Breaking Bad Habits
There’s no time like the start of a new year to get working on a better, healthier you. Susannah Hickling advises on where to begin.
Making excuses not to exercise
Too tired to go to the gym? Not enough time to squeeze in a swim? Fitness doesn’t always have to involve long training sessions. Short periods of exercise can be good too. For example, go for a shorter walk, but introduce some jogging in the middle, or walk faster between two fixed points, for example. And remember that vacuum cleaning, gardening and climbing stairs can also improve fitness.
Not getting enough sleep
Not getting enough sleep at night can be harmful for health, and may lead to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. To make sure you’re well rested every night, make a new habit — set an alarm for half an hour before you plan to go to bed. This will give you more time to get ready and more sleep time.
Being addicted to your phone
Smartphones can be a terrible time waster. What’s more, too much social media can make you feel dissatisfied with life or full of the fear of missing out — “FOMO”. Limit your screen time with an app, such as Apple’s built-in Screen Time or Flipd for Android. Or simply turn off distracting alerts or delete apps from your phone and only use them on your computer.
Being negative
It’s one of the biggest barriers to maintaining good habits — and to your sense of wellbeing generally. Try to fight the habit of being too hard on yourself by finding three positive thoughts for every negative thought that pops into your head.
21. What is the key advice for busy people to exercise?
A. Do long gym workouts.
B. Give up fitness plans.
C. Use short daily activities.
D. Focus on jogging only.
22. What is recommended to ensure enough sleep?
A. Setting a bedtime alarm.
B. Eating a big meal.
C. Drinking water before bed.
D. Using phones in bed.
23. How should one deal with negative thoughts according to the passage?
A. Accept them without any active response.
B. Focus on personal weaknesses.
C. Find three positive thoughts.
D. Share them on social media.

When 16-year-old Mei began volunteering at the migrant children’s library, she felt like an outsider. The children, with their warm laughter and rapid rural dialect, formed a tightknit circle that her textbook-perfect Mandarin couldn’t penetrate. During storytelling sessions, little Wenjing would vanish behind towering bookshelves, her small frame swallowed by shadows. Mei’s attempts to engage her with classic tales fell flat, the unfamiliar syllables (音节) bouncing off Wenjing’s silence. The library supervisor explained that many migrant children, having left parents behind in villages, often retreated into solitary worlds — a coping mechanism Mei resolved to understand.
One stormy afternoon, rain drummed against the windows as Mei found Wenjing hunched (驼背的) in a dim corner, clutching a pencil. On a sheet of paper, stick figures danced — a round-faced woman, a tiny girl, and a lonely house. “Who’s this?” Mei whispered in halting dialect, stringing together phrases she’d heard from her grandmother. Wenjing’s pencil froze. For the first time, she met Mei’s gaze. “Mama... city... far,” she breathed, tapping the stick woman. Mei noticed calluses (老茧) on Wenjing’s fingertips — marks of long hours helping at her foster family’s vegetable stall, where spoken words mattered less than quick hands.
The next day, Mei arrived armed with wordless picture books. They built towers of giggles with finger puppets. staged silent dinosaur battles, and traced star signs on fogged windows. Language became unnecessary — a raised eyebrow, a shared grin, hands shaping imaginary worlds. Wenjing began leaving small drawings in Mei’s bag: a flower after lunch, a star before leaving — each a silent thank you.
At the farewell gathering, Wenjing pressed a paper into Mei’s palm. Stained crayon strokes showed two girls, one tall and one small, their joined hands arching into a rainbow that swallowed storm clouds. No translations required. The rainbow’s colors bled outside the lines, just as their friendship had transcended language barriers to paint something brighter.
24. Why did Wenjing initially avoid Mei?
A. She feared crowded spaces. B. Mei criticized her drawings.
C. Mei’s formal speech felt alien. D. She disliked Mei’s strict rules.
25. The word “halting” in paragraph 2 most likely means .
A. loud and clear. B. fluent and natural.
C. unique and traditional. D. hesitant and broken.
26. What key development followed the rainy-day interaction?
A. Mei organized a dialect class.
B. Wenjing stopped attending the library.
C They discovered shared artistic hobbies.
D. Verbal language became their main tool.
27. What does the rainbow primarily symbolize?
A. Hope for family reunions. B. Expression through colorful art.
C. Bond beyond language barriers. D. Progress in communication skills.

