When Clara Hughes crossed the finish line at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, she didn’t just win a bronze medal in speed skating — she became the only athlete in history to win multiple medals in both Summer and Winter Olympics. But for Hughes, the journey was about much more than medals.
Growing up in a troubled family in Winnipeg, Canada, Hughes struggled with depression and low self-esteem as a teenager. She dropped out of school at 16 and spent her time hanging out with a bad crowd. Her life took a turn when she watched the 1988 Summer Olympics on TV and saw a speed skater competing. Inspired, she decided to take up cycling, a sport she could pursue on her own terms.
Hughes trained tirelessly and qualified for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in cycling, winning two bronze medals. But she didn’t stop there. At 27, she decided to try a new sport — speed skating — despite being considered “too old” to start. She taught herself the basics on outdoor rinks and within four years, she was competing in the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
Throughout her career, Hughes has been open about her struggles with mental health. She has used her platform to encourage others to seek help. After retiring from competition, she became a mental health advocate, travelling across Canada to share her story.
“Winning medals is great,” Hughes once said, “but the real victory is overcoming the battles within yourself.”
24. What made Clara Hughes unique in Olympic history?
A. She won the most medals in a single Olympics.
B. She won medals in both Summer and Winter Olympics.
C. She started her Olympic career at an older age.
D. She competed in three different sports.
25. What inspired Hughes to start cycling?
A. A cycling coach she met. B. Her family’s encouragement.
C. A speed skater she saw on TV. D. Her school’s sports program.
26. What did Hughes do after retiring from competition?
A. She became an advocate for mental health.
B. She returned to school.
C. She became a cycling coach.
D. She wrote a book about her experiences.
27. What is the main message of Hughes’ story?
A. Hard work always leads to Olympic medals.
B. Starting a sport early is key to success.
C. Personal struggles can be overcome with determination.
D. Winning is the only thing that matters in sports.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. A 27. C

Have you ever heard of the Internet hashtag (话题标签) “20 minutes for parks”? It refers to a theory that suggests that spending just 20 minutes in a park each day can help reduce stress, no matter how you choose to spend that time.
In the Douban interest group “We Love Strolling in the Park”, enthusiasts from both home and abroad share their park experiences, post photos, and offer recommendations and reviews of parks.
Huang Bingbing, a Shenzhen-based practitioner (实践者) of this idea, began visiting the small park located just downstairs from her company office during her weekday lunch breaks over three years ago. “On that piece of grass, I could connect with living plants and animals. It allowed me to refresh my mind and heal from the stress of work,” Huang explained.
Huang believes that parks are private spaces. She considers herself a shy person, and parks serve as the perfect recharging spot for introverts. She often spends time alone in parks, free from worrying about social interactions. At the same time, parks also serve as public spaces. Cheng Yuyan, 25, the founder of the “We Love Strolling in the Park” interest group that Huang follows, observed something interesting during her visits to parks in America. She noticed that many park benches were donated by local residents and featured the donors’ nameplates. Additionally, many parks offered guidebooks detailing the history, geography, and blooming schedules of the plants within.
Inspired by these practices, Cheng believes people can further deepen their connection with parks by fostering (培养) a sense of ownership. She plans to encourage members of her Douban group to adopt similar responsibilities. “I hope this group shows more social responsibility. Each of us can become a guardian and contributor to the parks and our city,” she said.
28. Why does the author write the first paragraph?
A. To show the types of parks. B. To describe a scene.
C. To compare scientists’ opinions. D. To lead into the topic.
29. What do Huang’s words show in Paragraph 3?
A. The benefits she got from visiting the park. B. The main business of her company.
C. Her opinions about the interest group. D. The reason why she worked in the company.
30. What can be known about parks in America?
A. They provided a place for charging the cars.
B. They often gave rewards to those who often took a walk.
C. They never accepted park benches donated by people.
D. They offered guidebooks with detailed information about plants.
31. What does Cheng Yuyan plan to do?
A. To promote indoor activities. B. To protect and support parks.
C. To exchange park experiences. D. To call on people to protect the environment.
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. D 31. B

