Elephants are known for their large size and good memory, but do they have feelings like humans? Scientists wanted to find out the answer. ★ They studied a group of elephants in Africa for many years.
The scientists found something surprising: elephants show sadness when a family member dies. When an elephant passes away, other elephants in the group come to the body. They touch the dead elephant gently with their trunks. They stand still and keep quiet for a long time. Sometimes they even try to lift the body with their trunks. Scientists believe this is a way of saying goodbye.
The scientists did another experiment. They played recordings of elephant sounds. Some sounds came from elephants the group knew. Other sounds came from elephants they did not know. What happened? When the elephants heard the voice of an elephant they knew, they became active and called back. But when they heard the voice of an elephant they did not know, they stood still and put their ears forward. They seemed to get ready to fight.
The results show that elephants can tell the difference between friends and strangers. They also have strong social bonds (社交联系). They care about each other just like humans do.
However, elephants are in great danger today. People kill them for their ivory. Their living areas are becoming smaller and smaller. If we do not protect them, these smart and caring animals may disappear forever.
26.Which of the following can be put in ★ in Paragraph 1?
A.So they decided to do some experiments on these large animals.
B.But they found that elephants are not as smart as people thought.
C.So they taught the elephants to play different kinds of games.
D.But they did not have enough time to finish their research.
27.Which picture shows what elephants do after a family member dies?
A. B. C. D.
28.What does the underlined word “still” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Not moving. B.Very happy. C.Making sounds. D.Running fast.
29.What did the elephants do when they heard the voice of an elephant they did not know?
A.They became active and called back. B.They stood still and put their ears forward.
C.They ran away from the sound quickly. D.They touched each other with their trunks.
30.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Elephants’ Good Memory B.Smart and Caring Elephants
C.How to Save Elephants D.Elephants and Humans

A. B. C. D.

A.Not moving. B.Very happy. C.Making sounds. D.Running fast.
29.What did the elephants do when they heard the voice of an elephant they did not know?
A.They became active and called back. B.They stood still and put their ears forward.
C.They ran away from the sound quickly. D.They touched each other with their trunks.
30.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Elephants’ Good Memory B.Smart and Caring Elephants
C.How to Save Elephants D.Elephants and Humans