Imagine a school where students are taught by the best teachers in every subject, regardless of locations. Imagine a school where children can go on safe field trips to the Amazon rainforest or Everest base camp. Well, such schools are already being built: in virtual reality(VR).
Last month, Optima Academy Online (OAO) was launched in Florida and started to deliver courses for elementary, middle and high schools and 170 full-time students from all over the state signed up. They used VR headsets for about three hours a day for formal lessons and then do course work independently with digital check-ins.
It is worth watching how such educational experiments develop. Used properly, the VR technology can help students to access learning resources and be connected with fellow students and teachers all over the world. But if employed poorly, it will have the opposite effect and turn a digital inequality into an educational one.
There is growing evidence to suggest that it is happening. In Mexico, according to a survey, only 24% of 15-year-old students in poor schools have access to home computers for schoolwork compared with 87% in rich ones. As reported in another study, some students in northern England have been forced to travel around on the Greater Manchester train network or camp out around McDonald’s to access free WiFi because they cannot do their schoolwork at home.
“VR technologies will be widely used in education. The only questions are: for what purpose and at what speed?” says Beeban Kidron, a member of the UK’s Digital Futures Commission. “The trouble is that they are too often seen as a shiny new toy that will solve all problems and save money rather than being viewed as a means to enrich learning.”
The inescapable truth is that there is nothing that can replace teachers educating students in safe schools—ideally, with access to well-designed technological platforms. Leaving children in their bedrooms with just VR headsets and no physical social interaction with other kids will fill-many of them—and their parents—with horror.
28. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1?
A. Lead in the subject for discussion.
B. Provide some advice for the readers.
C. Show the advantages of VR headsets.
D. Introduce an unsuccessful online school.
29. Why do those students travel on trains or camp out around McDonald’s?
A. To relax themselves. B. To enrich their learning.
C. To make their study fun D. To get free WiFi service.
30. According to Beeban Kidron, VR technologies___________.
A. will replace traditional learning B. are the future of education
C. will become a very helpful tool D. are a means to save money
31. Which word can best describe the author’s attitude to OAO?
A. Supportive B. Disapproving. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
D
Most Californians are accustomed to experiencing earthquakes, but researchers warn that the state faces a lesser-known danger: supershear earthquakes, which move so quickly that they outrun their own seismic (地震的) waves.
“While California is no more likely to have supershear earthquakes than other similar regions with large fault (断层) systems like the San Andreas, the threat has gone unnoticed for too long,” said Yehuda Ben-Zion, director of the Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC), based at USC Dornlife. “The frequency of the supershear ruptures (超剪切破裂) has been greatly underappreciated.”
“Just as a plane outpacing sound generates a powerful shockwave in the atmosphere, a supershear rupture creates shock fronts in the ground once it surpasses the speed of seismic shear waves,” said Ahmed Elbanna, director-designate of SCEC. “It breaks the shear wave speed barrier in the rocks and produces destructive waves that are stronger than what’s generated by a normal earthquake.”
This additional force can strike communities with severe impact. Supershear quakes not only spread intense shaking over larger regions but also deliver what Elbanna describes as a “double strike” — a sharp shake from the shock front followed by the seismic waves.
Worldwide, about one-third of large strike-slip earthquakes are supershear. That matters in California, where many faults near large urban areas are strike-slip and capable of magnitude 7 earthquakes. “We cannot say exactly when and where the next earthquake will be and which one will be supershear,” Ben-Zion said, “but we can say with certainty that over the next few decades, we will have multiple magnitude 7 earthquakes in California.”
The researchers warn that current design standards don’t fully account for a supershear quake’s extra hit. Buildings are generally engineered for the strongest shaking perpendicular to (垂直于) faults, but supershear quakes direct their energy along the fault line itself. “Critical structures should be built to this higher standard, and so far, they are not,” Ben-Zion said.
The researchers also call for closer monitoring near major faults and advanced computer predictions on supershear situations. “This is where everybody has to contribute,” Elbanna said.
32. Why did Elbanna mention a plane in paragraph 3?
A. To make a prediction. B. To redefine a concept.
C. To show destructive impact. D. To explain a phenomenon.
33. What do Ben-Zion’s words in paragraph 5 suggest?
A. California is bound to experience big earthquakes.
B. Most cities in California are free of earthquakes.
C. Supershear earthquakes are rarely seen worldwide.
D. It’s easy to predict and identify supershear earthquakes.
34. What can be known about current buildings?
A. They can fall victim to supershear earthquakes.
B. They fully absorb the energy of supershear ruptures.
C. They can easily be destroyed by normal earthquakes.
D. They don’t account for the shaking perpendicular to faults.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To issue a warning about common earthquakes.
B. To offer tips on analyzing a lesser-known danger.
C. To call for preparations for supershear earthquakes.
D. To explore California’s earthquake-stricken areas.

