拓展阅读(课内同源 + 课外同源)
Passage 1(课内同源:Whale songs)
Some whales make long, low sounds during swimming. People often wonder if the whales are singing. By watching and listening carefully, scientists have discovered that whales use these sounds to talk to each other in the ocean.
In the 1960s, a scientist named Roger Payne studied humpback whales (座头鲸). He made an amazing discovery. Their sounds were special repetitive patterns, just like human songs. His research shows that whale songs can travel very far underwater.
Whales use these songs to share information, find food and look for friends. Sometimes, many whales sing the same song, and the song can change over time. A song that is popular this year may be different next year.
This discovery teaches us that animals have smart ways to communicate. If we pay attention, we can learn many wonderful things about nature.
任务一:单项选择
1. What did Roger Payne discover about whale sounds?
A. They were very short and loud. B. They could not be heard at all.
C. They came from small fish. D. They were like repetitive human songs.
2. What can we learn from this discovery?
A. Whales are the largest animals on land. B. Animals have smart ways to communicate.
C. Songs never change over time. D. People should stop watching whales.

Passage 2(课外同源:The boiling river)
Imagine a river that is too hot to swim in. In the Amazon rainforest of Peru (秘鲁), there is a river called the Boiling River. Its water can reach about 86°C — almost as hot as water that is boiling in a pot.
Scientists used to wonder why the river is so hot. Some people thought the sun made it hot, but this is impossible, because the river runs deep in the forest where the sun cannot reach it. After years of study, a scientist named Andrés Ruzo found the answer: hot water from deep under the ground rises up and warms the river.
The hot water is full of special chemicals from the rocks below. Because of these chemicals, few animals can live in the river. However, some tiny living things can still survive there, and scientists are studying whether they can teach us something new.
"Nature always has more secrets than we can imagine," says Ruzo. "The river shows us that there are still wonderful things waiting to be discovered."
任务一:单项选择
1. Why can't the sun make the Boiling River hot?
A. The river runs deep in the forest. B. The river is too short.
C. The river is full of ice. D. The sun never shines in Peru.
2. What did Andrés Ruzo find out?
A. The river is not really hot. B. The river comes from the sea.
C. Hot water from underground warms the river. D. The river is full of fish.
任务二:判断正误(T/F)
3. The water in the Boiling River can reach about 86°C. ( )
4. Many kinds of animals live happily in the Boiling River. ( )
任务三:简答
5. Why do few animals live in the Boiling River?

In the 1960s, a scientist named Roger Payne discovered that their sounds were special repetitive patterns, just like human songs. He also found out that whale songs can travel very far underwater. Whales use these songs to share information, find food and look for friends. Another wonder is a boiling river in Peru. Its water can reach 86°C, and scientists discovered that hot water from underground warms it. I am amazed by these natural wonders. If we pay attention to nature, we can learn many wonderful things.
