In the age of online advocacy,Shailene Woodley knows well the possible problems of
celebrity public welfare. So in 2019,when Greenpeace asked her to join a trip to collect
microplastics in the Sargasso Sea,she expressed her worries clearly before agreeing to take part.
"This can't just be a one-time event:taking beautiful photos and posting them on social media to
attract attention,"she said seriously.Instead, she wanted to know Greenpeace's specific plans in
detail, for she firmly believes that she should put her time and energy into things she can really
change.
As a famous actress having played many popular roles in films and TV shows,Woodley has
devoted considerable efforts to practical environmental protection. She has actively joined various
Greenpeace's activities and spoken publicly to support an important UN ocean protection
agreement.Skillfully employing her acting experience in environmental documentaries and on
social media, she has helped spread environmental awareness effectively.Besides, she has
participated in grassroots environmental activities in her busy acting career to protect local natural
resources.
For over a decade,Woodley has been determined to make real and practical changes rather
than just take photos for show.As a Greenpeace ocean ambassador, she worked hard day and
night to help pass the High Seas Treaty(条约),which aims to protect international marine areas
第3页(共8页)
and improve marine biodiversity. While filming in South Africa, she helped push for expanding
protected marine areas from 5 to 10 percent.
Documentaries have also helped her spread the message. In 2024,she appeared in PBS's
Hope in the Water about overfishing and alternative seafood options, which led to increased sales
of sustainable seafood products.
Whether on the ground or on camera,Woodley avoids anger.Instead, she appeals to people
on a more fundamental level."If somebody is not familiar with who I am or my work, then I sit
there, explaining it to them from a very human-based place,"she says."We're in this room
together. So how do we create a solution?"

Q
When fly larvae (attack cowpea plants, the plants release chemicals from their roots
into the soil. These chemicals sustain a helpful community of microbes ()In turn, those
microbes stimulate the plants to release a smell that attracts parasitoid wasps ()-natural
enemies of the flies, researchers from Zhejiang University,China reported in Cell Reports
recently.
The American serpentine leafminer,a fly native to the southeastern United States, now
threatens crops in Asia,Europe and Canada. Its larvae tunnel through leaves, destroying plants
like cowpeas, eggplants and beans.Without control measures, they can ruin entire fields. One
effective method is to bring in parasitoid wasps, which can consume the young flies.
Some plants release chemical signals to call for help when being eaten.Such above-ground
defenses are thought to be short-lived,dissipating once the insect stops feeding. But previous studies
suggest that plants can shape which microbes live around their roots. The researchers wondered
if soil microbes could help plants achieve longer-lasting protection.
In the experiment, they grew cowpea plants and allowed fly larvae to feed on them. Then they
removed the original plants and used the same soil to grow new cowpeas. The results were
striking:the new plants attracted far more wasps than those growing in healthy soil with no insect
attack history.Further analysis showed that the larvae had caused the plants to release root
chemicals that fed certain bacteria. These bacteria then directed new cowpeas to release a smell
that draws in wasps, even when no pests were present. This result points towards a durable
protection, showing that root microbes keep the memory of an attack, ensuring that defensive
mechanisms don't have to be rebuilt every time.
Michelle Afkhami,an American ecologist not involved in the study, noted that soil microbes
can maintain what would normally be short-lived protection for the next generation. It remains
unclear how long this microbial protection lasts or whether other plants use similar strategies. But
uncovering how the protection works could help researchers use wasps as a biological control tool.

28.What is cowpea plants'initial reaction when fly larvae attack them?
A.They release a smell to attract wasps.
B.They produce chemicals from their roots.
C.They send out signals through their leaves.
D.They support the community of soil microbes.
29.What does the underlined word "dissipating"in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Generating.
B.Strengthening.C.Disappearing.
D.Spreading.
30.What can be concluded from the experiment result?
A.Healthy soil contains more microbes.
B.Fly larvae feed on bacteria in the soil.
C.Soil defense still works after pest attacks.D.New cowpeas can hardly resist pests.
31.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To warn farmers against leafminer damage.
B.To compare different pest control methods
C.To introduce a fly that harms crops worldwide.
D.To explain how plants use soil microbes for help.