Valuable Lesson-My Favorite Superhero
After helping his mother Mary sweep, the street as usual, Jack waved goodbye to her and rushed to school. Reminding Jack of safety, Mary smiled and continued her work, with sweat streaming down. Weak and tired as she was, this brave woman still stuck to her job attentively.
In the classroom, Mrs. Evans asked her students to deliver a speech, themed My Favorite Superhero. As for the heated topic, the class got thrilled, hardly waiting to share their opinions. Finally, it came to Jack’s turn. “My favorite superhero.” Jack started to read in front of the class, then he stopped. He was nervous and felt a bit silly, because his classmates all talked about superheroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Wonder Woman while he was the only one who talked about a real person.
“Go on, Jack.” Mrs. Evans encouraged, nodding at him with smiling eyes.
“My favorite superhero is Mary, my mom.” the class burst into laughter. Jack smiled, too, and wet his lips, “You might laugh at me for saying something like that.” He turned calm and peaceful, “But my mom is the most hard-working person in the world. She is a street sweeper for the city, always getting up before sunrise to start her job. It’s her commitment that keeps the street spotless, just with a broom (扫把) and her heart. With autumn coming, I realized how hard it is and that a real superhero doesn’t wear a cape (斗篷) or go on adventures. Besides, she raised us three kids alone. She loves us in her way, and we can feel it. Though we’re short in money, we seem never lack anything. A real hero takes care of his family. I’m helping her before going to school and hope to grew up and be half the hero my mom is.Thank you.”
After the speech. silence spread in the classroom. It was evident that the entire class was moved by Jake’s speech and got speechless.
Finally, Mrs. Evans spoke. “That was fantastic. You teach us a mother’s bravery and love Your mom should be proud!” When returning to his seat, he received thumbs-up and admiring eyes from his classmates.

