through the cold winter and the difficult situation will change soon.” Jamie nodded, with tears streaming down his cheeks. (90 words)
After school, Jamie got home and handed the envelope to his mom. The envelope felt so heavy in Mom’s shaky hands. “The funds will really make a difference.” Mom’s whisper seemed to warm the cold atmosphere in the house. The money meant so much to them. With the medicine bought and the baby taken care of, Mom was getting much better. That night, Jamie’s pencil moved freely across homework for the first time in weeks, its shadow dancing alongside mom’s even breathing on the monitor. When Jamie finally handed his homework to Ms Carter the following morning, a broad smile swept across her face. (93 words)

Jane Goodall, whose groundbreaking studies of wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩) made her a household name, passed away at the age of 91. Her work showed the striking similarities between humans and chimpanzees, reshaping our understanding of both species.
Born in London in 1934, she developed a deep love for wildlife and a longing to go to Africa. However, with little money, she attended secretarial college instead of university. In 1960, after working as a waitress to save for a trip to Kenya, she met the paleontologist (古生物学家) Louis Leakey, who immediately recognized her passion for animals and hired her as his secretary. Despite her lack of formal scientific training, Leakey recommended sending her to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to study chimpanzees.
The government, worried about a young woman camping in the forests by herself, ordered Jane to find a partner. So she brought along her mom. They both got malaria, a deadly infectious disease, and the chimps kept running away, but Goodall did not give up. She offered them bananas, and approached them quietly and respectfully.
In just a few months, Goodall made a major discovery. Chimps could make and use tools—as she learned by watching a chimp she’d named David Greybeard. He removed leaves from a thin stick, and then used it to fish termites (白蚁) out of their home. Louis Leakey said, “Well, it’s always been considered that man is the only tool-making animal. So we now have to redefine tool, redefine man, or include chimpanzees with humans.”
In 1986, Goodall’s life changed. When she attended a conference in Chicago and learned how chimps were being used in medical experiments, Goodall became an activist, traveling almost nonstop to give talks.
Sometimes people would ask her, “Which do you like better, chimps or people?” She’d say, “Well, it depends. Chimps are so like us that I like some people much more than some chimps and some chimps much more than some people.”
24.What was the most important reason for Leakey’s decision to recommend Goodall?
A. Her secretarial skills. B. Her scientific interest.
C. Her fondness for wildlife. D. Her education background.
25. What do we know about Goodall’s experience in Gombe?
A. Her mother helped lessen her loneliness.
B. She overcame difficulties with patience.
C. She obtained chimpanzees’ trust upon arrival.
D. The government regretted sending her there.
26. What does Louis Leakey suggest about Jane’s discovery?
A. It shows chimps’ playful nature.
B. It changes human’s development.
C. It confirms chimps’ learning abilities.
D. It challenges human’s uniqueness.
27. Which of the following can best describe Goodall?
A. Pioneering and loving. B. Creative and responsible.
C. Honest and patient. D. Adventurous and confident.
C
In his 1936 work How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie wrote: “I have got to the point that there is only one way to get the best of an argument, and that is to avoid it.” This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives—and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place.
Camegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is how we often think of them. Like physical fights, verbal (言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions—like, say, tennis matches. Pairs of competitors hit the ball back and forth (来回反复) until one winner comes out from all who entered. Everybody else loses. This kind of thinking explains why so many people try to avoid arguments.
However, there are ways to win an argument every time. When you state your position, formulate (阐述) an argument for what you claim and honestly ask yourself whether your argument is any good. When you talk with someone who takes a stand, ask them to give you a reason for their view and spell out their argument fully. Judge its strength and weakness. Raise objections and listen carefully to their replies. This method will require effort, but practice will make you better at it.
These tools can help you win every argument—not in the unhelpful sense of beating your competitors but in the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them. If we change our view of arguments—from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all earn respect and understanding from each other—then we change the very nature of what it means to “win” an argument.
28. What is the author’s attitude toward Carnegie’s understanding of argument?
A. Disagreeable B. Supportive. C.Interested. D. Uncertain.
29. Why do many people try to avoid arguments?
A. They fear being ignored. B. They may feel bad even if they win.
C. They lack debating skills. D. They are not confident in themselves.
30. What does the underlined phrase “spell out” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Protect. B. Judge. C. Explain. D. Repeat.
31. What is the key to “winning” an argument according to the author?
A. Proper manners. B.Firm supporting evidence.
C. Way of thinking. D. Understanding both sides.
D
The effects of high altitude (海拔) on the human body could protect against obesity (肥胖), according to a study of more than 4 million children across Colombia. The findings support the theory that low oxygen levels drive the body to use more energy, though previous evidence comes mainly from adults.
To understand the possible impact on children, Lizcano Losada at the University of La Sabana analyzed data on 4.16 million children aged up to 5 years old from 1123 cities. The children were separated into four groups relating to the height above sea level at which they lived: up to 1000 metres, 1001 to 2000 metres, 2001 to 3000 metres or above 3000 metres.
In the two lower-altitude regions, around 80 out of every 10,000 children had obesity. However, at altitudes of 2001 to 3000 metres, the prevalence (发生率) of obesity fell to 40 in 10,000. At altitudes above 3000 metres, the prevalence was higher again: 86 out of 10,000. However, the team says this may be an accident caused by the small size of the data sample, as this data set included fewer cities and children than the other three altitude ranges.
“That’s a fair comment,” says David Stensel at Loughborough University. But he also insists the study is only based on observation, so it doesn’t prove high altitude prevents obesity. “They’ve tried to make sure they’ve taken into account the other possible influencing factors,” he says. These include measures of poor economic conditions and low income. But “you can’t account for everything”, says Stensel. Assuming high altitude really does make obesity less likely, Stensel says it isn’t clear how this knowledge could be of practical use in reducing the condition.
However, Losada argues the findings support the creation of geographically tailored public health strategies. He suggests further studies are needed to better understand the biological pathways linking altitude to childhood obesity, which could lead to more correct health advice for different regions.
32. What was the analysis in Losada’s study mainly based on?
A. City type. B. Sample size. C. Children’s age. D. Grouped data.
33. What is the team’s view on the unexpected result of the study?
A. It’s a definite pattern. B. It’s a chance occurrence.
C. It’s a misleading signal. D. It’s a measurement error.
34. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning Stensel in paragraph 4?
A. The importance of health knowledge.
B. The necessity of actionable strategies.
C. The limitation of the research method.
D. The complexity of the influencing factors.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Altitude’s Role in Childhood Weight
B. Less Oxygen, Healthier Children?
C. A New Approach to Fighting Obesity
D. Why the Weight Gap in Colombia?
We often stop noticing things we’ve grown used to, as a side effect of our brains protecting us from sensory overload. Many of us have had the experience of going through daily information without truly noticing familiar content. Our minds move past these moments not because we lack care, but because of a useful characteristic developed over time called habituation(习惯化). 36
This reduced sensitivity serves an important purpose. Without this mental shortcut, we would be continuously disturbed by endless background signals and eventually feel worried about too many things around us. For instance, while working in a café, we may fail to notice background music or unchanging lighting until we pay attention to them on purpose. Our brains quietly ignore unchanging signals to free up resources. 37 The brains of unborn babies can already habituate to repeated light and sound stimuli (刺激), learning to ignore familiar signals and pay more attention to new changes.
Habituation brings many hidden benefits. It helps people adapt to continuous sadness or long-term discomfort, making tough situations more bearable. 38 When the excitement of a new job decreases, this falling satisfaction pushes people to seek growth and explore new possibilities.
39 Habituation may make us ignore warning signs like ongoing pain, putting off medical treatment. People may gradually get used to unsuitable or harmful behavior, accepting things that should never be put up with.
Fortunately, there are practical ways to reverse (逆转) habituation and recover our sensitivity. 40 Changing daily routes, moving things around in your room or taking different sitting positions can bring fresh stimulation. These tiny changes keep our brains out of fixed patterns and help us stay sharp.
A. It also drives personal progress.
B. Small changes in daily life can refresh our senses.
C. It makes repeated experiences less noticeable over time.
D. Without habituation, we would lose our ability to focus.
E. So overcoming negative habituation is especially pressing.
F. Remarkably, this adaptive ability exists even before birth.
G. However, this brain process that works by itself can also hold us back.