A new study from Tel Aviv University (TAU)has found that the smartphones we all carry in
our pockets could help collect weather data from the public to provide early warnings for wildfires
and other extreme weather conditions.
Professor Colin Price from TAU used data collected from the global public via the
WeatherSignal app to develop a methodology for assessing wildfire risk. All smartphones are
equipped with multiple micro-sensors capable of collecting important environmental data, such as
temperature, humidity ()light,location,and more. These data can warn us when the
battery overheats or the device absorbs moisture(水分)一all in real time..
Today, millions or even billions of data points are collected worldwide every day by our
smartphones.Early waming systems in remote forested areas typically lack data due to the absence
of weather stations in remote locations. The public, however, take their smartphones everywhere,
with each phone containing micro-sensors that operate continuously in the background.
One key factor determining the likelihood of a wildfire is the moisture content in vegetation
()which,in turn,is determined by the temperature and relative humidity of the
surrounding air. Both of them can be easily obtained from the public's smartphones. But
smartphone data do contain errors. The temperature might be influenced by the air-conditioners,
while the humidity sensor might identify moisture when the user is taking a shower.Fortunately,
researchers say the huge amount of data collected from smartphones allow us to remove abnormal
data, and this procedure turned out to be relatively straightforward.
The researchers analyzed two major wildfire events:fires in Israel in November 2016 and the
massive fire in Portugal in July 2013.The results were surprising, with smartphone data showing
significant abnormal signs before and during these major fires.
"Given the rapid increase in the number of smartphones worldwide,we propose making
efficient use of this data source to provide better early wamings to the public and disaster
managers about natural disasters,"Professor Price concludes.
32.What can the smartphone data be used for according to the study?
A.Finding a solution to climate change.
B.Identifying where the fire has occurred.
C.Supporting early warnings for water crisis.
D.Forecasting wildfire and weather disasters.
第5页(共8页)
33.What can be inferred about the smartphone data from paragraph 3?
A.It is difficult to be used globally.
B.It can be applied to a broader range.
C.It is unavailable in remote areas.
D.It is more accurate than weather report
34.Why are there errors in the collected data?
A.It is easily affected by the surroundings.B.The electronic data itself is unstable.
C.The technical procedure is too complicated.D.It is influenced by the people around.
35.Why does the author mention "the massive fire in Portugal"?
A.To show the frequency of abnormal signs.B.To introduce a severe wildfire.
C.To prove the usefulness of smartphone data.D.To explain the cause of the fire.

The high-speed trap is a good example of how serious sport can make physical activity less
enjoyable.Pressure to get good results, racing the clock, and always trying to improve make
running harder for many people, both physically and mentally.36 Just be slower, easier,
focused on enjoyment and a healthy lifestyle-like slow jogging.
37 Its creator,professor Hiroaki Tanaka,was also a long-distance runner.His own
health problems inspired him to create a training method based on low-intensity sessions and
focusing on running technique. The style became popular in Japan and the USA during the 1990s
and 2000s.
The core of slow jogging is smile.38 Instead of pushing for speed and intensity,we go
for movement that boosts our mood. With slow jogging, you can enjoy a smile and a conversation
while you run.
Slow jogging is built around three main elements, making it different from other kinds of
running.39 Slow jogging is a low-intensity activity. The pace is very relaxed, with the heart
rate staying below 70%of its maximum. While slow jogging can be done at any low speed, rhythm
is what matters most. The best value is 180 steps per minute, which is typical for long-distance
running. In slow jogging, instead of rolling from heel to toe,we land and push off from the middle of
the foot.40
When running, keep your posture upright-shoulders relaxed, arms bent and moving
naturally. And of course, don't forget to smile-that's exactly what it's all about!
A.Slow jogging started in Japan.
B.This is a natural running technique.
C.Training should feel good,not painful.
D.You have to deserve to run hard and fast.
E.Its variations have made it even more popular.
F.They are running pace, rhythm and landing technique.
G.That is why trying a new way of running is a good idea.

My son Mike was once a curious boy who loved exploring the real world. Now,he often
spends hours lying on the sofa, his eyes glued to his phone screen.I miss the little explorer who
asked endless questions about nature.
One Sunday, seeing him scroll mindlessly again,I sat beside him."Remember watching
ants for hours in the garden?"I said."You learn things by touching the world with your own
hands."He looked up,impatient."But my phone shows me everything,Dad.It's easier,"he
replied.I knew I had to find a way to show him another truth.
A perfect chance came unexpectedly the next weekend. Our washing machine broke down
with a loud noise..When I got a surprisingly high repair quote(报价),an idea hit me.“What if
we fix it by ourselves?"I suggested to Mike.He looked doubtful."Ourselves? We know nothing
about machines!"But I brought out my old toolbox and explained,"We can watch online
tutorials(教程)and use these tools to have a try.”“It could be an adventure.”After a long
pause,he finally gave a slow, hesitant nod of agreement.
We moved the heavy machine and saw a confusing network of pipes and wires behind it.And
Mike found a popular repair video on his phone. However, our older machine looked completely
different from the one in the tutorial."None of these parts match!"he said, sounding defeated.I
smiled and encouraged him patiently."Videos give us ideas,"I said,"but every machine is
unique.Let's leamn about ours together."He put his phone down, his expression tuming