What will our homes be like in the future? According to a recent article, smart homes are expected to make our lives much easier and more comfortable.
A smart home is a living space equipped with technology that allows devices to communicate with each other and with the homeowner. For example, your smart refrigerator could suggest recipes based on what’s inside, and your smart mirror could give you health updates while you brush your teeth.
One of the most exciting developments is voice-controlled systems. Instead of walking around to turn on lights or adjust the temperature, you can simply say, “Turn on the lights” or “Make it warmer.” These systems can also learn your habits over time. If you always turn on the heating at 6 p.m., the system will start doing it automatically.
Another useful feature is smart security. Cameras and sensors can detect unusual activity and send alerts to your phone. You can check on your home from anywhere in the world. This gives many people peace of mind, especially when they are away on holiday.
However, not everyone is excited about smart homes. Some people worry about privacy. If devices are always listening and collecting data, who has access to that information? There are also concerns about cost, as smart home technology can be expensive.
Despite these concerns, the trend towards smart homes seems unstoppable. As technology becomes more affordable, more and more people are likely to invite smart devices into their lives.
32. What is a smart home according to the text?
A. A home with a lot of furniture.
B. A home equipped with connected technology devices.
C. A home that is very expensive.
D. A home located in a big city.
33. What can voice-controlled systems do?
A. Cook meals for the homeowner.
B. Clean the house automatically.
C. Learn the homeowner’s habits and act accordingly.
D. Detect health problems.
34. What concern about smart homes is mentioned in the text?

故填was listed。

in a…way为固定搭配,意为“用一种……的方式”。故填in。

The Person I Look Up To Most
Dear boys and girls,
I feel it is an honour to give a speech here. The person I look up to most is my English teacher, Ms. Li. She is knowledgeable and always patient with us.
What makes her my role model is her passion for teaching. She makes her classes lively and inspires us to learn. I used to fear speaking English. With her encouragement, I built up my confidence and now dare to speak in public. Besides, she teaches us to stick to our dreams.
She sets a great example for me. I sincerely hope to become someone like her in the future — someone who positively influences others.

Emma had always dreamed of becoming an engineer. But now, sitting in her room with her third failed math test in her hands, that dream seemed further away than ever. Tears streamed down her face as she stared at the red marks on the paper.
Her mother knocked softly and entered. “Emma, dinner is ready,” she said gently. Emma didn’t respond. Her mother sat on the edge of the bed. “I know you’re upset. But giving up is not who you are.”
“Maybe it should be,” Emma whispered. “Maybe I’m just not cut out for math.”
Her mother was quiet for a moment. Then she said, “When I was your age, I wanted to be a doctor. But I failed my biology exam twice. I was ready to quit. But my father-your grandfather-told me something I’ve never forgotten.”
Emma looked up, curiosity replacing some of the sadness in her eyes.
“He said, ‘Success is not about never falling. It’s about getting up every time you fall.’ So I kept trying. I found a tutor, studied twice as hard, and eventually passed. I didn’t become a doctor-I became a nurse, which I love-but I never regretted not giving up.”
Emma wiped her eyes. “But what if I try and still fail?”
“Then you try again,” her mother said firmly. “As long as you keep moving forward, you haven’t really failed.”
That night, Emma thought long and hard about her mother’s words.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
The next morning, Emma woke up with a new determination. She opened her math book to review her hardest chapters and made a study plan, reserving two hours daily for math practice. She turned to her teacher for after-class help and joined a study group with math-good classmates. When wanting to give up, she recalled her mother’s words that keeping moving means no real failure. Gradually, she mastered difficult knowledge. She no longer feared mistakes and used every error to learn.
A month later, Emma received another math test result. She unfolded it nervously and saw a B. Though not an A, the score showed her efforts worked. She rushed to tell her mother and got a warm hug. Emma came to know success lies in perseverance rather than perfection. Her dream of being an engineer still needed much work, yet she believed she could make it step by step through failures and small wins.

B. She returned to school.
C. She became a cycling coach.
D. She wrote a book about her experiences.
27. What is the main message of Hughes’ story?
A. Hard work always leads to Olympic medals.

A. They are difficult to use.
B. They may not work properly.
C. They are not popular with young people.
D. They raise privacy and cost concerns.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards smart homes?
A. Positive and hopeful. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested.