A
Breaking Bad Habits
C 22. A 23. C

For example, go for a shorter walk, but introduce some jogging in the middle, or walk faster between two fixed points, for example. And remember that vacuum cleaning, gardening and climbing stairs can also improve fitness.(健身并不总是需要长时间的训练。
根据文章第三段中的“To make sure you’re well rested every night, make a new habit — set an alarm for half an hour before you plan to go to bed. This will give you more time to get ready and more sleep time.(为了确保你每晚都能得到充分的休息,养成一个新习惯——在你打算睡觉前半小时设定一个闹钟。这将给你更多的准备时间和睡眠时间。)”可知,为了确保足够的睡眠,建议设定一个睡前闹钟。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段中的“Try to fight the habit of being too hard on yourself by finding three positive thoughts for every negative thought that pops into your head.(试着克服对自己太苛刻的习惯,每冒出一个消极的想法,就找出三个积极的想法来对抗。)”
B
C. They discovered shared artistic hobbies.
D. Verbal language became their main tool.
27. What does the rainbow primarily symbolize?
A. Hope for family reunions. B. Expression through colorful art.
C. Bond beyond language barriers. D. Progress in communication skills.
C 25. D 26. C 27. C
根据第一段中的“The children, with their warm laughter and rapid rural dialect, formed a tightknit circle that her textbook-perfect Mandarin couldn’t penetrate. During storytelling sessions, little Wenjing would vanish behind towering bookshelves, her small frame swallowed by shadows. Mei’s attempts to engage her with classic tales fell flat, the unfamiliar syllables bouncing off Wenjing’s silence.(孩子们用温暖的笑声和快速的乡村方言形成了一个紧密的小圈子,梅那教科书般标准的普通话无法融入其中。在讲故事的时候,小文静总会躲在高高的书架后面,她瘦小的身影被阴影吞没。梅试图用经典故事吸引她,但那些陌生的音节在文静的沉默中毫无作用。)”可知,梅那教科书般标准的普通话无法融入孩子们的乡村方言形成的小圈子,由此可知,文静最初避开梅是因为梅的正式语言对她来说显得陌生且难以接近。故选C项。
【25题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第二段中的“Mei whispered in halting dialect, stringing together phrases she’d heard from her grandmother. Wenjing’s pencil froze. For the first time, she met Mei’s gaze. “Mama... city... far,” she breathed, tapping the stick woman. (梅用……方言低声问道,拼凑着从祖母那里听到的短语。文静的铅笔停住了。她第一次迎上了梅的目光,轻声说道:“妈妈……城市……远,”同时轻触着画中的那个小人。)”可知,划线单词描述的是梅说方言时的状态,结合上下文可以看出她的方言并不流利,而是显得犹豫且不连贯。因此,划线单词的意思与“犹豫且断断续续的”意义相近。故选D项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The next day, Mei arrived armed with wordless picture books. They built towers of giggles with finger puppets, staged silent dinosaur battles, and traced star signs on fogged windows. Language became unnecessary — a raised eyebrow, a shared grin, hands shaping imaginary worlds.(第二天,梅带来了无字图画书。她们用手指木偶搭建笑声塔,进行无声的恐龙大战,在雾蒙蒙的窗户上描绘星星图案。语言变得不再必要——一个挑眉、一个共同的笑容、双手塑造出想象的世界。)”可知,雨天互动之后,梅和文静通过艺术创作活动发现了共同的艺术爱好,并建立了更深的情感连接,由此可知,雨天互动之后,她们发现共同艺术爱好。故选C项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Stained crayon strokes showed two girls, one tall and one small, their joined hands arching into a rainbow that swallowed storm clouds. No translations required. The rainbow’s colors bled outside the lines, just as their friendship had transcended language barriers to paint something brighter.(蜡笔的痕迹描绘了两个女孩,一个高一个矮,她们牵起的双手化作一道吞没乌云的彩虹。无需翻译。彩虹的颜色溢出了线条,正如她们的友谊超越了语言障碍,描绘出更加明亮的画卷。)”可知,彩虹主要象征着超越语言障碍的情感纽带。故选C项。
C
C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
A 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据文章第一段“Imagine a school where students are taught by the best teachers in every subject, regardless of locations. Imagine a school where children can go on safe field trips to the Amazon rainforest or Everest base camp. Well, such schools are already being built: in virtual reality(VR).(想象一下,在一所学校里,学生们无论在哪里,都由最好的老师教授每门学科。想象一下,在一所学校里,孩子们可以安全地去亚马逊雨林或珠穆朗玛峰大本营进行实地考察。好吧,这样的学校已经在建造了:在虚拟现实(VR)中。)”结合下文对虚拟现实尤其是全虚拟现实对教育的利弊可知,第一段作者意在引出讨论的话题。故选A。
根据文章第四段“As reported in another study, some students in northern England have been forced to travel around on the Greater Manchester train network or camp out around McDonald’s to access free WiFi because they cannot do their schoolwork at home.(据另一项研究报道,英格兰北部的一些学生被迫乘坐大曼彻斯特铁路网络或在麦当劳附近露营以获得免费WiFi,因为他们无法在家做作业。)”
根据文章第五段“VR technologies will be widely used in education.(虚拟现实技术将广泛应用于教育领域)”以及“The trouble is that they are too often seen as a shiny new toy that will solve all problems and save money rather than being viewed as a means to enrich learning.(问题是,它们经常被视为一种闪亮的新玩具,可以解决所有问题,节省资金,而不是被视为丰富学习的一种手段。)”
根据文章第二段提到的OAO的全VR线上教学模式以及最后一段“Leaving children in their bedrooms with just VR headsets and no physical social interaction with other kids will fill-many of them—and their parents—with horror.(让孩子们呆在卧室里,只戴着虚拟现实头盔,不与其他孩子进行任何身体上的社交活动,这会让他们中的许多人——以及他们的父母——感到恐惧。)”
D 33. A 34. A 35. C

根据第三段中““While California is no more likely to have supershear earthquakes than other similar regions with large fault (断层) systems like the San Andreas, the threat has gone unnoticed for too long,” said Yehuda Ben-Zion, director of the Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC), based at USC Dornlife. “The frequency of the supershear ruptures (超剪切破裂) has been greatly underappreciated.”(“虽然加利福尼亚发生超剪切地震的可能性并不比其他拥有像圣安德烈亚斯断层这样大型断层系统的类似地区更高,但这一威胁长期以来一直未被重视,”位于南加州大学多恩西弗分校的加州全州地震中心(SCEC)主任耶Yehuda Ben-Zion说道,“超剪切破裂的发生频率一直被严重低估。”)”

根据倒数第二段中“The researchers warn that current design standards don’t fully account for a supershear quake’s extra hit. Buildings are generally engineered for the strongest shaking perpendicular to (垂直于) faults, but supershear quakes direct their energy along the fault line itself.(研究人员警告说,目前的设计标准并没有充分考虑超剪切地震的额外冲击。建筑物通常是为垂直于断层的最强震动而设计的,但超剪切地震的能量是沿着断层线传播的。)”可知,目前的建筑可能会受到超剪切地震的影响。故选A。
根据最后一段“The researchers also call for closer monitoring near major faults and advanced computer predictions on supershear situations. “This is where everybody has to contribute,” Elbanna said.(研究人员还呼吁对主要断层附近进行更密切的监测,并对超剪切情况进行先进的计算机预测。Elbanna说:“这是每个人都需要做出贡献的地方。”)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是呼吁为超剪切地震做好准备。故选C。