Ms Carter’s classroom was always warm, even in winter. The walls were covered with students’ essays and discolored world maps. 14-year-old Jamie sat in the back row, his head hanging low and eyes fixed on his worn shoes. He hadn’t turned in his homework for several days.
“Stay after class, Jamie,” Ms Carter said softly one December afternoon. Her voice wasn’t angry—just worried. “I know you’re capable,” she said, sliding his blank notebook across the desk. But you’ve missed every deadline. Is there anything wrong?”
Jamie, struggling with something he couldn’t express, held back his words and remained silent. Outside, raindrops struck the windows like impatient fingers.
The next day, Ms Carter drove to Jamie’s home after school. As she knocked on the door, she heard a child’s cry. Jamie answered her knock. He was so surprised to see Ms Carter, his face red with scare. A baby girl was on his back, and an oxygen machine hummed(嗡嗡响) beside a sofa where a weak woman slept.
“My mom... she has pneumonia (肺炎),” Jamie explained in a low voice. “I have to take care of my sister after school. The daycare kicked her out last month because Mom missed payments. You see, she can’t go to work now.”
Ms Carter felt her throat(喉咙) closing. She noticed the microwave meals piled (堆叠) on the table. A photo on the fridge showed Jamie wearing a big smile, his mother’s arms around him—a life-time ago.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You’d think I’m lying,” he said, voice shaking. “I’ll catch up on my study, I promise.”
After returning home, Ms Carter contacted a local charity organization and explained the family’s difficult situation. The organization willingly promised to help the family. The next morning, the head of the organization came to the school with funds in an envelope, which were enough to cover the expenses of daycare for at least one month.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Ms Carter called Jamie to the office.
After school, Jamie got home and handed the envelope to his mom.

(93 words)
